I had no idea this (http://marvel.com/news/comicstories.8294.Strange_Tales_Max_Arrives_Septem ber_2009) was in the works but it looks pretty cool. Lots of notable indie types like Paul Pope and Peter Bagge tackling Marvel characters in a MAX setting. I love the cover.

Really? You didn't know anything about it? It was teased almost two years ago, but nothing happened, really glad it got the green light, some cool stuff here.
Peace.

I can barely remember comic news from two weeks ago.

This sounds interesting but I have a question...are the MAX titles currently in the 616 Marvel Universe? Or are they now like "Marvel Knights", in that they tell stories that are not part of established Marvel continuity?

They are outside of regular MU continuity.

Well, now we know what the next run of 'original' content on Marvel Digital Comics is going to look like....

Yup... Luke Cage and Jessica had their first "meeting" in Alias. You couldn't show that one in the regular titles.
Chuck Austen (is he banned from comics and back doing porn?) had a MAX version of War Machine that wasn't. In that one, Doom was Jewish and his castle was being staked out by paparazzi hoping to get a "money shot" from one of his "dates".

Oh man, I'd love to see this as a regular series. The art reminds me of Mike Allred from X-statix (that's a series I'd love to see come back). This should be good.

I'm hoping that this is the long promised indy mini featuring the story with the Thing growing a Chia mustache and the Machine Man/John Garrett team-up.

Yeah, that's kinda what I thought. Certain MAX titles from the past (like Alias for example) were definitly in regular Marvel continuity but then, so were the "Marvel Knights" titles originally...whereas now the Marvel Knights imprint is definitely non-616.

I'm hoping Marvel releases a poster of the Paul Pope cover. I really, really want that on my wall.

Interesting sidenote, according to the following ifanboy video, Chuck was one of the original artists on the famous Miracleman series!

He was for an issue under the pseudonym "Chuck Beckum" or something like that. I believe it was either directly before or right after Veitch's birth issue. It wasn't awful art, but compared to Leach, Davis, Veitch, and especially Totleben, it was the worst art in the series. (Not to even mention the great art Bucky was doing when he and Gaiman took over the series... changing styes every issue during The Golden Age, and every issue still looking fantastic.)
