View Full Version : Weird Speech Patterns

It occurs to me that in the Marvel universe, a lot of characters have speech patterns that don't match their origins. Wolverine is from Canada, but he's always depicted having an American accent, Thor is a Norse god, but he speaks old English, which the Norse didn't.

Thor speaks Early Modern English, not Old English, which is, in fact, very similar to Old Norse.
Groot has a pretty weird speech pattern.

I like Thor speak, sure it doesnt really make sense but I would miss it if they were to like "correct" him.

Oh, I'm not complaining, I mean, imagine a corrected Wolverine, who calls everyone by' instead of bub. Heck, have you ever seen the original Wolverine that spoke like some prissy British guy? I couldn't stop laughing at him, imagining the Wolverine I'm used to kicking his butt just for talking funny. Just pointing out that it's weird.

Well, a lot of Canadians speak with something very similar to an American accent, due to the fact that most canadians live and have grown up within radio/TV broadcast range of US stations coming out of Buffalo, CHicago, etc.
Not all Canadians have a "Canadian" accent. I lived in New Hampshire for a few years, and most of the people there talked like us regular folks do down here in New Jersey, although there were some that talked funny.

He's supposed to be from Northern British Columbia though if I recall, not sure what language they speak, but I don't think bub is part of Canadian slang.

Thor is a Norse god, but he speaks old English, which the Norse didn't.
Stan Lee figured Thor ought to speak godlike, and the best he could come up with was having him speak as if he were in the King James Bible translation.
I never liked it, and today it looks really silly, but that's how it got started.

Funny, I would figure a god would talk like Bruce Campbell, or Jim Cummings.
Honestly, I'm pretty ambivalent to Thor speak. I think it works well enough within the context of the character. I'm just annoyed that out of the blue they started making Ultimate Thor talk that way.
Inversely, I'm glad that they've finally moved Hercules away from it. I think it adds a bit more of a distinction between the two characters. Plus, I feel it demonstrates that Hercules is more human centric than Thor who grew up with the other gods in Asgard.

Yeah I would actually like Thor to have a Scandanavian accent - that would be cool. And Wolverine's catchphrase should be 'eh?' not 'bub'.
But everybody knows gods should speak like British Shakespearean actors (preferably bad ones!) Except for God... who everybody knows sounds like James Earl Jones.
He's supposed to be from Northern British Columbia though if I recall, not sure what language they speak, but I don't think bub is part of Canadian slang.

I too hate that Ult Thor talks like regular Thor. Regular Thor's accent is fine (skilled writers can make it seem badass), as ong as it isn't overdone.
The one *tkkkt* accent that really *tkkt* bugs, errrr tkkks, errrr pisses me off *tkkt* is Bug's from *tkkt* Guardians of the Galaxy.

(not Marvel, but. another annoying one. is Ab-Death. from Wetworks. What kind of. a name. is Ab-Death. anyway?)

Yeah I would actually like Thor to have a Scandanavian accent - that would be cool. Well, just assume he does. It's not like you can always tell the character's accent from the way his speech is written. That's why characters like Collossus and Nightcrawler have to shout random foreign words every now and then to remind people of their origins.

I do. The very first humour issue from volume one. It was awesome.
Speaking as a Canadian, eh?, I have to say, Wolverine doesn't talk like any other Canadian I've ever met. We don't say 'bub'. We have, though, adopted a fair number of British colloquialisms, so if Wolverine ever said "Bob's your uncle," that would be perfectly in keeping with him being Canadian. And having an American character make fun of the way he says oot and aboot would be fun to see, right before Logan eviscerates him.
Also I've always wanted to see Wolverine fly into a berserker rage over the fact that Americans remove the U from words like colour, neighbour, rumour, etc.

Rumor has it that Wolverine's neighbor says leaving the U out of words like armor makes him positively see the color red.

Not so much a spy as an assassin. I believe he was in Soviet custody for a while. He still would have a hint of an accent.

Yeah, I was going to point that out. What most Americans think of as a Canadian accent it actually people from the Maritime Provinces... and very small representation of Canadians. Most of us (at least from Ontario west) seem to sound more like actors on American TV and movies that most Americans I speak with do (and I work in a call center, I speak to Americans all day).

I'm Canadian and I have a lot of family in California. When we get together, we sometimes talk about our accents. Our speech is very similar, but Americans do say "huh" and Canadians say "eh".
I think when people think of funny Canadian accents, they think of people from Newfoundland. Regular Canadians can't understand what those crazy newfies are saying.
Also, Canadians sometimes get lumped in with the sing-song midwest accent. I live close to Minnesota and North Dakota and sometimes I can't believe the "Oh yah, yoo betcha, he's a good friend, yah, yoo betcha there, yah know..." stuff that comes out of the mouths of North Dakotans and my Minnesota friends.
Personally, I tend to talk more like Terrance and Phillip!
"Eh, fawk you buddy!"

That's the thing about accents, you can't hear it in your own voice, but anyone from a different area can, especially if they're particularly attentive aboot them. For instance, I can't hear any accent in my voice, but my friend in Hawaii says that, despite my best efforts to avoid it, I have a slight southern accent, it's barely noticeable, but it's there.
