Cherokee Jack alerted me to this site featuring the comic strip art of Mel Keefer. He drew the Mac Divot strip for 22 years and worked on many others such as Dragnet and Perry Mason.
I wasn't aware of his work til today, but I am now a big fan of his art.

I can see why. Love that image of the high flying tank from the Toby comic. Thanks to you and CJ.

I worked with Mel when we were both at Hanna-Barbera doing presentation art for new show pitches. What a talent! I ran into Mel at the SDCCI a few years ago and he was doing great and delighted to have a dealer friend of mine ask him to sign a bunch of war comic stories he drew decades earlier.
Another overlooked-but-amazing ex-funnybook cartoonist who worked at HB was Tony Sgroi. He's probably no longer alive, but when I was producing THE COMPLETELY MENTAL MISADVENTURES OF ED GRIMLEY, Tony was my go-to guy for celebrity caricatures...which he could do sheerly by memory!
Aloha,
Scott!

I knew not of Mr. Keefer until seeing a great film the other night, HOW TO MURDER YOUR WIFE. Jack Lemmon is a cartoonist in it, and Mr. Keefer drew the strips used in the film.
I understand Alex Toth also drew some promo strips for this film. A user at IMDB credits Kurt Schaffenberger as doing the films' strips, but I have no idea how they came up with that info.
That's where I heard of Keefer first as well--And Toth's promo strips for it are great.
I was just reading the Toth bio (from '65) in Creepy or Eerie archives and Keefer is one of the artists he mentions as a favorite.

I was wondering who did those... as it so happens, they were showing that film on the "this" channel last night in my area.

Yeah, I've been watching that channel for the last few days now... they've been kinda having a mini blaxploitation film festival. Last night they had Friday Foster and I think Cotton Comes to Harlem... and over the weekend they had Slaughter and Slaughter's Big Rip-Off, back-to-back.
