Kyle Rayner

Kyle is an awesome character. Along with Dick Grayson, problably the nicest guy in the DCU. While his run may not have had the massive space opera scope that the current GL series has, he was written very 3 dimensionally and you really feel like you knew the character. I hope he gets to shine more in the future. He's great in GLC but more would never hurt.

and yes, I love him. He rocks. Love reading about him in GLC. He kicks ass and takes names and gets plenty of screen time.

He was like the Peter Parker of DC but way more awesome hes also a mangaka his constructs like mechas, anime characters, full suits and massive constructs make him unique the only Green Lantern with such a vivid imagination. No one could replace him, i think the same goes to the others GLs, the way i see it...

I remember when John was an architect above all else...Now he's all Mr. badass Marine man with a ring....

The only time I've loved this new John Stewart was when they were comparing him with Kyle in GLC.

I'm glad to see Kyle get some solo time though. I don't want to see ANY of the earth based GL's get shafted in any way.

I like Kyle a lot. He's the original "must discover his own potential" GL before it got worked into Hal's backstory. I just wish Kyle didn't have to be in space all the time. I find I get really bored by DC's cosmic scene if a character sticks with it too long. I wish GL followed a structure more like the '60s GL book where one issue could be in space but he'd be back on Earth by the next issue, instead of the whole "GL takes place on Earth, GLC takes place in space" separation.

You wont see much of that anymore because there are FOUR earth based GL's. All of them can be doing more earth based stories and logically whichever one is on JLA roster should be featured on earth.

Actually, I never read a comic where I disliked Kyle. He's the character I most identify with when reading JLA stories, or GL.

I kind of wish he was still the main Green Lantern, but Hal will always be the greatest GL, and Kyle is far more interesting in GL Corps.

I was just playing with the whole "Hal did this, Hal did that..."

But I do think it's fitting that Hal came back, because Emerald Twilight was totally out of character and just a gimmick, and the "greatest GL" works for him, even though I know they can say that about any GL.

Yeah, he's my favorite though. One story I liked was the Green Lantern YEAR ONE annual where Kyle and Hal switched bodies and Kyle saw what it was like to be a young Hal Jordan.

Its Ok, Hal along with John used to be my favs before Rayner came in 1994, I know Jordan is badass -like antihero- but there is no doubt Rayner is the most noble, heroic and selfless Green Lantern of all (IMO).

Of Rayner girlfriends she is my second fav, the first being Donna Troy and the last Jade (the only reason i still like Jade though is becouse she is daughter of Alan Scott) I think Kyle and Natu will be together becouse i dont see Rayner cheating on her with any of the females New Guardians, and they might be too evil for him anyway, heh -yes, Carol included lol-.

kyle was the lantern i started with. (During the build up to him becoming ion.)

I always liked him. I went back, as i often do, and read about hal. followed his journey and enjoyed seeing him return in rebirth. But i still felt kyle could have gotten more spotlight in glc, but thats difficult considering what that book was.... makes me excited for new guardians.

It sounds like it's just a relaunch and a minor reboot on some characters. Seeing as how the current GL continuity is the one that inspired the movie, it's probably the part of DC that has the best chance of staying safe.

its simpler because no one can whine about continuity violations if they have no idea what is in or out. Which allows DC to tweak events and outcomes as they see fit.

I think the big goal is to put older fans and new incoming fans on the same page. For the first time if we recommend a book to someone new to comics we don't have years of back material to go with it. Try recommending Morrison's Batman run without telling them to read the last several years of stories with the new.

True that is what is nice about marvel. U can point to the big events and a person is basically caught up.

Grant wrote Kyle as the POV character of the JLA brilliantly. My favorite part was how he grew more confident as his experience wiwth the league grew and by the end of the Rocks of Ages arc, he shot down Guy's ribbing "and Guy.....I am Green Lantern. I am the League" or big league or something like that......(dont have the copy anymore).

To me that was when I realized that he was no longer a rookie.

And I would like to see him back with Donna, she was the best GF he had and it was cut short to accommodate the stupid retcon in Wonder Woman.

Love Kyle! He is the only GL I actually keep up with. The others aren't really for me. I like John but not enough to consistently buy titles with him staring ....well unless he's teamed up with Kyle that is. Anyway can't wait for his new series to come out looks and sounds epic so far!

Since Kyle has been cheated on before, I think it's a personal subject to him and that he'd never stray because of that. If him and Soranik break up, it definitely will not be because of that.

Natu and Donna actually have a lot in common regarding how they interact with Kyle. They're both very motherly, supportive, gentle but firm when they have to be, they encouraged him on his art and pushed him to be more responsible and get into his projects. Both are wonderful girls.

Although I do wished that they brought Kyle back to earth again, he's pretty cut off from the every day normal life he had when he first started so there hasn't been a great deal of human interaction since he's been in the Corps.

