One of my favorites, vol. 2 #25.

A lot of these stories deal with the sort of smaller, individual stories that deal with individual characters, this issue though shows just what happened to the entire Marvel U if Set was allowed to win Atlantis Attacks.

It was one of the first comic books I'd ever read as a kid that actually depressed me as the heroes were just absolutely, convincingly put down.

My favorite did not survive my childhood, but was one of the first issues I happened to grab as a kid:

My favorite 5 stories from What if volume 2 , not in any particular order.

What if issue 4...the alien costume had posessed spider-man
Great art by Mark Bagley , his first full spider-man story i believe , he has previously only done backups. Shortly after this story, he became the artist for new warriors. Enjoyable story.
http://image2.milehighcomics.com/istore/images/large/95078701518.4.gif

What if issue 6....x-men lost inferno
Great art by Ron Lim , evil baby eating wolverine is scary.
http://image2.milehighcomics.com/istore/images/large/95078701518.6.gif

What if issue 24...Wolverine was Lord of the vampires
Tom Morgan's art is mediocre but vampire wolverine was cool.
http://image2.milehighcomics.com/istore/images/large/95078701518.24.gif

What if issue 25...Marvel superheroes had lost atlantis attacks (pic as shown above)

What if issue 78....the new fantastic four had remained a team
Nice cover art by Simon Bisley , decent interior art by Ariel Olivetti. Always enjoyed the unusual pairing of these 4.
http://image2.milehighcomics.com/istore/images/large/95078701518.78.gif

Notable mentions -
What if issue 16 - Wolverine battled Conan.
What if issue 22 - Silver Surfer had not escaped Earth. Great art by Ron Lim.
What if issue 50 - the hulk had killed Wolverine
What if issue 80 - the hulk had evolved into maestro.
What if issue 108 - starring the avengers ,spider-man, silver surfer & carnage. Not great art but cosmic carnage is fun.

I always mention one of my favorite all-time issues. Volume #1, No. 3, "What If the Avengers had never been?" It's one of the first comics written (I believe) by a young Jim Shooter, it's drawn by Gil Kane, and I believe inked by Klaus Janson. It's set right after the Hulk leaves the Avengers after issue #2. In our reality, the team continues, battles the Hulk and Sub-mariner, discovers Captain America, etc. Here, the rest of the team says, well, maybe the Hulk has a point, and disbands, much to Iron Man's dismay. So he's on his own when the Sub-mariner and the Hulk team up.....

Another pretty good one (also volume 1) was No. 12 (What if Nova had been four different people?). Those are about the only ones I still go back and read today.

What if Iron man had remained in camelot- it was short but great story- notably done by the team that did the IM issues in question!

I'd forgotten that Iron Man was knighted back in camelot and has used Excalibur twice now.
It's also where Doom meets Morgana LeFey.

IIRC
In this world the Red Skull has been impersonating Steve Rogers since the end of the war. he's been made basically President for Life and made the US pretty similar to Nazi Germany.
Punisher is a SHIELD (in essence the Gestapo) agent who gets the armor. I can't remember WHY he turns good in the story though.
Giant-Man is Bill Foster, Black Goliath in the 616
Wendigo is Wolverine.
Namor had amnesia and was living as a homeless man (in the 616 Human Torch found him and recognized him and jogged his memory). hence the beard.

http://media.comicvine.com/uploads/0/4/30659-4249-34113-1-what-if-_super.jpg

I love this one. Lots of cool changes. It's dystopic but not overly so. It's just that New York is controlled by Vampire X-men. The Punisher wearing Dr. Strange's cape is just badassery.

Me, too. I used to have nightmares about this happening. I hated the part where the Hulk had to kill Spider-Man and then he got killed by Susan Storm because of asphyxiation (suffocation?). Though, through age, I've come to like this comic for the not-everything-ends-happily-tone.

What If? 19 (V1) What If Spider-Man had never become a crimefighter? is mandatory reading material for anyone who reads Spider-Man issues. This explores his using his mantra of great power and great responsibility perfectly.

What if Wolverine Became an Agent of SHIELD?

http://cache.coverbrowser.com/image/what-if/7-1.jpg

Wolverine joins SHIELD instead of the X-Men. Some of the only decent art Leifeld ever did(he finished over Jim Valentino's layouts), and a decent story, with a rare upbeat ending:
The bad news, Nick Fury was killed by a Strucker LMD. The good news, Logan was named Director of SHIELD, and used his newfound political clout to prevent Steven Lang's Sentinel project, averting the events that would turn Jean Grey into the Phoenix, and later derailed Senator Kelly's Mutant Registration Act, thus avoiding the whole Days of Future Past scenario.

