Garth Ennis did indeed read Commando! Actually, he's said he read lots of war comics - that includes Charley's War, which he's a big fan of, as well as Johnny Red (about the Soviet forces fighting offf the German invasion, but there's an RAF guy there as well so we don't have to see a Russian as the main hero).

Don't forget DC Thompson's Warlord, which although was a toned down version of Battple Picture Weekly, it was a fine little comic with war stories breaking out of the 'die Kraut' mold of Commando Comics.


I bought a pile of old Commando's from a car boot sale recently, and they're full of hidden gens. There's a few with John Ridgeway art, some with very early Bellardanelli and Ian Gibson art. Great stuff, only cost a fiver for 50 comics as well.
