I bought the Avengers 40 year dvd rom a few years ago . Did they abandon offering those collections?

Yup, they quit making the DVDs. Now they have an online service with a monthly fee instead:

Yes, they have stopped, unfortunately.

The CDs/DVDs were released through license to GIT, Inc (http://www.gitcorp.com/group.asp?grp=14). Marvel canceled the license as part of their launch of their paid digital reprint subscriptions.

I had picked up the Spider-Man and Fantastic Four collections, and was interested in more. I definitely won't be buying a monthly subscription to Marvel.com, though. Oh, well.

(Ahh, too quick, JK!)

It's a shame. I see them in ebay and judging by the asking prices , it looks like a scarce item. It had its flaws ,however , in that it excluded crossover issues with other titles pertinant to the storylines. It also left out the giantsize issues.

That was especially glaring on the Avengers disc -- left big gaping holes in Englehart's "Avengers vs. Defenders" and "Celestial Madonna" storylines. The X-Men disc does include GS X-Men #1, at least.

If they had continued the DVD-Rom line, it's likely Avengers would have received the "Complete" treatment that improved on the "40 Years Of..." model.

The Complete FF, for instance, added all 4 volumes of the Silver Surfer comic.

I would very much liked to have seen a Complete collection that included all the satellite Spider-Man titles. :frown:

I don't see why Marvel couldn't have continued the DVD-Rom line and their digital comics, but I suppose it's because one of the selling points was the first 100 issues of all their icons were available.

I agree. i have purchased many different formats of Avengers collections. I believe there's a market out there.

I was under the impression they were going to stop licensing their titles were going to start producing DVDs in-house.

But nothing has come of it yet...

I got the original Spider-Man one (the one with only 40 years, not the 44 years one), the Fantastic Four one and the Avengers one. I can still get some of the others at my lcs, but the Hulk and Silver Surfer and other ones didn't really interest me.

And yes, though I would've gotten more most likelty, I am certainly NOT going to subscribe to a 'service' that allows me to view comics, until they disallow them. That's crappy.
