View Full Version : Classic Comics Board, 10 Years Old?

Has this board been around for 10 years? I know I got my first computer in 1999. And I discovered the Oddball Board at CBR first. And then fairly soon after that the Classics board started. I remember my first post was the extremely witty question if this board was for discussing Classics Illustrated Comics.

Sir Tim should check his records.

And then we should have a party.

I've been at CBR for at least ten years, but I believe that when I first came here, the Classic Comics board was still the Golden/Silver Age board and it was still moderated by Jonathan "Goldenager" Bogart. After that, there was an interval when it was called the Old Comics board. I don't recall when it became the Classic Comics forum.

If you want to have a party, though, then I won't stop you. :)

Wow, this is actually pretty fascinating for me, being a relative new comer to the boards. I only joined up in August 2006, although since then I’ve been coming here almost daily. But hearing about how the forums got started and how they were in years gone by is really interesting.

Tell me more! I like hearing about the differences in the CBR forums between then and now. Also details of who ran what or moderated what are kinda interesting. Also, how about members of yester-year…you know, those that used to come on here all the time but haven’t been seen in years.

And I discovered the Oddball Board at CBR first. And then fairly soon after that the Classics board started.

So there used to be an Oddball Comics board? Affiliated with or run by Scott Shaw, who posts here regularly I assume?

Also Red Oak Kid, why is your join date listed as 2004 if you've been here 10 years? Did you originally have a different user account and if so, how come you changed it?

Again, this is really interesting. There's a guy who seems to post exclusively in the Music forum with the screen name Jonathan Bogart...is it the same guy?

If so, that's a bit of a revelation to me because I've often wondered why that guy even comes to these Forums at all. I've never, ever seen him post anywhere other than in the Music forum and he doesn't seem to be that into comics either. I mean, not that there's any reason why he shouldn't come here just to use the Music forum but it strikes me as a bit odd that he comes to a comics forum to discuss music. Surely there are boards out there that are exclusively dedicated to music, which would serve his needs better.

If it is the same guy, this would go some way towards explaining why he frequents these boards. Although I still don't understand why he doesn't appear to want to discuss comics on here???

Sir Tim should check his records.

Yeah, definitely! That would actually be cool if we could all meet up and down a few beers in celebration.

My initial activity on this forum started in 2003 - Summer. Astro City: Local Heroes issue #3 (Pastoral) was on the comical book racks, and I was very active at Bruisers, the official Astro City comical book hangout, and somebody over there pointed a hyperlink to a CBR interview with Kurt Busiek over here, and somehow, along the way to reading it I stumbled onto the Classic Comics forum (which is what it was definitely called by then) and Kimosabe's wonderful "Guess the Classic Comics Cover" thread (ROK had an associated cover quiz thread as well - started by coincidence and near same timing- but somehow it blended into one just prior to my getting here) and since then, there is hardly a day that I don't stop by to check on things.

Six years! OMGosh!!

I remember being very concerned, and also a bit annoyed when the entire forums were lost in May of 2004 due to a hard disk crash and no clean recoverable backup available. I was impressed by the generally above average comical book aware mainstream that hung around here. The core contributors at the time were ROK, Kimosabe, Slam Bradley, Ceiu, TGuy, MDG, MWGalleger, Rob Allen, Prince Hal, TheHistorian, to name but a few. Besides Scott Shaw!, Mark Evanier was a pretty steady contributor, and some fella named Busiek tags in and out as the need arises.

While the crew has as I said a good broad history of comics, some specialties quickly popped out. Comic Strips were/are well represented by theHistorian (where the heck did he get that fancy avatar?) If you had/have a query about Neal Adams, Red Oak was there to field it. The biggest Jim Aparo fan can be found in MWGallegar, but I already knew that from the heydays of the old Compuserve Comics and Animation forum circa 1994-97. Kimosabe has a soft spot for old time Westerns, especially his namesake and Alex Toth. CeiU has more knowledge of Earth2 than I have of Earth1. I think only Mark Waid, Kurt Busiek and Roy Thomas could challenge him in an Infinite Universes duel.

