Looking trough the "Lamest, worst Marvel covers of all time? (http://forums.comicbookresources.com/showthread.php?t=276833)" thread got me thinking....

To start things off, here's one of my favorites:

Kind of an under the radar cover:

After the end of the Justice League of America and Legends the Justice League was reborn and enjoyed a level of popularity it hadn't seen in a long, long time.

This particular cover is significant to me for a couple of reasons, it's the first Justice League book I ever owned and it simply screamed power.

This line up was just remarkable, unfortunately this particular era of the League will forever be known as the 'Bwah hah hah' time and, while the comedic direction was important as it set the tone for the new series, it often overshadowed the fact that there were some great stories being told.

And of course, this particular cover was copied a dozen times or more in future issues.

DC did a fan poll in their comics a while back, and the results were as follows:

5. Flash #123 (where Barry and Jay are running side by side and the first appearance of the Multiverse)
4. Batman: The Killing Joke
3. Action Comics #1
2. Batman: The Dark Knight Returns #1
1. Crisis on Infinite Earths #7

I'm not sure if I got the order right, but those were the top five as voted by fans. Crisis, though, was definitely #1.

Many covers from 52 were well done and finely detailed. Alex Ross still reigns supreme as a cover artist imo. I can't track the specific ones down right now, but will post later.

Tim Sale's Dark Victory 1 cause thats the best looking Batman there has been. Miller's TDKR cause of the cool pose. Year One cause of the emotions you can see from young Bruce in that rather simple cover.

Very nice cover by Neal Adams. I don't know what this penciled effect is called technically, but it was used on a couple of these covers to nice effect.

Warlord and Aquaman at odds with each other is a great angle that builds on the fact that Atlantis and Skartaris must border each other. It hadn't occurred to me until this cover and it's since become ingrained in my visual of each character.

The idea of Batman breaking away from the globe trotting JLA and forming his own group was stunning 26 years ago.

Still a darned good idea.

And the bad blood between bats & the JLA affected the world's finest comics at that time for a while as the writer has to figure out a way to connect superman & batman together and still showcase them seperately until they finally mend the fence in world's finest 300 when the JLA & outsiders had to team up.

I loved Hal Jordan as Parallax and even more as the Spectre. I'm glad he's back as GL again, but I like that the character actually changed and did what he felt was right at the time, and later attempted to redeem himself.

Thanks for those, marshall, especially the first 100 page ish. I forked out over $50 on Ebay just to get that cover. Neal Adams is the best cover artist in history.

@ marshall99 : LOL ! Hadn't thought about that. Just get on a tear here and there when I have some free time and post. I'm a longtime collector and love comic art. I keep adding covers to a screen saver program.

There's was a similar thread over on the Marvel Universe forums that I posted on too. DC's my favorite though.

Yeah, it's all reprint stuff from memory.

You know the worst part, though? I ended up having to get another copy (it may even have been 2 copies) because I wasn't happy with the condition the first one was in. :eek:

I figured if I was going to fork out that much, it was going to be damn well worth it. :wink:
