I'd presume the point of the cartoon was to say a lot of Republicans are going to be merrily hitting out at Sotomayor now she's on the Supreme Court - after all, they did do that.
But I don't know why Obama is being drawn in.

Also present in that picture is Sotomayor, a woman of Puerto Rican descent, being depicted as a pinata, an object from Mexican culture. And then there's Obama with a sombrero.
I'm confused by what the satirical message is supposed to be.

Presumably, they all want to take a shot at her, but they know that if they do they'll be depicted as racists. Obama is encouraging them because he knows he wins either way.

Wow. I always forget how much I enjoy nonsense phrases.
Off to read the Complete Edward Lear now for the good version.

I'm confused by what the satirical message is supposed to be.
There's this new female Hispanic judge and because she's female Latina, the Republicans are going to eagerly attack her because she's a female Hispanic judge - and (Coke to Grazzt) Obama hopes they'll do that because the media's watching, and they'll look bad.
There's an ugly assumption there that Obama made her a Supreme Court judge to bait Republicans for political gain.

But what do Puerto Ricans have to do with Mexican culture?

Haven't you heard? All Hispanics and Latinos are Mexican. It's a U.S. cultural law.

Well, either the cartoonist doesn't know the difference or thinks the audience won't know the difference.

Therein lies my problem with the satire. Either the author is ignorant or he's making fun of ignorant people--but his cartoon doesn't make that clear.

....Am I not white anymore?
As for the cartoon, the fact that it looks more like a lynching than a piñata at first glance? Not very helpful.

Which he absolutely did. One of the many aspects of the nomination that works so well. You don't think that Obama will be plastering Sotomayor's face on Spanish-language fundraising mailers come the next election? It's a 'barrier' that has absolutely zero political downside to him, because Hispanics are a heavily courted political group and anyone who says something racist-sounding will get pounced on by the press, and he can use it to alienate Hispanics further from the Republican Party.
As to the pinata thing, she's usually called the first Hispanic (or Latina) SC nominee, hence, the Hispanic/Latina pinata; and the pinata is a common metaphor for this sort of situation anyway. Particularly since her appointment is heralded as a watershed for all Hispanics, not just Puerto Ricans.

I think he's making fun of people not knowing. It's the Sombrero that kicks it over for me, without that I'd be more uncertain, I don't think it's that common a thing to be claimed to be worn by non-Mexicans. But I'm not in America, so I could be wrong.
What I find a bit odd though is the link you post has two comments, and neither is going at the angle we are. The first is talking about it being offensive to women, the other comments on it being a minority strung up on a tree and apparently totally missing the Pinata reference.

Editorial cartoonists are paid to be assholes. None of this reflect what I've been seeing all my life, that racial barriers are eroding.

Hmmm...I see how that could have been misread. What I meant is that Justice Thomas got much worse treatment in cartoons directed @ him when he was first nominated, than Judge Sotamayor has gotten, so far. I remember seeing cartoons (mostly in Black newspapers) depicting him tap-dancing, and wearing KKK robes, among other gems. It hasn't stopped since he's been confirmed.

Thomas got attacked as a token because he is a token. Duh!
Actually, not the word people would use round my neck of the woods, but why not keep it bland for once.
We might also question why it's supposed to be wrong for black journals to caricature black people, especially extreme right wingers who've bought in.

Why is it that people in both parties keep glossing over that President Obama is half white and was raised by white grand parents.
