I cannot stress the awesomeness of this movie enough.
It will wrench your heart out of you body and make you love it for it.

I hope so. Everybody said the same thing about "Wall-E" and I found that movie to be average at best.

I think Wall*e is brilliant, and an extremely bold move on Pixar's part.
I've not seen Up yet, but a few friends who work @ Mousechwitz have seen it, some several times, and rave about it.

I felt the same way about Wall-E. I was underwhelmed, but maybe because I saw at home instead of the theater. I should probably give it a second chance.
Up looks like fun though.

I just saw it, I love Pixar's films.
It was as heartwarming as ever, and there was a Toy Story 3 trailer in front of it!
The animated short was hilarious too.
I don't want to spoil anything, but "Up" was a great film for anyone.

I'd say that Up is definitely Pixar's funniest movie. It's also a little more risky with adult themes than other Pixar movies, I'd say.
Unfortunately, I didn't get to see the short beforehand, because I saw it in 3d:frown:

I liked it but I don't think it was Pixar's best. I thought there was a lot more humor in this movie to any of the others. The talking dogs was a genius and excellently executed concept. The visuals are rich.
It's the most melancholy animated movie I can remember seeing. And Pixar shows how great they are at character dev and story telling in the wordless montage at the beginning.
As for the short, it was underwhelming for me. I'd rank it 2nd to dead last of the shorts in front of Boundin.

Without spoiling anything, I'm thinking of taking my near-three-year-old daughter to it. Inappropriate? She's scared of fire too, does that come up at all?

What is Up about ? I dont want to read too much about it.
I thought Wall-E was brilliant and their best movie. I will see this in the premiere cause of that unlike their earlier movies.

It isn't inappropriate - the adult themes are more about life and death and aging. There is one scene with fire but it is not a huge part of the film.

A grouchy old man with a heart of gold and a young boyscout are thrown together on an adventure in a house turned into a hot air balloon.

Just saw it this morning and have to agree... By far, Pixar's funniest movie. In the first half hour alone, I had gone from sad crying to crying from laughter. Brilliant.
The short at the start was funny too. It started out a little TOO cute, but then it got funnier (what happens to storks who deliver the babies of the not-so-cute animals of the world). It was also in 3D, so Wannabe - if you didn't get the short - you were gypped. :o(

I *loved* this movie! I've loved everything Pixar's done, however, so perhaps I'm biased.
But I have to say, the opening segment of the movie had tears rolling down my face and any scene that recalled that opened up the waterworks again. Beautiful movie.
I also loved the humor, but remember the emotional stuff much more.

There is fire. Used violently too. It's for a minute or so.
I think a lot of the heavier elements in the movie won't register with kids.

Yeah, this movie was pretty outstanding. I almost even cried at the montage, and that was just in the first 10 minutes. This is one of the most meaningful movies that has come out in a good long while. I just posted my top 25 favorite movies. It's not on there now, but I need a couple days to think about a movie before I decide how well I liked it. This was fantastic though.
As for the three year old niece, I might not take her. There were some two or three year olds behind me, and they seemed a little scarred at times. Mostly because of some menacing dogs. I don't know your niece (or do I :p) but I'd think it through.

Okay, I caught it last night, and I do have to say it was pretty outstanding. It was genuinely funny. I love Dug the talking Dog. He's awesome.

It was such a great movie. I've had male friends admit they got choked up in the beginning, and a few even admitted to letting a tear or two fall.

A very good movie. But on the scale of personal enjoyment, I slip it just ahead of A Bug's Life near the bottom of the Pixar list. Which still puts it in the top 10% of movies in the past 20 years.

Took the boys to see it over the weekend. We gave Nathan the option of not going because he's now decided he's too big for "kid" movies. But he wanted to go.
The movie hit a lot of good notes for me. The non-traditional hero. The kid is a kid and not a super-smart mini-adult. I love the Lost World/Age of Explorers thing (perfect for a pulp fiction geek like me). The opening was heart-rending without being maudlin or sickly sweet. A very strong outing that just didn't have anything that made it stand out from the pack of other Pixar films. But that alone puts it in pretty heady company. And I'd put it in the upper half of Pixar's features.

I've seen lots of comments around the web of people who didn't get the short (as well as people who didn't get the Toy Story 3 teaser -- like me!). We did get to see the short; I can only imagine it's certain theaters that just wanna cram another showtime into the day. Shave off 5-8 minutes of the short, might be able to squeeze one more in? Maybe. Could be too cynical of a reason for it.
I loved the film, warts & all. Very tense & exciting in parts, very funny as well, and very mature in a lot of the themes explored. That opening 10-20 minutes is golden. And even though I guessed the fate of the grape soda cap from the time of the kid's sales pitch to Carl, it was still great to see it finally happen.
I'm not sure where I'd rank it among Pixar's features, but like a lot of people who rank it low admit, even the 'worst' Pixar movie is still a lot better than many other GOOD films of the last 14 years.

I'd have liked it better if I hadn't read the book. As it was...it was a disappointment.

I heard that the opening could make you cry. I was prepared for it.
But dang, the ending made me cry.
I saw the film on Monday (stupid brother-in-law family were too busy until Monday...and then they discover that they are too busy during the week!) and the theater was only half full, and I still missed lines of dialogue due to laughter!
This film is so great that you should see it even if you only get 2-D.

Watched it last night. A pretty good adventure story overall with funny dialogue and neat ideas.
At the same time, the 3D effects didn't do much for me, some of the jokes were overused (e.g., the squirrel joke), and the filmmakers went a little overboard with the sentimentality.
But I'm glad I watched the movie.
Also, I don't think a lesser Pixar film--which might fall into the good, not great category--is better than other good movies from the last several years. Seriously, Cars?

I'm not surprised that this movie is getting positive reviews. I'm taking my 11 year old step-daughter to see it this weekend.

After watching Cars, I'm convinced Pixar could make a film about shoelaces that would entertain me! I still have never watched a NASCAR race...

Excellent movie that was surprisingly deep, had my fiancee crying a few times, usually at the same time something was stuck in my eye.

I watched it last night. Good stuff, not as good as The Incredibles, Wall-E or Finding Nemo, but better than Cars, Toy Story or Monsters Inc.
The montage at the start was definitely the film's highlight for me. It's rare to see cinema to convey so much emotion through mere images with no dialogue.
OTOH, like in pretty much any Pixar movie but The Incredibles and A Bug's Life, the antagonist was the weakest part of the film by far.
Great movie. Would of thought Russell's mum would be a bit more concerned about her son disappearing to South America and coming back with a old guy in a zeppelin!

So, I saw Up recently. I know it's old news to the Americans, but I thought it was really good and deserves discussion.
What did everyone think? Personally, I thought it was very good fun, while also quite powerful (although the 3D really didn't do anything for the film).

The sentimentality was over the top, but it's a decent adventure film. I just wish the villain wasn't as fucking lame.
