View Full Version : What pens?
Needing help. Just starting the development sketches for my new comic book and want to get it down right. Have been using pigment liners for 3 years now but have realized that in the comics I read (manga and cartoons), they use a thicker kind of pen which varies in line broadness like in the dragonball page below. Any help would be most appreciated!

Are you looking for pen recommendations? You can get brush tip pens like PITT markers and a lot of inkers use brushes for their linework.

If you insist on using a pen rather than brush or quill.... you might want to look into Pitt Brush Pens. They won't give you the same quality as a real brush or quill, but they'll give you the line weight variation you're looking for.

I just bought a set of PITT pens. the brush point one is pretty versatile.
aside from calligraphy pens I don't think you can get such varied line weights with one pen.
aside from PITTS i read/hear a lot of pros recommending Micron Pens. They come in assorted weights/sizes too.
But the rule for comics seems to be to use a superfine line for details and a broad or bold line for the outlines, with a lot of practice you may be able to do this with one brush or pen, but I think most artists/inkers use different weights or even instruments for different effects.
try quills and bruushes too. see what works best for you. but always be open to new tools and new techniques.
I often just use a 0.05 fineliner and add weight to the lines afterwards by going over them again. Gives me a little bit more control over exactly where i want the lines to have added weight.