What If...The Fantastic Four Battled Doctor Doom Before They Got Their Powers?

http://cache.coverbrowser.com/image/what-if/18-1.jpg

Just as advertized. In this one, Doom wasn't expelled after the accident that scarred his face, and continued his experiments to break the seals of Hell.
Reed ended up succeeding where Doom had failed, and Doom's ego took a hit because he owed his mother's life to a man he hated. As a result he built his armor and turned would-be world beater anyway. And the events that led to the FF still would take place after this battle, because the FF would be needed to confront this new Doom.

What If...Peter Parker Had to Destroy Spider-Man?

http://cache.coverbrowser.com/image/what-if/76-1.jpg

Great art by Stuart Immoman. Flash Thompson gets bitten by the ol' radioactive spider and uses his powers to become a costumed criminal.
He cons Peter Parker into inventing his web-shooters(since Peter was at home that night, the burgler ended up casing the Watsons' place, and killed MJ instead of Ben Parker), and then tries to kill Peter. Peter survives and then strikes up an alliance with Otto Octavius by helping prevent the catastrophe that would turn him into Doctor Octopus. Octavius builds a spider-leg rig similar to his tentacles, which Peter dons to fight Flash. As a result, without powers, he becomes a respected hero.

Back when my mod/mentor Sean Kleefeld used to operate the FFplaza.com website (gosh, I wish he'd put that back online again), he had an interview with Dwayne MacDuffie about that story. If this is the one I am thinking of, he wrote it around the same time as Roger Stern had put together the "Doctor Strange/Doctor Doom: Triumph and Torment" I think once Roger Stern's story got the green light, this one was shelved and was later reworked as a What IF story. Maybe Stern or MacDuffie is lurking about and can clarify it.

EDITED TO ADD LINK;

I just found the info on McDuffie's site (http://homepage.mac.com/dmcduffie/site/Scripts.html)

Ones that Got Away

Young Fantastic Four (graphic novel). The Fantastic Four has always been my dream book. When I sold this graphic novel, I thought the news was too good to be true. It was. My story was rendered moot by the new continuity imposed by a Roger Stern Doctor Doom/Dr. Strange graphic novel. Not only did Roger's story kill my project, the damned thing was so incredibly well done, I couldn't even bitch in good conscience. I later used some of the material, in altered form, in an issue of "WHAT IF?"

Cue OMD/BND jokes. IS the What If? Radically different from the current OMD timeline? Im guessing it is.There are some differences. Peter and Felicia get married in part 2, but Felicia betrays Spider-Man for some reason and ends up being killed by one of Spider-Man's enemies. End of the story, MJ walks out of Peter Parker's life forever, Spider-Man abandons a normal life, joins Silver Sable's mercenary team and starts a romance with Sable.

I'm in a small minority, but I never liked Black Cat as a character. When I started reading Spider-Man she came across as annoying, constantly clinging to Spider-Man, but hating that he was a normal guy under the webs. When Spider-Man finally dumped her, I cheered aloud in the comic book store. I understand her character was written differently when Marv Wolfman was writing the book, but I missed that run.

To me, she seemed like a bargain-basement Catwoman rip-off, both in her feline motif and in the "sexy burglar with a crush on the hero" thing.

Anyway the one I really liked was the final issue I believe, when the Marvel Heroes were stuck on Battleworld while their kids were the main characters in the story.

That one would make a nice bookend to something like Spider-Girl, which came out of the What If Line.

The characters in this story were:

Crusader: Sarah Rogers, daughter of Captain America and Rogue. I can't see Steve hooking up with Rogue though.

Bravado: Balder Blake, son of Thor and the Enchantress, who has an arch rival in his half-brother, Malefactor

Malefactor: Vincent Von Doom, son of Victor von Doom and the Enchantress

Mustang: Clinton Barton Jr., son of She-Hulk and Hawkeye

Firefly: Matthew Storm, son of the Human Torch and the Wasp. Wow, this sort of makes Jan a cougar.

Torrent: Kendall Logan is the son of Wolverine and Storm

Chokehold: Trudy Creel is the super-strong daughter of Titania and Crusher Creel.

Moleculon: Tucker Reece is the son of Owen Reece, the Molecule Man and Volcana

Gator: The 250 pound son of the Lizard. Not sure how he was hatched.

Raze: Son of the Wrecker

The first volume of What if..? had a lot of stories worthy of being considered classics. The book was double-sized and always felt important, especially since the tales were often handled by creators closely associated with the characters featured.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y205/RoquefortRaider/wI.jpg

WI #3, scripted by Jim Shooter and written by Gil Kane, had an early Avengers team do the sensible thing: get everyone an Iron Man armor. It had a lot of the sense of wonder that an "imaginary" story should have... Getting the reader to say "wait, wait, are they ALLOWED to do that???"

