If it were Monday rather than Thursday, I would have just sent this to Grant privately. As his next column isn't for another week, and this is a subject he has brought up numerous times, I figure I'd link to this article (John Dvorak on the RIAA, for those who didn't read the subject) here:

Torrents are about the only way I have to sample new music...especially in traditionally underplayed genres (metal, etc).
I like buying music, but there is so much drek out there that I will never again buy a CD before hearing it.
But I understand why the industry doesn't want us to hear the whole CD before buying it... that undermines the whole "single release" approach. They've made a killing getting us to buy whole albums/CDs based on our liking the single we heard on the radio. If we'd heard the whole thing, much of the time we'd have passed on the album/CD and just got the .45 or CD single.
