This thing is amazing. I'm going to sound like a commercial here. But I can't think of any set-top service we have enjoyed as much as this.

For those who may not know, if you have Netflix and an Xbox (and high-speed internet), you get access to something like 15000 movies and television series to watch for free on your television, any time you want, as often as you like.

I was skeptical. Our cable service sucks. Picture and sound are bad. Channel selection is spotty. And past attempts to watch films through the internet were dodgy at best, with lots of breakage and poor video quality.

Additionally, the first selection of stuff available seemed a bit meager with a heavy emphasis on crap.

That has changed. Now, the streaming service offers remarkable picture and sound quality, far, far superior to what we get from cable. Many movies and shows are offered in true HD, with great sound and no break-up. We watched the first nine episodes of Harper's Island on NF streaming with amazing hd picture and sound, compared to last night where we watched the latest episode on regular cable and it looked like it was being shown through someone's butt, it was so bad in comparison. AND it had commercials.

We have cable and a tivo, and barely use either anymore.

There are thousands of movies available...lots of crap, surely, but lots of classics and foreign films, and even some very recent stuff that just hit dvd shelves. I live in the boonies and it's difficult for me to see a particular older film if I get the urge. I have to use Netflix as the stores and rental places don't have much selection here. But often, NF streaming will have it and I can be enjoying the movie in seconds. Tons of documentaries, tons of Imax films (we love those).

Even more interesting is the television series. Whole series are available for some of my favorite shows ever. Dexter, Both versions of the Office, 30 Rock, all of South Park, Monty Python, Red Dwarf, Vicar of Dibley, Outer Limits, Twilight Zone, Star Trek, Harper's Island, Heroes, Sanctuary, CSI, Mythbusters, The Avengers, Bullshit, Dr. Who, Fawlty Towers, League of Gentlemen, Friday Night Lights, Jericho, Californication, on and on and on, just tons of my favorite series, complete, to watch any time I want without even the fuss of finding the DVDs.

The thing is, I have purchased almost all of those series already in dvd form. Some, like the South Park seasons and Monty Python complete set and Dr. Who stuff, have run into some serious cash just for those series alone. Add it up and it's easily many thousands of dollars. Add in the movies I've bought that I would NOT have purchased if I'd had NF Streaming at the time and it comes out to be a terrifying amount of money I could have saved. Because now, even when I own the dvd, I still prefer to watch it on NF streaming. Great picture and sound, and the best possible convenience.

It has reduced clutter in my home, it has cut my dvd spending by a huge percentage, and now when I do take the time to watch something on television, it's almost always something I know I'll enjoy.

And it came free with my 15 dollar-a-month Netflix service and my X-box.

Add Hulu (free) and Playon (30 dollar lifetime membership one-time fee) and you expand your on-demand options even further.

I can't recommend it enough. I have had so many subscriptions to entertainment services (online games I don't continue playing, a tivo service I barely ever use, Sirius radio I haven't even turned on in weeks) that didn't really provide much value for me. This thing is RIDICULOUS and I use it almost every day, for fifty cents a day. And it's saving me likely hundreds of dollars a month.

I know I sound like a commercial, but it actually is worth buying an Xbox and Netflix to have this service, in my opinion.

Anyone else got this service? Any recommendations for obscure films on it?

Isn't it time you got yourself a PS3... given that DCUO is ** number of months away?

I just got done watching Real Genius on it (as per the silly movie thread) and am also going through the entire series of Dick Van Dyke.

yeah I watch a couple of shows every night on it. I went back through the entire catalogue they have available of old school Doctor Who and now I remember why I love old science fiction.

For those who don't have, or don't want, an Xbox you can get the same service using Netflix and a pretty affordable ($99 or less) device called a Roku (http://www.roku.com/default.aspx).

It also does streaming from Amazon.com.

I believe the Roku can also "go wireless" and just be used in WiFi mode too, and it can be hooked up with a variety of video options, up to and including HDMI (which I don't think the older Xbox 360s have).

Or, I believe, you can simply stream stuff directly to your PC from their website. That bugs some people though, but just be aware that you automatically have it as long as you have netflix.

I have had a ps3 since almost launch day. I use it mostly as a door stop. One of my least favorite consoles ever.

Misty & I see each other nightly for a couple of hours to watch shows together & give each parrot some cuddling. Are the shows that come across the Netflix Streaming savable to a USB key or something, to be viewable on another TV than what the Xbox is hooked up to, so we could watch them in our usual place?

I don't think so, but the Roku can go in a separate room, and it's only 90 dollars or so, or there are some new blu-ray players that can stream Netflix.

We have two 360's so it works out okay for us!

I've been tempted to do this for a while, but I was hesitant due to the XBox Live Gold requirement. Now I'm pretty much sold.

I hear Playstation 3 might get the Netflix service soon- not that it matters since I've been using it often with my Xbox. If it weren't for this service I wouldn't have seen 'Avatar: The Last Airbender', which ended up being one of my favorite cartoons since the Justice Leagues series.

I would love to have a PS3...

Right after I sell my house to pay for it!!

I'm now a reluctant Xboxer out of sheer lack of funds for a PS3, though my heart will probably always be with Sony. It was a matter of how much bang we could get for our buck, and PS3 just doesn't have the catalog Xbox does.

We've had the Roku player for about a year or so now and absolutely love it. We have it connected to our wireless router and move it to and from the bedroom and the living room. It's really the best and most valuable $100 I've spent in a long time.

And we currently have over 300 things on our live streaming queue. Lots of crap for sure, but lots of gems as well. We most recently finished up season 2 of Dexter and I just started watching The Tudors. My history buff Dad recommends it, but I'm still skeptical.

Other than that, we watch a lot of old films, foreign stuff and documentaries.

And didn't know that Penn & Teller's Bullshit was on there. Awesome. I'll add it.

I just got done with Summer of Sam on this thing. Is it me, or does it work really well as a dark farce?

In the UK, Sky are going to be streaming several channels in HD and offering an on demand service on Xbox Live.

The only problem for me is that I get the Sky channels through a cable service (not Sky themselves) so I would probably have to pay for everything twice to watch on Xbox so it wouldn't be worth the money. Sky customers get the current online service very cheaply and the Xbox service will probably be similar.

Sky is basically the UK version of Fox and they carry loads of US shows, movies and sports and offer several of those in HD.

The new Xbox service is going to allow viewers to communicate with each other while watching soccer which will be interesting.

Yeah, I keep checking all the time but I have so much stuff in my queue that I will be lucky to ever see it all. I LOVE Netflix streaming. Way more than cable, way more than tivo, way more than dvds.

Leverage and the Dick Van Dyke show were also added recently, and Weeds! Woo!