WI #13 , produced by the classic Conan Team of Thomas-Buscema-Chan, was a sequel of sorts to an issue of Savage Sword of Conan, in which the barbarian learns of a well that allows one to travel through time. here, it sends him to the 20th century, and we get the expected culture clash.

WI#18 has all the weirdness of a classic Lee-Ditko Dr. Strange issue, although it's by Peter Gillis and Tom Sutton. This Strange's origin is slightly different from ours, as his original redemption is derailed by his becoming Dormammu's apprentice. Will the selfish doctor see the light beforeit is too late? One of the very best What if..? stories, as is the following :

WI #22, in which the title's concept is fully realized : what if one small detail in the history of our characters had been different? In this case what if Victor von Doom, instead of snapping at Reed Richards who pointed out a miscalculation in his formulas to contact the netherworld, had actually paid attention? This Doom doesn't become all good and nice; he remains the arrogant and proud man we know... But without the trauma of being disfigured (and probably proven wrong by his rival), he does become a hero of sort... albeit a tragic one. A Don Glut=Fred Kida production.

WI # 27 soothes the fans' pain at losing Jean Grey in the pages of the X-Men (because in those days, she used to stay dead). It's a story more-or-less starting with what Chris Claremont had planned originally: Jean didn't kill herself on the moon, but was depowered by the Shi'ar.
Here we see how she would eventually regain her powers, be pushed into becoming Dark Phoenix again, and destroy the universe.

WI#35 goes the same way by showing what would have happened had another beloved character character not died. Here it's the death of Elektra that is retold by Frank Miller and Terry Austin; only this time Bullseye is killed while escaping prison, and Elektra has to face the Kingpin's wrath when she fails to assassinate Foggy Nelson. She and Matt Murdock retire together, although the Watcher suggests that her inner demons may still one day destroy their happiness. Beautiful stuff.

WI#36 has John Byrne retell the story of FF#1 with our quartet never having gained their powers. It's a little "Challengers-of-the-unknown"-ish, but in a good way.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y205/RoquefortRaider/FF.jpg

An Essential What If is desperately needed.

There are a handful of trades already out there that are priced pretty decently:

I picked up most of these for $10 or less used, not a bad deal for some awesome stories.

There are some differences.

NOOOOOOO ho ho.

Full summary.

Part 1

Pete walks out the wedding cause MJ came close to dying from Spider Slayer attack and he ends up having bad dreams about Gwen dying that turn into MJ. He joins Sable's Wild Pack and he is acting wild cause he is angry about the situation. Sable notices this and talks to him telling him to chill. Aunt May is being an annoying old woman crying about Pete having no one to take care of him when she dies. He contacts Cat cause he figures that going out with another super powered person is less dangerous.

Cat is Cat all crazy and stuff and he is like chill girl. Kraven captures Spider-man then drugs him and buries him, Cat shows up and saves him and in his drugged state he calls Cat Mary Jane and that gets stuck in the back of her head.

MJ sees a newspaper article about Spidercat ( Their relationship name thingy ) and gets all woman jealous and decides to try to get Pete back so she calls his house but Cat answers. They just basically hang up in each other. Cat then goes and finds MJ, when she does they start arguing. Cat is all up on MJ' grill like, "Dont you mess with my man or I cut you, I CUT YOU! Besides, look! He gave me a ring, he ask me to marry him, IN YO FACE!" Some one hears this and figures Pete is Spider-man.

Part 2

They get married but Cat is pissed that Spider-man and Cat can hangout but Peter and Cat can't. Pete is like, "Chill babe i dont want my loved ones (May) to get hurt." then she answers, "I'm your loved one!" then leaves.

When Spider gets home Cat is bitching about a birthday card that Pete just got from MJ and says that she is trying to take him away then she leaves there as well.

The dude that figured Pete is Spider sells the info to Vulture and Vulture goes on a Spider Family killing spree. May survives her house being blown up cause she was "in the Basement." And just when Vulture is about to kill Cat Pete appears and beats the crap out of him. Pete find out that some one saw Cat and MJ arguing and figured who he was. When he is about to kill him, cause no one messes with the Spider Family, Sable shows up and stops him.

Spider takes Cat away and asks about what Vulture said and she confirms that she did argue with MJ at one point. Peter is like, " YOU BITCH! I told that this is the one thing you had to be careful about. YOU BLEEEEWWW IT! IT'S OVER!"

Peter stalks MJ then leaves and she notices it. Then he goes back to Wild Pack base and starts talking to Sable about his troubles. Day's later Vulture escapes from prison and Spider kills him. Pete is all still broody and breaks into MJ's apartment cause he has to talk about stuff. When she arrives she has a dude and he leaves. As Pete is hopping out he gets trapped by the Wild Pack for the murder of the Vulture. MJ comes out to defend him, Spider slips away and a battle starts. Cat shows up and takes MJ up to a high point away from the fight.

