Who would you like to see in a team consisting of Marvel's supernatural/horror/mystical characters?
Good or Evil. Both if you like. 8 people maximum.
What role would they play in the MU? Who would they go up against?
Here's my choices:
Midnight Sons
Ghost Rider
Damian Hellstrom
Blade
Terror, Inc.
Morbius
Werewolf By Night
Man-Thing
Frankenstein's Monster
Mephisto's Heralds
Blackheart
Dracula
Salome
Zarathos
D'Spayre
Belasco
Cagliostro
Morgan Le Fey
Crowforge

Id like to see Victoria Montesi again along with Sam Buchanon who still has the Exorcist Gun i believe, this also brings in a big bad in Chthon. Id also like to see Divinity Drake on the team, this could bring the team into conflict with Dracula. Shiver Man would be another good recruit. Id like the resurrection of Ulysses Bloodstone and Elsa Bloodstone to join the group too. Hmmm, so my group would be as follows
Victoria Montesi.
Sam Buchanon.
Divinity Drake.
Shiver Man.
Ulysses Bloodstone.
Elsa Bloodstone.
And as team leader Amanda Sefton.
There would be some obvious villains like i mentioned before, Chthon, Dracula etc. But i would like to see the return of minor characters such as Zadkiel, Wallow, Dreamqueen, Dweller-in-Darkness, Hangman, Skin-Bender, Null the Living Darkness and teams like Mys-Tech, Short Teeth and Night Shift.

Dr. Strange
The Shivers Man
Man-Thing
I would say Blade too, but he's a part of MI:13 now

Horror team. Hrm.
Interesting idea.
Blade, the Vampire Hunter. I think that Blade needs to learn to play nice with others in order to continue to evolve in the MU. Welsley Snipes and the movies are long gone, and Blade used to hang with Drake and King, so I don't see why we couldn't drop the "dark loner" act.
Magik. Illyana used to have to wrestle with her magic powers turning her more and more into a demon, and I like that as a story telling device. Let's see that again, fighting the darkness at the risk of becoming part of it.
Cloak. Without Dagger around, how scary could Cloak be? He's part of a very dark, very unexplored part of the Marvel Universe.
The Hood. I think after Dark Reign, that Parker Robbins will be cast aside and hollowed out. I can see him fighting to get his soul back from Dormammu. He'll make for some awesome looking splash pages with Cloak, too.
Dane Whitman, the Black Knight. Cursed Ebony Blade at his side, pulling him around as he tries to walk the line between light and dark. Again, some cool visual potential there next to Illyana and her soulsword.
Victoria Montesi. Daughter of a demon God, hunter of monsters. She's been off panel for too long, and it's time for everyone to find out what happened to her baby.

This has been attempted several times by Marvel, and the results have never been popular. I think that putting a bunch of horror characters together diminishes the overall horror factor, and mixing too many different elements leads to bland results. Marvel's mutants have always been too pretty on average, at least the heroic ones... ask yourself why they never explored the possiblity of a team of ugly mutants.

I think people know about the new Midnight Sons, but like me, they have their own idea about who'd they like to see on the team. I'd love to see Ghost Rider, Dr. Strange & Terror inc on this team.

I think that's because they don't pick around the whole MU when they make a team. Toss on a mutant or two, a former Avenger, and it could work better.

I don't think it's that...I think that they never choose the right artist or creative team. Imagine if it was like Brain K. Vaughn or Jason Aaron with David Finch doing the art...people would buy it up I think, especially if they were getting a fix of their favorite horror characters like Dr. Strange, Blade, Ghost Rider, etc. I think it's a combination of the right writer, artist, and characters.

Legion of Monsters (Marvel Premiere #28: Ghost Rider, Morbius, Man-Thing and Werewolf by Night) was a dud, although I'm sure that the abysmal artwork by Frank Robbins was at least part of the problem.
Midnight Sons got a big push, but fizzled in less than two years. That was Marvel's best attempt, and coincided with the rising popularity of White Wolf's various supernatural rpgs. I followed Doctor Strange for a while during this period, but ultimately got frustrated with all the angst and unending darkness. The overall writing and artwork of Marvel in the mid-'90s wasn't that great, so I wasn't interested in trying the other Midnight Sons tie-ins.
Howling Commandos was a flop. Giffen probably did an okay job writing it, and some of the characters seemed interesting. The very busy and cluttered artwork repelled me, so I never gave it a try.