Rob Allen was/is a great link to many of the hardcore yahoo groups. I especially appreciate his diligence at seeking hard source information, and not just rehashing and retreading the faintest of fan rumors. Something that leads to too many false exaggerations and damage laden embellishments. My comic historical senses get very annoyed by the unthinking posters that indulge in that.

Michi, the "new blood" as the bad IgorBroker refered to him when he started stealing classic comics covers from me and ROK, is a great source for manga. But not too many people on this forum seem inclined to that material, which is a bit of a shame because some of my all time favorite comic series are from Japan. Rouqfort Raider is the fact keeper for all things from the Hyperborian Age (By Crom!) and for foreign comics of significant stature we can seek out our moderator for clarification. Especially the French stuff that I can't read but sure do like the pictures.

For what it's worth, here is how I 'member it.

In 99, the CBR boards had a different format. I don't know the name of this style, but it was just a white background with thread titles going across the page. Any responses were listed under the title in a staggered progression to the right side of the page.

Scott! Shaw had his Oddball Comics page at CBR and a message board for it. This was the first place I posted. One reason I started posting was to talk with Mike Kuypers who seemed to have very similar comic book memories to mine. Except for his fantasy of seeing comic book vending machines at an airport or bus station.

I think there was a message from Sir Tim on the Oddball board about a Classic Comics board that he was starting up. At least that is how I remember it. I don't remember any other moderator but him.

Of course we have the current format that began in 2004 when everyone had to reregister. I could be wrong but I think there was an intermediate board format between the original one described above and this one. It was the format that first gave us the opportunity to have an avatar. Obviously the first format did not have avatars.

I don't remember having a Guess the Cover thread of my own(tho I would fill in for LR from time to time), however after LR(Kid Flash) started his, I briefly had a Guess the Classic Comic Book Ad thread where I posted portions of ads that appeared in comics. It was fun, but a lot of work.

I still feel like newbie compared to many around here - but I think I first registered back in '02.

As ROK mentioned, I was Kid Flash back then (and still throw in a Wally West avatar every now and then) and took advantage of the May, 2004 meltdown to change to my current screename.

I hope nothing like that ever happens again, as we did lose a lot of great stuff.

I first came here to pose a question about the relative value to Canadian Editions of Golden Age books (I was looking to sell some at the time). I think that was the first and last money related question I've asked on here - as I found that this was a place for comic book fans, not speculators. I still buy and sell (mostly sell), but I prefer to discuss what's between the covers.

If my memory is correct - I started up the Guess the Classic Cover game back in summer of '03 (we were nearing 250 covers at the time of the meltdown). I believe it was pretty popular right off the bat and I took off for some vacation and at least one similar thread popped. Rather than have multiple versions of the same thread - I think Sir Tim step in and asked that we have only one game going. I guess we're celebrating our 6th year anniversary this summer - that's crazy.

I've become a Dad (twice!) since then - so my computer time at home is non-existent.

You will all remember how unbelievable Cei-U! was at the game. I believe he retired to be fair to us mere mortals.

Love of great chat everywhere - and I've had the chance to meet some folks face to face (Michi, Bill A, Sir Tim, Ray R) and hope to meet more someday.

I've had a great time communicating with many of you via care packages and have been astonished by people's thoughtfulness and generosity.

It's a great group on here - and I very happy I discovered this place.

I started visiting CBR the day Scott Shaw!'s Oddball Comics started running as a daily feature, some time in the late 90's. I must have seen an announcement for it on a usenet newsgroup (I miss rec.arts.comics.*...I guess they're still around, but I don't visit...). I think I jumped pretty quickly into the Oddball Comics forum, under the screenname "The Professor" (I am not, and was not then, a professor of any sort, it was a holdover from my Compuserve monicker, inspired by my favorite Gilligan's Island character).
I was satisfied with being an Oddball regular, and rarely ventured into other forums, but eventually made my way into the Classics forum well after it was under way. I ignored the GTCCC game for a very long time, thinking it was way too hard for me, but it did finally lure me in. The forum itself has now long been a daily draw for me.

