This thread is about the small things that used to happen that you wish would happen again.

Also, it is OK to take this idea a step further to bitch and whine, but expect to be made fun of for doing so.

The No. 1 small thing I miss:

Getting ketchup with my fries in a drive-thru without having to ask and specify the number of packets.

You need to go to a Fast food place in a richer area then. The poorer the area the tighter they are on condiments. Otherwise people will use McDonalds as a Grocery store. In affluent Suburbs they have Ketchup out for you to take!

Well, I don't live in the Delta. The city I live in isn't poor or average by Mississippi standards.

In affluent Suburbs they have Ketchup out for you to take!

Haha, there is maybe a handful of cities in Mississippi that could be called suburbs.

I don't ever remember drivers being that good about that. It seems like they use them about 2/3 of the time around here which is better than the "almost never" in Georgia, but it's still not that impressive.

that's not always true. and I used to live in a very bad part of Brooklyn and there was an asian-muslim run chinese food place that had boxes, BOXES of soy, mustard and duck sauces out for the people to take. And I think McD's are franchises, so the individual owners decide.

As for the lollipops, I think they still do that, but it's an age thing.

I think in the States it was akin to the BigNTasty.

Quarter meat on a quarter bun, ketchup on the bottom, McChicken sauce, lettuce and tomato and big onions on the top. It had it's own spices for a while too. I got extra spices and the meat well done.

For some reason quarter meat just tasted better in a Big Xtra than in a Quarter Pounder.

getting a lollipop when you go to the Doctor.
Yes. Well, tbh, as a kid, my doctor was very anti-candy. He gave boxes of raisins. Also, lollipops at the bank.

Hmm... speaking of the bank: when I was younger, not only were there no fees at the bank, but... at the bank where my first account was held, they even gave free lunch to people in the bank. Every day, from 11:30am to 1pm, they had a buffet of hotdogs, hamburgers, and coffee/iced tea. I really miss that.

Or better yet, uncontrolled intersections.
I tend to think it's far too easy for people to get driver's licenses these days, because a good 50% don't deserve to have the ability to drive because of their incompetence and discourtesy.

The other day, we had a blackout from the heat, and people didn't know what to do when the traffic signals didn't work (or didn't care). Some people were flat-out ignoring them, flying through at 35mph, and the other half just stopped and stayed there.

Today, no less than 5 people I encountered in cars were blocking traffic for no apparent reason. They were just sitting there in the middle of the street with their engine running, looking stupid. Egads, it pissed me off.
I miss new Calvin and Hobbes.
Yes. And Bloom County. I really miss Bill the Cat.

Around here, the Big Xtra had a Thousand Island-like condiment (ketchup-mayo combination) instead of separate ketchup and mayo. Yeah, that seasoning was yummy.

I think we're about the same age, but it could be regional or have to do with the size of the city.

It seems like drivers in Florida are better about it than those in Georgia or North Carolina, but I do most of my driving in Florida in a mid-size city and most of it in Georgia around Atlanta or in small towns. Same with North Carolina except it's all small towns there.

I seem to recall that the monthly price of Sega Channel was cheaper than renting games at Blockbuster (before the days of Netflix and Gamefly) which factored into the decision. As a Sega kid growing up, Sega Channel was pretty much the coolest thing available to people who couldn't get a Saturn.

That would be the precursor to Up All Night, right? That was a nice little show to watch when I tried to pull all-nighters as a wee little Thad.

That reminds me, Donald. I miss the availability of certain Saturn titles. I bought a functioning Saturn in December, 2007 for a reasonable price...but the five games I bought set me back like $200! There is also a game called Guardian Heroes that runs anywhere from $70-$200.

Worth it if you're a fan with cash to spare I guess, but not long after buying my Saturn I played all the games for it that interested me and realized that very few games that looked good to me were on the way.

I bought into the early hype that with Sony apparently disinterested in RPGs, Saturn would be that genereation's RPG machine.

Then the FF VII news hit . . .

I ended up trading in my Saturn and games for enough credit to buy a Playstation and a couple of games.

My uncle actually worked for CD-i in the early 1990's and I got to play all of the games for free. I think Nintendo managed to adapt because the games the company marketed to that system sucked BALLS, Mario and Zelda alike. CD-i was a system that virtually no one purchased and I like to think Nintendo used it as an experiment; one in which they learned from their mistakes.

I suppose I should list something else I miss. Hmm. Buying strategy guides for video games. Nowadays, the internet is there to offer walkthroughs.

Ooh ooh ooh.

Sidescrolling Sonic.

Sod Sonic.

Where's the perserverance in trying to get a game like Sonic to work. You just plug it in and away you go.

I was think more about games like Manic Miner.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/5a/Manic_Miner_Screenshot.png

This game loaded from a tape and took five minutes, and if you were lucky it'd work first time. If not you'd rewind, fiddle with the volume, adjust the plug in the mic socket, cross your fingers, not look at the TV, pray and try not to breathe in another attempt to get the damn thing to load.

