Just bought an Ames lettering guide, only to realise how oblivious i am about lettering my comics. Trying to make a professional looking Issue 1 after 3 failed attempts at making home made comics. Anyone got any tips or links to help me? I have been using Pigment Liners in the past but am thinking about adapting to brushes, since i am using a combination of the both to ink my pencils. People have told me my other comics have been illegible or the text is too small or inconsistent.

Any help??

Maybe I'm just overconsidering things and just need to man up and get it done

I use Rapidographs to letter my comics. I've never used an Ames guide though, I just rule it out with a ruler, and go from there. One tip - if you're going to do it by hand, you need to buy/borrow/steal some oval templates so that your word balloons aren't all lopsided and wonky. And make sure you get the ones with little bumps that raise it up off the paper (it keeps you from smearing the ink with the template).

I hate to advise this, but if you haven't really practiced hand-lettering and aren't proficient at it (I'm not saying that's the case), go ahead and do it on the computer. Unreadable dialogue is going to be near-impossible for a reader to overcome.

Any suggestions on what pens to use to letter. Wanna give that authentic broad line comic lettering effect but my brush pen is too spiradic

Any of the many different kinds of lettering nibs out there are the way to go. Which one you go for specifically depends on what you want in your lettering, so I would suggest buying several and seeing what works for you.

personally I use a Micron 01 but I gotta say this
if you do hand lettering, you really have to be careful and take your time. Speed through your lettering and it'll look like it was lettered by a four year old. I've spent a good deal of time just practicing lettering in pencil to get it to look right first and if I get careless flaws really starts to show up.

and I'm still not up to snuff!