I first came to CBR while I was still in law school. So it was probably in 1998. Tim is right, it was the Golden/Silver-age Board and then "Old Comics" (which I don't think anyone liked) before it became Classic. Sir Tim was still in high school when I joined. The last five or so years has really been a renaissance for this board. It was always pretty hit and miss with limited traffic. Now it's got a great core of posters and good discussion. And almost none of the problems you see elsewhere.

That's one of favorite things about this board. I get to learn things from people who are reall well-read. People disagree cordially. I can disagree with someone here about a creator or a comic book without fear of personal attacks.

I can disagree with someone here about a creator or a comic book without fear of personal attacks.

I think that's the key - we allow for different tastes and preferences.

Often times, someone's enthusiasm about a certain creator or series will encourage me to either check it out or, if it's something I've read before, try looking at it in a new light.

And by knowledgeable, I mean really, really knowledgeable. When the Infobroker and Kurt and ROK, just to anme a few, get rolling, I'm in awe.

I was just popping my head in here when the similar thread popped and then pooped. (Sorry couldn't resist). My memory banks assumed it was ROK bravely filling in the gap, and then graciously folding. Should'a know better. Texans never fold nothin'

I guess we're celebrating our 6th year anniversary this summer - that's crazy.

I gave up tallying the scores due to time constraints, but my favorites were the the Marie Severin, Astro City and Groo tallies. I especially liked people adapting and wearing there meager awards as avatars for a few days in honor. Dan (the Severins are the gods of comical book illustrating)Baily, Metarog(the comics are cryptic king) and Bill Angus are still toting theirs.

I don't want to steal anyone else's thunder.

I hate to say it - but one of the reasons I'm reluctant to note everyone who's ever shared comic book goodness with me is that I'm certain I'd forget someone, especially if they sent me something during my early days of fatherhood, or when Kat was in hospital or any other time my brain was stuck in slow-mo, which is 80% of the time.

I'm another who came here via the Oddball board. In 2001 I started looking around online for Silver/Bronze Age fans, and one of the first places I found was Tony Isabella's column. He linked to an Oddball Comics column, and I spent the late summer & early fall of 2001 reading the entire Oddball Comics column archives.

Only after that did I venture onto the message board. I still have the email thanking me for registering at CBR on December 7, 2001. The board was still in the older format that one or two people have mentioned (check Tony Isabella's board for an idea of what CBR looked like then). By New Years' of 2002 I was happily participating on both the Oddball and Classics boards, and will continue to do so as long as I can read and type!

It comes of being a dad two times over.

For the magnificent Marie tally, you got Captain Marvin, which makes me giggle just visualizing the priceless expression of excited idiocy that Marie masterfully captured.

For Groo you got the obvious character (http://wiki.groo.com/index.php?title=Taranto)

For Astro City I bestowed upon you this guy (http://herocopia.com/index.php/Samaritan). At least I think I did. And boy does that wiki page need some cleanup and updating and a lot more source material.

But for the last two, I used different source artwork for the icons. I've still got all them lurking on my photoshop/graphical workstation at home. I'll see if I can wedge some time into the schedule over the next few days to re-post a few of them.

Probably my favorite thread ever, I'm pretty sure. (What that says about me, I'm not at all sure, but I certainly do appreciate all the effort ROK put into it.)

I posted a score sheet for that thread as well. It's around here somewhere...

ah we go!

For a budding anticapitalist (remember, kids: Property is theft, unless it's something I happen to collect), I sure paid a lot of attention to the ads in the comics I was reading.

I must have joined CBR in 2003, as far as I can figure.

I mostly posted at the CrossGen forums, where Ratzo, Captain Jim (with whom I also shared an interest in Disney stuff), and several others found connections between titles, pieced together the universe's backstory, and discussed such vagaries as orange eyes and the shapes of different characters' tatoos. The social relationships that developed at that time were priceless--I particularly recall the ongoing hilarious flirtation between a male and female poster there (rather, he flirted and she come up with increasingly clever ways of saying "never"), but I cannot remember either of their names by now, I'm afraid. It was a strange time, but a good one.

