I've absolutly loved Green lantern and Corps since i first started reading them both during the Sinestro Corps War and have read anything that i could get my hands on linked to the Lantern universe. Whilst trawling EBay yesterday i stumbled across the complete Darkstars collection that featured john stewart as one of its members and was an offshoot of green lantern. I would like to know was this series any good and is it still in continuity or was it wiped out by one of the crisis and lastly are there anymore previous series linked to the lantern books that would be worth a look.

I've only read a handful of issues from this series, but I liked them.

...The series started out good, but when it shifted away from Ferrin Collos and kept him as a fugitive for way too many issues, it started to drop off in quality. Bringing Donna Troy on as a Darkstar wasn't a bad idea, but as we later saw it didn't last.

I'd argue 'not', and that is coming from someone who owns every issue.

Really mediocre series that could not be saved even by some early Travis Charest art.

I've read 6-7 issues.......Cover art was nice (I think Alan Davis did several of them), but the interior artwork, as well as the writing, weren't worth a look. Pretty disappointing, especially on the writing aspect.

They weren't wiped out. In fact here is some tidbits on them all.

1.) The Darkstars basically were supposed to take the Green Lantern Corps place in the DCU. This was done after the Corps were destroyed and Kyle Rayner became Green Lantern.

They had a membership drive and soon enough Donna Troy and John Stewart became Darkstars. They also had a few other ex-GL's become Darkstars. The idea was that the Darkstars would become that.

Except none of these additions worked. And Donna being in Green Lantern and New Titans didn't make fans wanna pick up The Darkstars. By 1996 DC folded up the tent on the idea.

2.) The Controllers

Those pesky aliens who compete with the Guardians were the guys behind the Darkstars for awhile. Soon after the Darkstars ended and all...they tried creating Effigy. A GL Rogue as their next champion. No idea where he went.

3.) TRINITY

A good series in 1993 to pick up if your into big space stories is TRINITY. Which featured L.E.G.I.O.N , Darkstars and the Green Lantern Corps clashing. Its weird that within a few years L.E.G.I.O.N and the Darkstars were basically destroyed.

It was actually a pretty good series. Definitely worth a read if you pick it up from the bargain bin.

A lot of the regular readers didn't like it when Ferrin Colos was backburnered and Donna Troy (and John Stewart) became the central characters of the title. By that point, the book was on it's last legs and that was pretty much a desperate attempt to keep the title alive. I do think the quality of the book still remained even though the cast went through a drastic makeover.

but the interior artwork, as well as the writing, weren't worth a look

I loved the Travis Charest issues art wise....

1) Pretty much most of the ex-GL members who ended up in darkstars were killed by Fatality.

3) Trinity - that was the big event that kept Hal Jordan from earth when the Cyborg & Mongul destroyed Coast city. Drove Hal over the edge when he tried to use his ring to rebuild the city and got shut down by the guardians but hey , Johns blamed everything on parallax , the yellow fear monster , a cop out.

Darkstar is a pretty average book , i wouldn't really bother unless you want to read about Stewart & Donna although the main star seemed to be Ferrin Colos. Most of the darkstar fallout after their series ended ended up in the green lantern comics anyway , the decimation of majority of the darkstar by Grayven and then the murders by Fatality.
