View Full Version : Is Blackest Night becoming overdone.

I am still looking forward to it, but what I first thought was going to be a nice tight "big story" within the GL books (like the Sinestro War) is becoming another overblown BIG EVENT from DC. It feels like it's taking forever to start with more colored lanterns than I can keep straight. The more it's hyped and the more setup going into it, the more likely it will disappoint me. I'm not prejudging and saying it will suck like Final Crisis. It's just that when I look at Previews and see half a dozen tie-in books and minis, I begin to worry that it's just another DC Crossover where "everything changes" and nothing is resolved.

I agree. DC is milking it, probably to the detriment of Blackest Night. Maybe a JLA tie-in, as GL is associated with the League, but Titans? What exactly do The Titans have to do with GL? Same with Superman. I think Blackest Night would have been best served in the core GL books, a couple specials and as I said, maybe a JLA tie-in mini. Keep it contained.

Seriously ? You can't keep 8 Lantern Corps straight
As it is, in addition to Green, we've only really seen 5. Indigo and Black have yet to show up other than in previews. I think Johns has been smart to roll them out slowly to give readers a chance to get to know each Corp and their primary members before bringing a new Corp in ....

That was a minor nit. I think I was trying to say the story might start to get overcomplicated. Maybe I'm still suffering from post-final-crisis syndrome.

The more I see Blackest Knight tie-ins popping up, th more I am inclined just to skip the whole thing and drop the Green Lantern books.

Hopefully the so-called tie-ins will be like those OMAC tie-ins from Infonite Crisis wher everybody got an issue with a randoml Omac popping up for a fight, but none of them even slightly contributing to the main story and therefore entirely skippable.

Well I mean it is..."The Blackest Night." I mean it's been a part of the GL oath forever, since the 40s? It's quite a big event, and has been one defining part of the GL legend for years. It shouldn't just be one short miniseries, IMO at least.

It would kind of seem like the Guardians were overacting a little, if they've been talking about this 'Blackest Night' for years, and it was just some little mishap that happened to a small number of people.

I believe the original plan was for the event to be mostly contained within the two GL books with a few spin offs and one shots but Didio thought the idea could and should be used with other heroes involved. So while I do think it is a tad overblown at this point, I'm hoping the Batman, Superman and Titans books will be more or less self contained and spotlight the reactions to the resurrected characters without detracting or muddying the main story to be told in the GL, GLC and Tales Of The Corps.

I still have faith in it since Johns is overseeing everything about it. Plus Tomasi's role is more than just "GLC writer" as well.

I think it kinda sucks that it's not a purely GL-centric event like Sinestro Corps War was, and I really don't want Didio involved much with this and risk ruining Geoff's plans, but the closer we get to it the more interested I am with seeing how this affects the rest of the DCU.

I'm viewing this event as a 2-pronged event. The War of Light is primarily a GL/GLC event while the Black Lanterns are an off-shoot of that event that effects the entire DCU.

I think the Titan tie-in will probably be more related to some of their dead members coming back as Black Lanterns, rather than having much to do with the main story. And they certainly have enough dead members to deal with...but, yeah some of this will probably be very "missable".

That's why I say have the DCU reaction covered in a JLA: Blackest Night mini. We don't necessarily need oodles of tie-ins that tie-in only peripherally.

On the other hand, I think it also should not involve a tie-in about the zombie Flying Graysons.

Here's an idea, don't read the minis. Nobody is forcing you to. Stick with what you want and leave the rest. Like a salad bar.

As far as I'm concerned BN is the real Final Crisis, so it should encompass the DCU.

Yeah, the extras are just that , extras.

I didn't have to pick up the Final Crisis mini's to understand the main series but if I felt like it I'll get them later.

All the one-shots and random mini's just serve to complement and accentuate what's going on in the main story.

If you just want the movie you buy the standard version, if you want all the sexy extras, documentaries, deleted scenes, etc. you pick up the Extended Special Edition copy.

Good lord man, are you bonkers?

Zombie Flying Graysons convinced me to buy that miniseries, and probably all the others!

I see BN as the final redemption of Hal for causing Zero Hour, so I'm really glad that it covers the whole DCU. Finally, a mega-crossover event that I can finally get behind.

Blackest Night, Green Lantern and Green Lantern Corps. Everything thing else is just gravy. This is still small for a summer event, it nowhere near SI, IC or CW.

As long as Blackest Night is centered on GL, all should be fine. A few tie ins with some big DC characters is really all that is needed. If this is going to be that huge, and that threatening, it would be strange if other heroes didnt join in.

I mean, whats the justice league going to say. "Oh my god, an apocalyptic undead invasion! Into action!.....oh wait. This is Green lanterns problem. Im sure theyre able to handle it."

*shrug*

I'm more looking forward to Blackest Night: Titans than I am to just about any of the BN spinoffs. I doubt I'll even do much more than glance at Blackest Night: Superman.

I guess that makes me the "problem" fan. I actually enjoy a lot of these big, mega crossovers.

I am just going to get Blackest Night mini and GL and ignore the rest. I figure if anything worthwhile happens in all the tie in crap, I will read about it online.

Do we know in fact that the main story will be contained in the BN series and the GL books?
There was a major villain in the last Final Crisis book who I never saw before. He came from some Superman mini I didn't read. Can I be sure they won't pull the same stuff here.