All that time and effort just for a fairly simple, if highly challenging game. Once it did load, you played the damn thing to death, because you didn't want to go through the whole rigmorole of trying to load something else.

It would've been so much simpler if you'd have actually bought an original copy, but in the desire to save a fiver you copied the game from a mate on your Dad's tape to tape deck in the front room.

Now that was when gaming was gaming.

The Big Xtra was the only burger I ever really liked from McDonald's.

Same here!

And yes, I miss it....that and McD's fries fried in tallow or whatever it was they were using before the "healthier" oil....which tastes like crap.

Oh and when you could order fries and they would come with a light dusting of salt, these days when I order fries I have to specify NO salt or else I will get more salt crystals than potato.

Non-food things:

- Clean streets: Toronto's city garbage collectors are on strike now and the streets look AWFUL. It's almost to the point where I kind of don't want to wear my sandals around town because of all the broken glass everywhere which brings me to another point:
-Litterbugs: Seriously, is it really that tough to carry your garbage HOME with you? Honestly, people in this city are so lazy!
- Cellphones: I miss the days when people didn't have to be constantly blabbing away on one of these. Really is the story of your pedicure really THAT important that it can't wait until you see the person face-face?
-Movie theatres: I miss the days when I could get into a movie for $2...and it was a movie worth paying to see in theatres. And the audience behaved.

I feel old now.

The "salsa carts" that would sell high-end salsa dip in the local mall throughout the late 1990s. Don't ask me why it was high-end; I think the labels just make it looks fancier than it was.

I miss some of the innocence of yesteryear....

Being able to have a newspaper delivery BOY on a bike, not some old dude who runs around the neighborhood in his car, have local landscapers who are teens or locals trying to make some cash for college or whatnot, not having Halloween be the MOST protective thing in the neighborhood now, and basically kids can't just run around. Just the neighborhood has changed, kids don't ride around on their bikes or big wheels. When it's nice out, you can hardly tell anymore, with no one enjoying it. Kids don't run to the local stores anymore for comics, candy or baseball cards...

Oh anything of value IS long gone....whats left is all the fast food garbage that is neither recyclable nor valuable. All over the place. Usually with rotten "leftovers" inside (yuck).

Another thing I miss: In-depth reporting shows where they spend most of the time talking about the TOPIC and not the reporters. Example: I'm watching an episode of The Nature of Things (a science/environment/nature hour-long show on CBC) the other night that is supposed to be about Green energy use in Europe. So how do they spend most of the episode:

- David Suzuki gets sick so his daughter takes us sightseeing for the day. No, she doesn't interview anyone about green anything on her own
- David Suzuki and daughter love riding the trains in Europe. Half the episode is them sleeping and/or playing on their computers on the train. No discussion as to WHY they are taking the train so much, which would have been a very timely piece of information for Canadians.
-The film crew takes a break to shoot some tourist pictures. You know, so we can tell we are in Europe. There is no discussion about the environmental impact of tourism.

When they finally get around to talking business it's "look the Reichstag is almost completely self suffient, isn't that cool!"

Used to be a time that just explaining the "coolness" of the green Reichstag would be an episode to itself because they would go into THAT much detal.

Drivers using their turn signal indicators.

I never knew even knew this used to happen. I learned young that:
a) a person not signalling may be about to turn
and
b) a person signalling may not be about to turn

My favorite signalling story:
The light was backed up past the previous intersection, so I stopped before the intersection as you're supposed to to wait. This was unnecessary as it was clear nobody would come down that random side street before the light turned green, but why not?

Well, the person behind me wanted to make a right turn, and I was in his way. Had I known this, I'd have just pulled up into the intersection.

He decided to signal to me he wanted to turn by honking at me. After a bit of confusion, I interpreted his honks to mean, "I want to turn right". Too bad cars don't have any other way of indicating this as the honking got annoying.

I miss when it was socially acceptable for me to shit myself. If you wait long enough, that'll come back around again.

If you wait long enough, that'll come back around again.

It's still not exactly socially acceptable, more just a fact of life.

Most of the stuff I was going to say has been said.

I miss not having any real responsabilities, mostly.

I miss Looney Toons and the Three Stooges on weekend mornings.

I had to go out and buy the Looney Tunes Golden collections because my kids were growing up without basic knowledge of Warner Brothers cartoons. They just aren't on tv anymore.

A few things I miss:

Comics sold on a spinner rack at the local 7-11
Gum in baseball card packs
Watching Tom Hatton host Popeye cartoons on Sunday mornings on KTLA

I've seen prizes in my kid's cereal.

My "seen" "I mean fished out early and kept for myself", of course.

You can miss Ed's Small thing, but not the whole Ed.

so you miss the times when you had a miniature penis, a barely functioning brain, hardly any hair and the physical ability of a 2 month old puppy?
