View Full Version : Is 'Hex' worth it?

I loves me some Jonah Hex, and read just about every Showcase or trade I could get my hands on so far, and I was curious to know if the 'Hex' limited series, wherein Jonah is transported to the future and whatnot, is worth it? Specifically because there doesn't appear to be a trade of it available, and the only place I've been able to find it requires that I buy the entire series at once. Again, I do like the character, but the series, by it's very nature, promises to be rather different than what the average fan of the character is used to; and I'm not entirely at peace shelling out the kind of money they are asking for to get an entire 18 or so comics, if I'm not going to get through half of one.

It's good fun once you get over it being an obvious Mad Max rip off.

Apart from the costume & the basic post-apocalyptic concept, there's no resemblances to Mad Max at all.
Of course it's a Mad Max concept, that's how Michael Fleischer was told to take the direction of the comic as the western comic was dead back then.

OK, sounds like I'll give it a shot. Thanks, all!

It was more than a limited series, FYI, it was a ongoing that lasted about 18 or 20 issues.

Just for balance.... I really hated it. Tried it for three issues and dropped it like a disgusting thing. I guess I was pissed off they'd canceled the western series, but I've never been able to read "Hex"-- darn near everything Jonah's in, I read. Go figure.
hope your experience's better!

It was actually Fleisher's idea to take the series in that direction, since sales on the western were slipping fast.
Hex ran 18 issues with art by a young (but talented even then) Mark Texeira, Ron Wagner and, for the final few issues, Keith Giffen. It was good fun from start to finish, especially those early issues with Tex's art.
The western was dead anyway, so Fleisher figured he'd try something totally new with the character. But, in the end, it all comes full circle with an earlier Jonah Hex tale, which makes it a very satisfying.
I thoroughly enjoyed the western series and have fond memories of reading the post-apocalyptic series and when I reread it, it was still just as fun as I remember it.

Are these showcase books with western Hex stories still in print ? I never find any in LCS.
I would love to read anything old with Hex since i have only read the new awesome series.

There are two Showcase: Jonah Hex volumes out, but I have only been able to find "Volume 1" at either the library or online (via Amazon, specifically). However, what with the movie coming out next year, it's always possible a surge in interest will see a relaunching.

I didn't know there was a second volume of Showcase Presents Jonah Hex and I've been looking it up online but haven't been able to find one for sale. I think this one has NOT been released, but was planned for release last year.

Yes; I agree: I believe there's just the one Showcase volume available, with a second having been solicited, then withdrawn--something about payments/finances regarding the reprints, if I recall correctly--maybe not!--. Anyway, I've been watching for announcements about volume two and haven't seen anyway. Would be very happy to find v.2 available, though!