Yes, yes, and Alan Moore took an unpopular Swamp Thing and made him a hit. But consider this... all these talented writers and artists don't seem particularly interested in doing a horror team. And if they aren't interested, it isn't going to happen. So there is apparently a problem with the basic concept.

There is apparently some demand for it though, because even though I haven't read past the 1st Installment, Marvel Zombies is on it's fourth series...so there is some demand for the large cast Supernatural books. Also, as far as Supernatural books, I'm also going to be buying Doctor Voodoo when it comes out after reading Rick Remender's pitch...I think with the right creative team, characters and buzz it could definetly be done. If the Midnight Sons get the right response from Marvel Zombies I'm sure we'll see more of them. I think if the powers that be at Marvel see that the Supernatural Team is creating a buzz, I think they'll definetly have a meeting a talk to the different writers about who might want to take the idea and run with it. One of the things that's exciting about the JLA and Avengers is that you get all of the heavies in one book...and Characters like Dr. Strange, Ghost Rider & Blade are very popular...a supernatural all-star team could definetly work. I'd buy it...

Brother/Doctor Voodoo - Sorcerer Supreme
Daimon Hellstorm - Ruler of Hell

Don't need anyone else, as these three should be able to handle any supernatural threat in the MU.

Agree with you on the "female Constantine" comparison. I included her because the Breathing Gun, the armored skin and her history with Daimon, which could create some interesting tension depending on how things go.

Does Nekra still have the other one? I think she used it before to kill Druid, then Hellstorm came in and set his corpse on fire and threw his ashes in a garbage can. Hellstorm often mistakingly gets the credit for besting Druid in a battle, but that' not the case. He killed Druid through subterfuge, by using Nekra as a pawn who would betray her lover. I think she used a breathing gun when she shot him in the head. I don't think they specifically say it in the book, but it seems that it was.

Now that Brother Voodoo is Sorcerer Supreme and with Hellstorm's little "hallmark moment" during New Avengers I'd actually be interested in a horror team.
Brother Voodoo as leader with Doctor Strange in an adivsory position.
Hellstorm because every horrorteam needs a snippy pessimist to bemoan their eventual failure.
Elsa Bloodstone for the Monster Hunting link.
Mecha Mage for techno horror.
Fing Fang Foom because I miss the old dragon. He'd make a much better "transport ship" than that thing the Howling Commandos were using.

Had to reread this to make sure, but Nekra did not use a Breathing Gun to kill Druid.
The gun used had been brought to the situation by a Smoke General, one of the leaders of the Dry Academy, which had been set up as the antagonist in the mini-series. Druid killed the Smoke General and the gun fell to the floor, at which point Nekra picked it up and started shooting him.
There would have been no need for a Breathing Gun to kill Druid, as he was neither angelic or demonic; good old-fashioned lead would have done, and did do, the trick.

