Astonishing X-Men #30 Review of Greg McElhatton's Review

It was spot on.

This six issue story by Warren Ellis feels like half a story. It's possible that he'll revisit some of the dangling plot threads later in his run - but as of now this storyline is a letdown. One would think that we would get far more backstory on the Chinese counterparts of the X-Men and the Parallel Universe Mutants seeking to invade our reality. One would be wrong.

Simone Bianchi's art, while beautiful, doesn't tell a story well. It's extremely confusing at times. And the character's facial expressions are frozen in botox.

It's still possible that Quesada had something to do with the poor state of this story. Quesada has been known to interfere with great writers' stories - Grant Morrison's run on New X-Men comes to mind. It wouldn't surprise me that Quesada told Warren Ellis he couldn't get into the backstory of the Chinese X-Men because Bendis had plans to explore that territory in a few years. Either that or Warren Ellis is as fed up with the Marvel Universe as the rest of us are and didn't want to waste his best ideas on a company owned project.
