View Full Version : who would you like to see take a step back?

for the past 8 years, ever since Morrison came along in 2001, Cyclops, Emma Frost, Beast, and Wolverine have been in the spotlight (whether it be New X-Men, Astonishing, or the recent Uncanny). the result of which is that many of the other X-Men have taken a backseat. which of the 4 would you like to see take a step back from the X-spotlight to allow someone else the chance to shine? if you like, explain how they'd do so in a way that made sense; don't just turn it into a hater thread.

Cyke needs to serve on another team. More than anyone. Ever.
He needs to get away from the mansion. Join the Defenders, or the Champions, or the Avengers. Something to help broaden his world view. He's very narrow, and he's one of the only X-Men to never go out an see the world, be a part of something other than all he's ever known.

Well Wolverine needs his over appearances cut back. Cyclops needs him being in every X-title cut back.
Outside of that I don't mind too much. The biggest probably is their interaction with other characters are next to none. And thats what keeps a book exciting.

If they got rid of Astonishing, I would be fine with them having a major presence in Uncanny. I understand the need for Emma and Scott to have large visability right now, but I'm losing interest in them.
Wolverine doesn't need 12 books, so I'll go with him.
There is one person who I would love to see cut back, but they are not in this list.

Wolverine.
Like three limited series or one-shots. Plus two ongoing.
Plus on all X-Books usually.
And Avengers.
Emma Frost may be poorly written and overexposed right now, but she could never compete with the Wolverine overexposure.
With the others, I find Emma Frost just needs someone to write her well again and Cyclops....I honestly think he should have a big, dramatic and important death so that Storm can get back in the spotlight.

i wouldn't mind beast so much if he actually got something done. he worked on the legacy virus for years only to have moira figure out the cure. there's no way beast will be the one to figure out the cure for m-day. if he's getting facetime, he at least deserves to get results. if not and he's going to just keep spinning the wheels, let him do it off-panel.
wolverine would be easy to lift out of the x-men since his role is at a minimum right now and he could focus on x-force and new avengers.
with the way things are progressing, scott and emma will soon be clashing, leaving the door open for one of them to leave.
i wouldn't mind a major status quo shakeup. it'd be refreshing to have a new core team after all these years.

I hate all of the characters in this poll, but Beast will win my vote. A clear indication of how awful he truly is. Failure should not be tolerated or nurtured and therefore Beast must go.

I have come to accept that Wolverine will always have hundreds of series so that's no problem. Emma and Cyclops shtick has become tired and boring to me. They both need to sit down. Cat Beast can die.

He needs to get in on the action and get his paws dirty.

Being a cat has terminated his right to receive any type of spotlight. It was the worst secondary mutation ever! The only out is death. One of the other fools in the science club can take his place as team scientist

Emma Frost. I miss her White Queen days in CC Uncanny X-Men and New Mutants. Less exposure, but always great when she appeared in a story.
Start a new Generation X series and send her there.
Because PC commands not to put her back in her original role.

I can't think of anytime since the Legacy Virus have I liked him. I loved him in the issue Infectia died in, but that was because I was hoping he got infected.

Madison Jeffries is my favorite member of the science team, for sure.
Anyway, Beast is not a threat, X-Men is basically Cyclops' story and I love Wolverine.
So Emma, please go immediately back to the loft, pack your bags and leave.

Wolverine should take a step back in the X books... but Marvel can continue to market him through his (pardon me if I am slightly off this is only an approximation) 5073 other appearances per month in Marvel titles.

I also lost some interest in Beast when he turned cat.

Cyclops : I like his new found confidence, and his direct approach but he needs to back off from appearing in all the X-books
Emma Frost : I liked her best as a villian, enjoyed her characterization during New X-Men but not so much afterwards
Beast : I find him really boring they should have never killed Moira, either have him work behind the scenes as a staff member in the white house in mutant affairs or kill him off
Wolverine : He's been all over the place, he needs to cut back his appearances a bit, he's oversaturated, to much of something will eventually make you repulsed by it
Emma Frost needs to back the fuck up for a min. She's always all up in everyone's Kool-Aid.

No one. This series is supposed to be about moving forward, not backward. Omnia mutantur.
Ditch Emma. I'm sure they can come up with an interesting way of removing her from the lineup.
And break her and Cyclops up in the process. It could potentially lead to a whole new, wild and crazy development for him: being single. Has he EVER been without some sort of love interest? He was with Jean basically from the start, then every time she "died," he found a new woman....Colleen Wing, Aletys Forrester, Madelyne Pryor. Wasn't he even lusting after Psylocke for a few issues??? Imagine how much more time Cyclops could devote to his duties as leader of the X-Men if he wasn't distracted by all these women?

i agree with this about scott. let someone else have the relationship spotlight. he's had it for almost 50 years. he needs to see what life is like as a single for a change and possibly explore why he always needs to be in a relationship whether it's with jean or someone else when jean's dead. and emma needs to be the one to do the dumping in that relationship. i don't think he knows what it's like to be dumped.

Cyclops: Join X-Factor for a bit
Beast: Mighty Avengers now and take Anole with you so i can enjoy New Avengers more than I do now
Emma: Return to being White Queen and kill one of your clones

I think Dazzler should take a step back. We've seen too much of her. X-men should be Cyclops, Emma, Beast, Logan and Pixie. We don't need everyone else.
Wolverine needs to take 50 steps back. Emma can't come close to the amount of books that Wolverine has shown up in.

UGH all of them. We can easily make an iconic core team without any of them, think of all the X-icons there are that are being underused or not at all right now.
Even make the Astonishing team a big group of similar-powered replacements, anything. Just let someone else shine for a chance!
Instead of Beast, but Sabretooth like he was written in Carey's X-Men, all chained up and hostile.
Instead of Wolverine, put X-23 or Wolfsbane.
Emma out, Psylocke in.
Cyclops out, Cannonball in.
Then add Rogue, Nightcrawler, Angel, Iceman, Colossus, Magik, and we're gold. The book will sell brilliantly, even without Wolverine, Emma, Scott, or Beast!

Any of them but Wolverine.
I've actually grown much fonder of him the past couple of years.
I'd like to see Cyclops either chill out for a bit in Alaska or something or join X-Force full-time.
Emma needs to retire until Morrison, Milligan, or someone of their caliber can resurrect her personality.
Beast. must. die!!! unless his coffee machine can squirt out a Cuban-Native American with a bowl cut.

All of them. Except Beast, who's in a comfortable enough position as it is.
I actually couldn't care less what happens to Wolverine... he's usually off in his own little world and I don't usually notice him, he's kind of just there in the X-titles. Making his mandatory appearance every now and again.
Cyclops could take a personal step-back, and Emma could be given less exposure and centricity.

none of the four. i think they work well as a core group of x-men with other various characters coming in & out. there should be an x-man book without them at all, which we have, but i think cyclops, emma, beast & wolverine are a good representation of "the" x-men in the modern age.