I really wish Tomasi would get a chance to write Kyle again. I thought "GLC" really thrived when Tomasi was writing it with Kyle and Guy as the leads. And IMHO it was often better then the main "GL" book. But I haven't been that thrilled with Bedard's run, doesn't seem to have Kyle's voice down as well as Tomasi did. Hoping he can improve on that though.

I had always enjoyed GLC to Green Lantern. Even when it was just Guy headlining the book. When Kyle joined up Tomasi did a great job giving their partnership meaning.

With Bedard Kyle just seemed off. The was also virtually no sign of a partnership between Kyle and John. It felt more like they just happened to be in the same area rather than they were old friends working together.

Reading this thread, it just goes to show how popular Kyle is. I appreciate the way Geoff has always written Kyle in a good way despite bringing Hal back. That was classy of him. But honestly, I think its a good business move too. If they took Kyle off the GL books, I really think the franchise will loose a lot of readers. Kyle really seems to have as much love as Dick Grayson :biggrin:

Would love to see Morrison write an arc of New Guardians and show Kyle's new POV as a leader.

Alex, Donna, and Natu all sort of made Kyle face his flaws and forced him to be responsible, be held accountable, be honest, and be more communicative. Jade also taught him lessons, but regressed in maturity from writer to writer. It seems each writer forgets any lesson Kyle has learned in love whenever they write him, unfortunately.

I'm not denying what Alex and Donna did in the slightest, but with them, things ended differently with different causes. Alex's unfortunate death did put things in perspective for Kyle, but I don't think he grew much as a person in a relationship until Donna came along. And with her, she was the one who left because she had to deal with her own issues.

Jade, well, I don't dislike her, but I don't think she ever really knew what she wanted. Even after they got back together she ended up seeing someone else behind his back, and in his own freaking apartment to boot. I'm not sure of what exactly went on when she died and gave him the Starheart power, if she realized she still loved him or not, but in the end I think her sacrifice was what brought out the remnants of his love for her. That, and I think the guilt from failing another woman he'd once loved.

For Soranik though, things are different; this situation is completely and utterly on Kyle's own head. Soranik has her own issues, certainly, but Kyle initiated the lie. We all know he had his reasons, but he still did it. Whatever lessons he's been taught in the past, up until now he still hasn't really changed, he still keeps making these kind of mistakes. He sees that this one is entirely his fault and he needs to do more than just face his flaws, he needs to actually make an effort to change them.

I think once the next arc in New Guardians starts, and this whole "multiple rings" things sorts itself out, Kyle will be start to get his life on track.

Whether thats with Soranik, or even still as a Green Lantern, only time will tell....

I have read all of the Green Lantern and Kyle the most. Mostly because his background is different than most of the green lanterns. Most of the GL seemed to have a military background. Kyle was a starving artist. Unlike most of the GL, he acquire his training not through the corp but through self-training.

The other difference is that Kyle has a good relationship with his mentor Ganthet, even though Ganthet isn't that much of a mentor (he skimped on Kyle's training and then ask for the ring back when he didn't perform as well as he had hope). Most of the GL either have an adversary relationship with the guardians or just obey their orders.

One of Kyle's greatest achievement appears to be his time as ION. When he acquired more power than Parallax, he resisted changing things and instead gave up his power. To bad he failed to restore Guardians as decent individuals.

What are the best Kyle Rayner TPBs/stories? Whether they be from GL series/events or his stint in the Justice League. I'd really like to expand my Kyle Rayner library...

Think I might dig out all me old Kyle GL's. He's always been my GL, after jumping on board some time after Emerald Twilight and working my way back. I stuck with the book pretty much until it all went a bit too spacey (as in Outer, not Kevin :tongue: ) and that Ion malarkey.

I kept me eye on what was happening with Kyle after the old bloke came back and Kyle was back in the Corps, but I never picked up the book cos I wasn't really that into the Green Lantern 'bigger picture' and just wasn't keen on seeing Kyle as part of ensemble book.

That said, with the reboot and the New New Guardians, I'm back on board and it's great seeing Kyle back in action again. Without wanting to put down the other characters (who I'll be honest, I don't really know), I'm hoping his new book will largely focus on Mr Rayner, at least for a while.

I agree with you wingnut - Kyle is a character that needs some more respect in the DCnU.

We have to remember, he was the guy whom upheld the legacy when Hal went nuts.

The fact that he wore all seven ring types and SURVIVED should make him a shoe in to be the White Lantern. Would really set him in as the leader of the New Guardians, and get another GL to replace him (maybe Sora? O.o)

Or, he could just go full Blue and replace Saint Walker (seeing as he was part of the "old" New Guardians, with Hal, Carol, Sinestro and the lot) and would make the team comepletely "New", again, having another GL come in to replace him (seriously, whose thinking Soranik here??)
