How could I forget this one? One of my absolute favorite comic images/covers. This Kaluta masterpiece is unforgettable and as memorable as the character herself. This definitely goes in my TOP TEN.

There are lots of great Kirby covers showing Mr Miracle about to bust out of some trap, but to me the traps are more about slipping Darkseid, that's why this cover is just.

Believe me, Hondo... I have a pitch and mini all set to go for Vertigo for Night Force!
While the premiere cover is great, I've been a fan of this one:

@ DubipR : Yes, I love that cover too. The 7 headed beast was tempting also.

@ numberONE : Everyone has an opinion. I don't care much for the Schaffenberger covers but have always liked that Miller cover and the contrast between doey-eyed billboard perfect bigger than life Superboy and the real Superboy hanging his teenage head in silhouette walking out of the panel. All comments are welcome. What don't you like about that cover ?

@ marshall99 : It's too addictive when I get on a roll to stop posting great covers ! I didn't remember some of those Demon covers. That ought to be a mini : Lobo and the Demon.

@ Global Honored : It's just too much fun posting these ! I hope someone is enjoying these half as much as I am.

There's been a lot of great DC comics so far, but I like this one best of the bunch. (Oddly enough, I was just thinking the same thing about the Our Fighting Forces one above it until I saw the PS one.) This is one of those rare occasions (I find, at least) where a word balloons actually adds to the overall effect of the cover, in this case, greatly increasing the weirdness. Just a great cover all around.

@ numberONE : Sorry if I re-posted an image. I'm trying not to do that. I remembered that cat cover. Sometimes, like with that cover, I definitely would've posted it if it hadn't been posted all ready.

The Power Girl image really conveys her sexiness but more than a cheesecake pose, gives a feeling of power and confidence. She's obviously attractive but is striking because of her relaxed floating position. It looks like what anyone would do in a relaxed state if they could defy gravity.

Simone Bianchi floored me with this cover immediately. I didn't recognize the signature and quickly scoured the interior credits for a name I had never heard of before. Soon after that I met him at San Diego Comic-Con and had him sketch me Thor. It's one of my most prized pieces of art. I wish he did more comics work. He's a gentleman I'll never forget having met.

I'm sorry but all I see are a lot of ugly/ mediocre covers, probably of some of your favourite series/ characters or something that triggers some nostalgia. Greatest covers of all time shouldn't be the title here.

you think the "greatest of" title has been a bit watered down now huh?

but maybe you are forgetting about this!!!!.........

Jose Luis Garcia Lopez has created some of the most dynamic covers. As silly as the concept may have originally been, the art was phenomenal.

Taste is subjective , i think the thread has become favorite rather than greatest.

The term greatest is subjective of course. Yes, some of these choices are influenced by past memories as others have too.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Some covers that really struck me as a youngster I passed up because they weren't worthy despite my feelings, the last title being a childhood favorite, the Secret Society of Super-Villains.

What covers did you think were ugly or mediocre and why ? If you're bold enough to state how bad they are I'm sure you'll be just as ready to elaborate on why you feel that way.

What would be the qualifications, according to you, for what would be the greatest ? Most historically significant ? The same covers we've seen hundreds of times, like Action Comics # 1, or covers that capture the truest verve of the character, like I've expressed here ?

@ THEDOC : I wasn't really trying to separate the covers by sections. I'm going through my images alphabetically and showing the first cover in a title that really grabs me, if there are any that I think are particularly memorable or, if that the average poster on this thread would enjoy.

Some comic shops divide their offerings by publisher, but a few do not. They alphabetize and mix publishers thus exposing more titles to the guy searching for a particular title i.e. it's more work for the hunter and by doing so he's got to go through more exposure to get what he wants.

I'm not trying to be cute or a pain, but just trying to expose some great covers that some reading this forum wouldn't otherwise see.

@ mgs : Yes, this existed long before Vertigo. I'm glad they did bring the character back. Unknown Soldier is a great concept. I'd like to see it as a movie.
thanks hondo!

I really like this Vertigo incarnation. Do you know what this previous series was like?

I hadn't read any for years but they were quite entertaining WWII fare. Don't know if DC has collected Unknown Soldier for their Showcase black and white reprints but I think it'd be a good call.

what's wrong with it?
It's exploitative, uninspired to the point of laziness, ugly and anatomically incorrect.

Pretty much Sgt. Rock meets Human Target. He also had a DC Comics presents appearance that teamed him with Superman, and a maxi series by Christopher Priest/Jim Owsley.

I love the Adam Hugh cover for PowerGirl where she is flying as if she were laying down. Beautiful artwork

It would be very hard for everyone on this thread to agree on what represents a cover worthy of being posted here.

I picked Birds of Prey # 2 and some might say that focused too much on Oracle and not enough of the team as a whole.

Less than perfect comics hold a special place in my heart as monuments to dreaming. Someone read and re-read and basked in the glow of that fine four color gateway. My first comics were falling apart ragged with Superman, the Human Torch, x-ray specs, venus fly traps, Hostess Twinkie ads, Stan's Soapbox and the good old letters page.

but it's not supposed to be realistic. It's done in a certain style that is kinda exaggerated. But it's certainly not exploitative in any way, imo!

well, my copy's holding up, but it's not a pretty cover to look at.

compared to the other issues of Adventure in my collection from the same time, Its in definite need of an upgrade at some point.

Apologies if these have already been posted, as I've not checked the whole thread.

If the mark of a good comic cover is that you just have to read the stories inside, then for me these are stonewall classics.

Sex-change superheroes always make for a good story.

I completely agree that if the function of the cover is to compel you to read the story and buy the comic, these covers do it. In fact I have everyone except that Golden Age Batman.

Yeah I can accept stuff that's not realistic, but the ugliness of the cover is the biggest problem.

If anyone's interested, I just finished a countdown of the top 150 DC covers on my blog. I'm not really a DC expert so I'm sure I missed something important (though I did read helpful threads like this one here during my research), and I've already pretty much decided to make one or two changes, but it was fun looking at all those great comics.

Here's the master list of my 150 covers (http://comicsvault.blogspot.com/2010/08/top-150-dc-covers-master-list.html), which also contains links to the individual covers along with explanations for why I chose each and why I ranked them as I did. Feel free to check it out and tell me how back-asswards my picks were.
