Mark Evanier (http://www.newsfromme.com/archives/2009_06_10.html#017246) reports the passing of comic book artist turned animator Dave Simons at the far too young age of 55. I remember Simons as one of the better inkers of the late '70s/early '80s, having a clear crisp style that enhanced the look of every penciller he embellished. My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.

It's doubly saddening when someone dies at such a young age. As a longtime Conan reader, I was quite familiar with Dave's art and mourn his passing.

My heartfelt sympathies to his family.

Unfortunately Mark got Dave's age wrong - Dave was 54, not 55. You can find a more accurate eulogy here: http://ohdannyboy.blogspot.com/2009/06/dave-simons-1954-2009.html

Sad news to hear of his passing. I recall his work on early 80's Ghost Rider. A fantastic inker - he helped make that comic shine.

Dave and I both worked at Marvel Productions in the early 1980s; we never actually worked together because I was on stuff like MUPPET BABIES while Dave was on the "straight" stuff like G.I. JOE. But I liked him and his print work.

I have one indelible memory of Dave Simons. It was one of those super-hot summer mornings that scorch the San Fernando Valley. At our morning break, many of the Marvel staffers would go out to the parking lot behind the building on Sepulveda in Van Nuys (it now houses the production company that does THE REAL WORLD and PROJECT: RUNWAY) and purchase food and drink from a "roach coach" that would routinely drop by. Anyway, I was astounded to see Dave, stripped to the waist and laying spread-eagled on the broiling-hot hood of his car, getting himself a quick tan. He must have had a high tolerance for pain, that's for sure.

Rest in piece, Dave.

Aloha,

Scott!

Dave Simmons was the inker of Ghost Rider during my favorite run on the series. He also pencilled & inked the one really good issue of Team America. I was fortunate enough to not only witness him getting reaquinted with Ghost Rider penciller, Bob Budiansky at Feburary's NY Comic Con, but I was also able to shake his hand, tell him how much his work had meant to me & I wished him luck in his battle with cancer.

It kinda hit home with me, as my best friend, who is only 41 has cancer as well & now it looks like Dave died of cancer at the same age as my Pops.
