The Show may be terrible. But the GNs are of a better quality. Fleshes out the characters and backstories. A pity that most of them are about characters we rarely see.
They're mostly Canon, I think.
My favourites are "The Death of Hanah Gitelman" and The backstory on The Haitian. Especially the ones by Jason Badower.
What are your picks?
They're all canon. They're mostly written by show staff.
It's funny, I have both hardcovers but I haven't read them yet. From reading online, there was a really cool story about the lives Adam Monroe lived. That was the only one that really stuck out for me.

I was into the show in season 1, and would read the webcomics they put out each week, though i eventually lost track. That's what's collected in the first GN, right?
I remember there was some stuff that really should have made it into the show, like Eden's origin and epilogue. Wireless's story was pretty cool too, but I think she only showed up for one TV scene to help Matt, and without the comic you'd have no idea who she was or why she was there.

Wireless was in the "Five years in the future" episode in Season 1 as well. She was played by Stana Katic (Castle).
The GNs are real fun reads. They're doing the REBEL arc right now. showing the backstory of how Micah became REBEL.
They're not entirely canonical.. for example the Haitian's backstory was mentioned in this thread, and that has him refer to himself as "his father's only son", when a brother was later introduced in the series itself. They could be half brothers, but given that the father had powers, that seems unlikely.

I remember they said in an installment of Behind The Eclipse that Samedi was The Haitian illegitimate brother. Their father, The Houngan from the GNs liked to sleep around with the local women.
The Haitian's backstory is canon but "The Ten Brides of Kensai" is not. Apparently it was just a placeholder story for Season 2.