i actually think the Howling Commandoes concept was more than decent. it suffered from a poor choice of artist (way too cartoony for horror) and unfortunate timing (would work much better as a resistance formed during Dark Reign). but, me, i like the idea of a dirty half dozen of immortal soldiers who have to deal with being seen as monsters while helping save the world. they'd have a slightly skiewed view of the world; compared to other heroes (even someone like Ben Grimm). they aren't just scary-looking. some of them would find themselves the object of religious persecution if they ever stepped out of the shadows.
anyways...
for the team, i need...
a frankenstein - this would basically be some of the best and brightest SHIELD had to offer who were killed in battle. their parts would be sewn together by Baron Blitzschlag (i think he'd belong in a series like this) and reanimated by nazi science. but "Frank" (need a new name) wouldn't be their collective personalities. he'd be kind of like the Vision; a recycled body w/ his own personality. he would retain the combat training and battle experience of his composite parts. he sometimes loses his train of thought, though.
a werewolf - i don't want to tamper with Jack Russell so i'd need another soldier suffering with lycanthropy. personality-wise, i'd want him to be kind of a feral version of Gambit; street-wise lady killer who has somewhat embraced his animal side. he transforms in stages; mood-triggered.
a vampire - Hannibal King - he's gotta turn up somewhere & i don't want to tie Blade down. maybe he could be more like his movie counterpart. or there can be a new character similar to that one. if the latter, he'd be the youngest of the team and turned by complete accident. you can imagine he's kind of miffed about having to leave his normal life behind.
an invisible woman - a former SHIELD scientist whose overzealousness resulted in her becoming invisible permanently; something to do with her being just a little out of phase w/ this reality. when she really concentrates you can see sort of a ghostly reflection of her; as if she were fading out of sight. to make up for her inconspicuousness, she's got a bit of a smart mouth. she's also always the first person to complain or make her opinion aobut a mission known.
a mummy - need at least one experiment-gone-wrong character - so i'd have him be a victim of Egypt's own attempt as a super soldier serum. the serum initially kills the guy but kicks in once he's dead and buried; leaving they guy kind of shellshocked. despite that, he'd have the 2nd best sense of humor on the team (after the vamp) and be the most knowledgable of current events.
a creature from the black lagoon - Kymaera - no, not Namorita but something similar. she'd also be a product of the nazis - trying to create amphibious assassins using bootleg atlantean dna - the result would be a tastefully deformed superfishwoman with spiky deep sea creature attributes (pretty much all of Namor's stuff but not as strong - puffer fish spines, ink projection, sonar, bioelectric discharge, etc.)
i haven't worked all of the bugs out yet but the above is the bare-bones. if i were going to add someone, id' be a kind of shy studious type w/ a rare genetic quirk that makes him kind of like Mister Hyde; complete personality shift, adrenalin-induced superstrength, slightly-enhanced musculature/twisted facial expressions. he'd be team liason, rarely a combatant, and have a one-sided relationship with the team's invisible woman.

Timing could be pretty good with Brother/Doctor Voodoo's high profile storyline in New Avengers.
I'd put him in charge and add some of Marvel's best known and most popular horror characters. So I'd want Johnny Blaze/Ghost Rider and Blade. I'd probably also take Werewolf by Night but would be okay to swap him out for a new werewolf or some similar character.
I want either Devil Slayer or Kylun from Excalibur. Both are good characters in need of a home and would add something to the team.
I like the idea of at least one loose cannon in the crowd and since we could use some sex appeal at this point, I think I'd go with Satana.
I'd also want some muscle. It the living colossus doesn't seem like a good fit and Frankenstein strikes me as dull. The Living Mummy could be okay. I might pick the Jade Dragon from Alpha Flight. He wasn't a horror character but having a dragon on the team and using one that doesn't tower over buildings appeals to me. I'd also consider shoe horning in Dragon Man just because he would be really different. I could see Satana wrapping him around her finger.
Finally, I think I'd add one more female character, preferably somebody to contrast with Satana. Amanda Sefton, Clea or Jennifer Kale are the ones that come to mind. I was looking for a spot for either Nemesis or Talisman from Alpha Flight but I think I've already got enough swords and knifes and Talisman isn't visually enough of a contrast.
So I think this is my line-up
The New Midnight Sons
Dr Voodoo
Blade
Johnny Blaze/Ghost Rider
Devil Slayer
Satana
Dragon Man
Werewolf
Amanda Sefton (didn't she have another name for awhile).
The team is dark enough for almost any kind of magic or horror story and has enough ties to the main Marvel Universe that there are lots of points of contact to existing villains, demons and dark forces.

Okay, that sounds about right. I just thought that breathing guns were designed to kill the supernatural, and it seemed like Druid had reached a god-like supernatural state. He drew his powers from Celtic dieties and ritual, and became the last living vessel of those gods, which probably qualifies him as a supernatural. I guess it wasn't a B-gun though, like you said.
