View Full Version : What if there was a substantial run on Uncanny using only the Dark X-Men roster?

What if Marvel decided to spice things up and produce a 10-year run on Uncanny that used nothing but the Dark X-Men roster? This doesn't have to be a Fraction-penned run either. Any number and any selection of writers and even editors could be involved. Same goes for the different type of stories. What would the stories actually be like? What would your reaction be?

Fine. But the choice of characters is far less important than the creative team. A good writer can make any character worth reading, while a crappy one can suck the life out of any team.

Only having the Dark X-Men on the book would be good for the short-term, but after about five years I think I'd be bored of the characters, and want the roster to have changed somehow. The cast also seem so much at odds with each other that I can't really see how they'd be able to last together for so long.
Having said that, though, X-Factor has been around for about five years, and I don't think I would've minded if the cast hadn't ever changed on the book. For a mainstream title though, I think I'd need more variety and change and turmoil.

Agreed, and art team, as well. I don't want to see all teeth and smiles from the "Dark" X-Men.

Yeah, but how long did it take for the All New X-Men's roster to change?
(Not counting T-Birds death)

Sunfire quit after one issue, even before T-Bird's death, if I recall.

In my mind, that proves my point. Didn't particularly care much about that era of X-Men. Sorry JAU.

Ha. Very good. Okay apart from Sunfire leaving and T-Bird dying.

Seven issues in, in Uncanny X-Men #100, when the shuttle crashes in Jamaica Bay, and the Phoenix Force puts the real Jean in a cocoon and takes her place, then. And even if you subscribe to Jean=Phoenix, she still took a leave of absence at this point while recovering from the crash.

And Banshee leaves shortly after losing his powers, and Kitty joins up, Scott leaves for a couple of years, and then Rogue joins all in a relatively short period of time.

It could be good/fun for a while, but ten years is way too long.

I'd probably read something else instead. None of those characters really interests me enough to continue shelling out $2.99 (or is Uncanny $3.99 now?) per issue. I like some of them okay (Daken, Mimic, Cloak & Dagger), but others I could just care less about (Namor, Xavier, Weapon Omega). Just not enough there to hold my interest long-term as a reader.

How about just having a stable core cast for at least two years. A team that we can see some true character development in. Uncanny now is like an 80s episode of GI Joe. Only a few characters get actual development and the rest are window dressing.
It's sad that fans of certain characters can only look forward to their faves popping up in a panel or two -with a line of dialogue.
I wanna see how Cloak and Dagger fit into the Xmen roles.
But Wolverine II, Daken? I would rather have the real Logan then his look alike clone son.
And Weapon Omega, Mimic, and Namor i could hardly care for.

Other than the costume, how does Daken even remotely look like Logan? He is, imo, far superior in design that Wolverine.

Good.
Yeah it needs a solid creative team (I'd be fine with Fraction and the Dodsons for a loooooooong time), but I can't stop geeking out about Namor and Xavier being on the same team. If these two of my 3 favorite Marvel characters were just joined by Magneto I would be set. Viva Namor!

I actually did a double-take at that post to make sure it wasn't a put-on. Then I shook my head and disgustedly licked onto another thread.

Indeed.
I voted good. I think it would work well for a year and then people would probably want the old X-Men back. Some of the cast (Dagger, Daken) are wonderful anyway. Some are horrible, like that dues ex machina power stealer mutant. But he could die in the first arc and be replaced by someone more interesting. The rest of the cast is tolerable.

Maybe under a different creative team, this could work.

No for I'll only accept the True Dark X-Men A.K.A. Rogue's X-men:evilsmile:
That'd be cool but only if Sunfire or Silver Samurai would join up. They both seem like perfect picks for a team of Dark X-Men.

Under Fraction's scripting, they'd be reduced to spouting cliched Japanese banalities about zen buddhism and corporate slave culture.

Sunfire would have been perfect since they turned him into a villain anyway. A much better fit here than as Sinister's lackey.

Bad, because the Dark becomes status quo and loses its charm quickly... not to mentioned likely making the X-Men a harder sell for Marvel on new customers.

Dark X-Men should replace X-Men: Legacy...
Yeah that would be pretty neat. I could see Rogue leading a team of Dark XMen and Carey doing a great job with it. As long as it didn't involve that lame Shi'Ar salvage crew.

It would be commercial suicide and a shot in the foot of the franchise, in every way (artistically too). Plus, the very own premise of this team and the characters that are on it indicates it's impossible to last long (and shouldn't last long past the crossover anyway).

I would rather just see a few of these characters stick around for a while and mix with the other "regulars". Especially Cloak and Dagger and Mimic. Maybe Weapon Omega too...he kind of has that "I need to make up for my past discretions" thing going on--sort of like Rogue back in the day after she put Carol Danvers in a coma.

First of all the Dark X-Men line-up is more interesting and exciting than the line-up that there is in Uncanny X-Men. Professor X taking a pro-active role with Emma and Namor, you have three strong personalities and three characters you can't mess with if there ever was a fight with any super-villains. The rest of the line-up is intriguing of possibilities with Mimic, Cloak & Dagger and Weapon Omega. If these guys were the real X-Men I would run to the store to buy that book.
I wouldn't mind as it was suggested that they would replace Legacy. Marvel could have Chris Bachalo on this book so it would be Carey and Bachalo together again. I especially would enjoy seeing Bachalo drawing Mimic and Cloak.
