I'm rewatching The Fugitive right now.... One of Tommy Lee Jones master performances, and a great example of a 'cat and mouse chase' film..... The hunted and the hunter. This example does a great job of presenting both sides in motivation and sympathy.
What other films out there portray the same kind of conflict so ably?

I liked Catch Me If You Can. Or is that too much of a comedy for what you were thinking of, Max?

I didn't see it but I'm looking more for dynamic than tone, so comedies fit.

It's great. It's based on a true story about a master con artist/forger (Leonardo DiCaprio), being chased by an FBI agent (played by Tom Hanks). Both gave great performances, and the plot was hilarious in how over the top it was (in keeping with the real story (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Abagnale)).

The Fugitive says it all, PBM... I agree... a lawman just trying to do his job at all costs to recapture an innocent and falsely-convicted man, while the fugitive tries to prove his innocence and capture the real killer...
Dr. Kimble: "I didn't kill my wife"
Marshall Gerard: "I don't care"
isn't a better one than this one, IMHO...

I know it's not a movie, but rather it was a TV series a few years ago that was in a similar kind of vein, but I was always and still am a BIG fan of the Pretender...
from wikipedia...
The Pretender is an American television series that aired on NBC from 1996 to 2000. The series starred Michael T. Weiss as Jarod, a genius and former child prodigy with "the ability to become anyone he wants to be," i.e., to flawlessly impersonate anyone in virtually any line of work. Patrick Bauchau and Andrea Parker co-starred as Sydney, Jarod's childhood friend and mentor, and Miss Parker, an operative for the mysterious organization (called "the Centre") that took Jarod from his parents as a child and forced him to unwittingly use his talents for evil. Jarod escapes in the first episode and begins traveling around the country, searching for clues to his true identity and posing as doctors, police officers, attorneys, and various other figures in order to help those in trouble. Following the show's cancellation on NBC, two television movies were aired on the TNT Network that picked up where the series finale left off. According to show creators Steven Long Mitchell and Craig Van Sickle, the character of Jarod was inspired by serial impostor Ferdinand Waldo Demara

The Pretender was awesome. I liked the Christmas episode where he was actually able to make a tasty fruit cake.
If we're counting other media besides movies, I'd also like to nominate the manga/anime series Monster. Basically take "The Fugitive", then make the actual guilty party that the wrongly accused guy is chasing into something akin to Hannibal Lecter. Then give it gorgeous Eastern/Central European backdrops and add in a ton of well done subplots.

and the worst thing about the Pretender was that after it was cancelled by NBC, they had 2 new movies on TNT, and then their entire Pretender series of movies was scrapped and we never got to know the full story or get a conclusion to it all... many questions left unanswered...

What really made me like it was the Barry Allen stuff.