This forum, I've visited from the beginning, but I've never posted very much, I'm afraid. My only claim to fame has been the creation of two "fake nostalgia" threads that got a lot of traffic.

Still, I enjoy coming here and discovering new old stuff--if that parses straight. Stuff like Manning's Tarzan and Gottfredson's Mickey Mouse, for example, that I'm indebted to board posters for introducing me to.

My favorite feature has to be Cei-U's annual Christmas threads. They have cost me so much money! That's how I got so into Don Newton that I started buying all his old Phantoms and Detectives. My DVD's of The Tick animated TV show also come from one of those contests. There's a lot more where that came from.

I don't know if this is the thread's tenth birthday, but I'm glad to have some opportunity to express my appreciation for this particular place and the people who dwell here.

I especially liked people adapting and wearing there meager awards as avatars for a few days in honor.... and Bill Angus (are) still toting theirs. -jb the "and silver-haired" ib -

It was the least I could do after you went to all that trouble.

Just the other day I was thinking of changing my avatar, but I think I'll hold onto it a little longer.

it'd be really nice to finally meet some of the faces behind the avatars.

I'm the only one you'll recognize.

I hope.

If some of the rest of you look like your avatars, maybe we shouldn't meet after all...

I don't know exactly when I got here, but it was before the Reboot. I used to have a Quislet avatar with a caption noting my Preboot status.

That's one of favorite things about this board. I get to learn things from people who are reall well-read. People disagree cordially. I can disagree with someone here about a creator or a comic book without fear of personal attacks.

Got to totaly agree with you; people are much more friendly and helpful on this board, I don't even get corrected for by bad spelling here.

Don't be including Bad Infobroker in that list. That guys a scoundrel!

I had to dance around to three different cow-phew-terds here at home before I finally found the Marie Severin icons lucking on this old 500mhz collecting dust and spider-webs in the corner. (Think maybe I can convince one of them to bite me?)

Here's a spare Marie icon that I'm pretty sure went un-assigned back in '05. I am herewith bestowing on you BD to use and abuse as you choose.

Ah, I thank you. And a nice choice too, well-representing perhaps the first issue of Strange Tales I ever picked up. And it went on to become one of my favourite Silver-Age titles, as I began to search out all the back issues of that great one-two punch monthly of Doctor Strange and Nick Fury.

b-d gets Dr. Strange and I got a cartoon snake in the Mirthful Marie giveaway! Hey, I'd shift to my Groo avatar if I wasn't committed to the avatar game this week...

I can't believe I scored that high--seems like months since I've got one (I also can't believe I missed an Anderson Hawkman this afternoon.

I think that last image is for the old ad contest MDG. But I know what you mean on that Hawkman cover. The worst is when you scan through the right title, but still fail to pick it out. That's happened to me so many times. Most recently on that Girls' Romance cover that just showed up. I'm usually half asleep when I play this game later on at night.

I thought the snake was soooo cute...

OK, lets see if I can find something higher class for the RocketMan.

First off, (and this has been nagging me for some time) this is a scanned directly from my copy of Astonish 95 and properly cleaned up at a high resolution, instead of being a cheap clip from the low resolution images from the GCD. Few years back they were the best source material I had on hand.

So I know I'm tempting gritty, tightly clenched fingers and all, but please Dan, consider doing a quick avatar update.

Second, (and I had to reactivate the spider-webby and dusty computer to find this image- which is why this is a seperate post), here's a space-themed icon for MW to call his very own...

We've met. So you know I actually have 4 eyes in person.

As to this board, I am constantly in awe of the collective level of intelligence and knowledge on display and merely watch and try to learn as much about great comics as I can from the people who know them best.

Thanks!

Ah, OK...that at least explains why a guy with no obvious interest in comics hangs around in the music sub-forum of a comics forum.
I still like comics quite a bit, I just don't buy or read any of the comics that people around here like talking about, so I don't have much to contribute.

Love comics. Dislike superheroes.

OK, I got it. As I say, it explains why you're here, so to speak. Which was something I was always kinda curious about.