Cat confessed to the murder cause she needed to make up for her mistake. Sable thinks that she has MJ as a hostage for some reason so Cat tells MJ to go into the open window next to them. MJ slips and Paladin (Wild Pack member) thinks that Cat pushed her so he fills Cat full of lead. Pete saves MJ but then goes to Cat's dying body so MJ leaves.

Spider continued with the pack and continues having conversations with Sable until something develops and they start doing it Spider style.

The end.

It was very good.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the What If where Cap and Bucky both survived the war. I think it was issue 10 of the first series. Really good. And in light of recent events, kind of ironic.

I'm guessing that's the one where Professor X became the juggernaut instead of Cain.

Haven't they done two different ones of that story set at different times because of what was considered "today?"

Not strictly speaking an issue of What If, but check out the tpb Cap Lives Again, written by Dave Gibbons, art by Lee Weeks. In the original 4-part story, Captain America awakens from the ice only to learn that the Nazis won WWII. A great story, lots of action and suspense, and since it was four issues instead of one, a better developed story arc. Great stuff, worth checking out.

Yes that was the 1983 version.

This was the 1994 version:

Both times Nazis take over, but they're more subtle in one issue.

This is a great What If... if nothing else cos Frank Castle comes to an agreement with the symbiont at the end and they work as one. I always wanted a What If.. where Peter and the symbiont bonded as a Hero team rather than the standard possession route.

This was also a great What If:

http://www.coverbrowser.com/image/what-if/42-1.jpg

Simply cos it was not a downer ending like so many What If's...

The What If where Doc Doom was a Hero was mentioned above. I'd love to see an update of that story.

These were very good stories, and fun reads:

It's by Fred Hembeck, so it's hilarious.

Guardian Angels of the New York Mets put in a guest appearance.

Oh, wait... that was "Fred Hembeck Destroys the Marvel Universe." But I seem to recall that the Punisher was in it.

My favorite 5 stories from What if volume 2 , not in any particular order.
What if issue 24...Wolverine was Lord of the vampires
Tom Morgan's art is mediocre but vampire wolverine was cool.

.

I haven't read that since I was a wee one but still remember how cool I thought it was back in the day. I was also a Punisher fan back then so that pretty much topped it off.

I've always loved "What If?!" and I would advise the thread starter to check out some of the recent issues because it does seem to have gotten better. I think it was volume 3 that was horrible.

My favorite What If? issue ever was Volume 1, Issues #24:

What if Gwen Stacey had Lived?

http://www.comicsvf.com/scans/vocanc/whatifv1/24.jpg

Great issue and a very interesting take on things. Rather than shoot a web to save her (and break her neck by accident), Peter jumps down, catches her, then breaks the fall into the water. She lives, he tells her the truth about her identity, she forgives him for the death of her father and they decide to marry. Of course Norman Osborn doesn't die, but instead mails proof of Spidey's identity to JJJ. JJJ shows up at the wedding with the cops and Peter is forced to bolt. It ends with him on the run from the law, trying to figure out what to do.

Just read What If? Volume 2, #1.

http://www.4thletter.net/whatif/coverevo.jpg

What a crazy story the High Evolutionary sets off the the bombs that make people smart and their heads grow very large, but it amplifies every mutant's powers greatly making them "Godlike Creatures". All humans give up fighting and the world is at peace. So the "Godlike" mutants decide to leave Earth and bring peace to outer space and other worlds. The Inhumans and Eternals join them. They defeat th Skrulls, Kree and Shi'ar and eventually kill Nova and defeat Silver Surfer. Next the overwelm and defeat Galactus. Eventually they usurp Eternity and Death and merge with them to become a new being. While on years have passed and Earth humanity has become asexual with even bigger heads and veins popping out everywhere. They use telepathy and telekinesis. They Celestials come to attack but Earth as one mind kill one and the Celestials leave. So eventually the Eternity/Death etentity leaves to another universe and the universe loses all meaning and will start over again or something. Weird comic! Anyone else read it? Kinda very far fetched but entertaining.

I was a bit let down by it to be honest.

It was one of those books I had to wait YEARS to read and when I finally did (10 years after the fact) I just sat back and said 'huh.....Giant Cranium Wolverine leads Evolved Marvel Heroes into Space.....weird...'

It was just a bizzare end to a story that's pretty important to me, the Evolutionary War was one of the very first crossovers I'd ever read as a fan.

Ah,you're right (Memory is getting rusty, comic info being pushed out by calculus, lol), wolverine and the rest of the mutants took off leaving the big-headed humans behind....

Jeebus that story was bizzare and not at all what I thought would have happened if the Evolutionary's plan would have come to fruition.

How did you see his plan turning out? I thought he was trying to de-evolutionize, but i'm not that familiar with The Evolutionary Wars.
