View Full Version : Blackest Night foreshadowed?

Right, so we all know Johns had plans in place from very early on, nay even the start of his current run on GL, for the Blackest Night storyline. I just happened to be reading back over the series recently and noticed in one of the early issues (think it's 2 or 3) that Cowgirl touches his costume and commented on the hot and cold elements... Green, she said, was warm; whereas the black element was cold. Hal responds, I think, "Usually" and that's the last we hear of it.

Now, am I missing some sort of intrinsic and well-known psychics regarding the makeup of the GL costumes, or is this a foreshadowing of something to come? Is Hal going to destroy the Black Lanterns from the inside out by becoming one of them, because - as one already resurrected - he's an eligible candidate? Or is it hinting at something else?

Ideas, people! What comes to mind?

Well, I don't know about the story, but in real-world physics, that's wrong.

We see colors because objects reflect light off. Black objects reflect very little, instead of absorbing it in the form of heat. Therefore, black objects are usually hotter (assuming no other facts involved) than ones with bright colors. That's why people tend not to wear dark colors in the summer.

Whoah, that's almost a truism you went to the trouble of posting there!

On a serious note, leaving aside all reality as this is comic books were talking about, anybody got an idea?

I really think Hal's gonna be all of the Lanterns at some point. He's got green, blue and red down already, with orange a strong possiblity given GL #41's ending.

And I think Hal is eligible to being a Black Lantern because he was dead at one point. Even though I don't think they've explicitly said, I think having been dead in the past might make him susceptable to joining or being controlled by the Black Hand and pals.

If they do follow through with Hal's deceased state in the past - it fits with the idea that Johns, who brought Hal back to life, has had this master plan all along - your idea seems like a viable option.

He's also got yellow down; during the SInestro Corps he wielded a bunch of Yellow rings at once (GL 23; it has a cover homage to the famous Emerald Twilight cover), plus he was Parallax for a while.

I'd also argue that what he did during his Star Sapphire Arc also gives he a connection to Violet (the whole french kissing a Zamoran to have the Star Sapphire crystal possess her rather than Carol or Cowgirl.) But most people don't agree with my interpretation of that and actually want to see Hal in Violet/Pink.

Wow! Okay, first off, great obsservation about the green=hot, black=cold thing. I have read #1 how many times and never caught that! Excellent! Knowing Johns and how early he likes to foreshadow things, I'd say that very well could be a reference to Blackest Night.

As for Hal having every ring, that's another great observation! And he has been dead, so you could say he's eligible for a black ring, and I wonder if at the end of Blackest Night, the fact that he has possessed one of each ring at some time or another (if our theory holds true) could very much come into play...

You guys are sharp. I'm glad I came on the boards this morning.

I never thought about Hal having that link to the Black Lanterns but... that could also be why we keep hearing Barry, Bart and Conner will have big roles in Blackest Night too, they all just came back from the dead.
