View Full Version : The Quintessential Villain

Oh yes.

First off, i chose villains who have a long history with the X-Men. i also wanted villains who have influenced the team somehow. While i love Cassandra Nova, she doesn't have enough history with the team. Same for William Stryker, despite him gaining more prominence after the X-Movies.

No "Other" option. That's like Ross Perot on the ballot. i don't want votes taken away because some are single-minded in voting for their favorite D Lister.

Tho' i have many D Listers i love.

Again, i tried to find photos that represented the nature of the villain.

Here we go!

Magneto. Dark side of Xavier's shiny head.

Quite a history with the team. A visionary in his own right. Yes, a good chance of winning this.

My first villainous crush. Let Rogue go, mister. You're not carny enough.

Or Mystique? Slinky, R-rated Smurf who's invaded the ranks and hearts of the X-Men several times.

Mr. Sinister! Bondage Man gives new meaning to "Dungeon Master".

Attempted to shape the childhoods of many mutants. Also responsible for the Mutant Massacre, a story that resonates today.

In his younger bondage days.

Juggernaut? The photo speaks for itself.

Sebastian Shaw? Lord Imperial and Oscar Winner for "As Good as it Gets."

An interesting Red King to Xavier's White King and Magneto's Black King.

Selene! Blackhearted villain who often takes more subtle approaches.

Personally...i think she just wants more boys in her harem.

Apocalypse. Best known for the Darwin Approach and AoA (or, the 90s era).

Shadow King! Hah. Miiiiiiiind Controooooooool.

Not a favorite for many, but he fits the criteria.

How about Donald Pierce? A bit of a fumbler...but what the heck. The Reavers had some input.

And for the wildcard.....

The Brood! Thanks, Sigourney Weaver!

Have at it!

It comes down to 3; Selene, The Shadow King and Juggernaut all of which are encompass evil the others have been washed to look gray. Juggernauts Cytorraks Lackey so I flipped a coin between SK and Selene and voted.

That's why i voted for Mr. Sinister.

Seeing mutants as experiments gives it the mutant as oppressed vibe....he has tons of history with the team...plus he is purely evil.

Magneto might win this.....and perhaps deservedly so. Nonetheless...he's been a friggin member of the X-Men. That makes him less quintessential for me.

Magneto takes this one.

His backstory as a jewish child in a concentration camp makes it easier for the reader to identify with his extremist views. There's an inherent empathy for the character that most villains never earn.

His lifelong friendship with Xavier and their divergent philosophies makes for a compelling relationship. As much as Erik opposes Chuck and the X-Men he also respects them to a degree (depending on the writer at the time).

Indeed, Magneto was....is....and always will be right!

Can't see anyone but Magneto as the quintessential villain.

I was actually generally torn here, between Mr Sinister a hot guy in bondage gear with a creepy mad scientist vibe and bad ass powers and Selene, a hot girl in bondage gear with a creepy "Death lover" vibe and bad ass powers.

But ultimately Selene won out. But she needs to ditch her boy-toy Wither, people are starting to talk ;)

I can't seem to find "Professor X" on the poll?

In a lot of ways, Magneto is part of what defines the X-Men. The relationship he has with Xavier is truly polar (no pun intended). It's doubtful that one can exist without the other. Sinister, Shaw, these guys are all great, but if we're talking the Quintessential X-Villain?

If Magneto didn't exist, the X-Men would have to create him.

I voted for Selene she's just so evil.... that and Sabertooth didn't make the list.

Sabretooth, like Lady Deathstrike, is a bit more Wolverine-specific. That was my rationale.

Magneto might win this.....and perhaps deservedly so. Nonetheless...he's been a friggin member of the X-Men. That makes him less quintessential for me.Actually, I never considered him a member of the X-men. Even when he was school director, I saw him more as "Professor X temporary replacement at headmaster position".

For me he's the quintessential villain because he always ends up fighting Charles and his X-Men no matter what. The gray tones just make him a more complex character. But he's the original and foremost X-Men enemy and the first whose name springs to mind when you ask that question. The yin to their yang (or vice versa  ). Like Dr Doom for the FF.

Honestly, I think Magneto probably is the quintessential villain, but that's such the easy choice. Plus, I'm embarrassed to admit it, but the leather-daddy pic of Sinister was very influential in my decision here...

Sinister.

He's got the classic evil origins of a man driven by an insane obsession and a long-lost love as his motivations, he's willing to pull the strings and manipulate from afar but never is afraid to get his hands dirty, and he's created trouble for numerous X-Men on numerous occasions.

Toss in his use of many a deadly henchman and his actions directly leading to some of the most convoluted, tragic X-men stories and that makes him a clear winner!

@Cub: I know, right?

I voted Mr. Sinister..

Your reasons are also why I did not vote for Magneto, he would be the one if he was not part of the X-Men in the past.

I voted for Selene (of course)...Pure evil, at its absolute, self-serving, wicked, bitchin-HAWTT! best...and she's an immortal sorceress (which would obviously explain the need for more harem boys...they are spent so quickly, one cannot have too many...;-))

Frankly, Selene has the best costume of any character in all of creation. So choice made.

Where is the "other" option? I wanted to vote for Black Panther.

While Magneto has been the oldest and most recurring enemy of the X-Men since 1963, that's not why I'm voting for him.

The X-Men exist to fight supervillians, but so do the Avengers, Fantastic Four, etc. What really sets the X-Men apart from other teams is Xavier's dream of peaceful coexistance between mutants and humans.

While the other villians listed threaten that dream, it's mainly Magneto's philosophy of homo-superior domination that constantly threatens coexistance.

What makes Magneto the quintessential villian of the X-Men is he's more than just another bad guy.....he's the biggest threat to the whole "mission statement" of the X-Men.

The thing is I've never seen Mags as a villain. In every story he's been in since the Claremont run I've seen what's called a "Designated villain" meaning someone we're SUPPOSED to see as the bad guy

But at the end of the day he wants to put an end to prejudice, bigotry, war and oppresion. Yes he uses force to accomplish these goals but it's force applied to the cruel the hate filled and the prejudiced. I'll be honest I've always thought that if the X Men would stop getting in the guys way the world they live in would probably be a much nicer place. I mean the only thing he wants to do is stop bigotry and hatred. I fail to see how that's a bad thing

I voted Magneto. Not just because he's so freaking cool, but after looking at other options I keep being reminded of all the crap Magneto has tried to pull over the years.

He's just doesn't quit. And unlike Sinister and Juggernaut that seem to be like one moment threats, Magneto can and has held the world hostage and given the X-men some of the their greatest fights.

Didn't pick Apocalypse because he reminds me of fanatical fundamentalists Magneto whooped him in AoA, so there.

Magneto was right!
