Julio Esteban Richter is the former mutant known as Rictor. No longer able to release seismic energy through his fingertips, he is still proving his worth as a member of X-Factor Investigations.

Rictor had a great mutant power, but I like seeing him proving time and again that he was more than just his powers. I say keep him powerless for now. I'd like to see them come back some time. It would be interesting to see how he would adjust to that.

He should not have powers. It's good that they kept him still cool with 0 powers.

My introduction to Rictor was from when he was hanging out with Weapon P.R.I.M.E. All I remember was that he was looking rather hideous in his costume.
What do you think his worst look was? I don't know if I could choose one. He has had quite a few bad fashion choices. It is images like this (http://media.comicvine.com/uploads/2/24656/433213-rictor_super.jpg) that made it hard for me to like him at first.

Love the character. Got into him in the first issue of X-Factor and he's been a big favorite of mine ever since. I'm digging him without the powers. I feel it brings great character moments for him and good plot points. I also love seeing the only human in the book in action and playing a big role at certain times.
I like Rictor. I think of him like the coach or manager of a team, who used to play but can not anymore. So he helps the team in other ways.
But I have only known the character without powers. Would he be as interesting if he were to be powered? For the character it is his greatest wish I think.. but he seems OK without powers so I would prefer to see him stay that way as member of X-Factor.

I don't think he's truly okay without them. The guy is really disturbed and unstable. He's depressed all the time and seems like a character who's literally breaking apart, very slowly. I recall a time when I felt the way he did and I feel that's one reason I gravitated to him most when the series started.

I mean, as afiction character he is still very interesting without powers. But I know his greatest wish, even above love, is probably for his powers returned to him

I'd be curious to see how he would react to the return of his powers. He has proven himself an asset to the team, but if his powers were to return would he view himself only in terms of his powers again? That's the question i think should be explored if his powers return.
It seems that no matter how much he has done without any powers he still struggles with his place on the team. It can't be easy working around people who still have their powers. Especially ones who he has worked with in the past as a mutant. It wasn't that long ago that he was working with Siryn and M in X-Corporation

He was able to gain powers again for a short bit when Quicksilver was a regular in the book trying to repower ex-mutants. I loved the sub-plot with the two hanging out. Then he was the one who sorta "defeated" the Isolationist when he had the terrigan crystals on his back.

I'm okay with keeping him a bit unhappy for now. I just hope it doesn't become a one man "woe is me" routine.
I agree that he needs a love interest. I would have said pair him with Siryn, but we don't really need EVERYONE on the team sleeping with each other.

My recollection is a bit hazy, but did he have his old powers back or just new powers? I wonder if it would make a difference to him either way.

It was his old power. He created slight tremors and was able to use his rock controlling powers to take the crystals out of Quicksilver's body.

Well, he's pretty much been "woe is me" since the first issue.
I liked the small thing he had with Rahne and how it affected him when she left. Damn, that got me so much. :frown: I also wished PAD had written that thing with Rictor and one of Jamie's dupes. We'll see where this Shatterstar thing goes.

I was so bummed that Ric was a member of X-Force in the beginning, but he didn't stay away too long. And I loved the costume Tabitha designed for Ric when they were staying at the X-Mansion for awhile...I hope he gets his powers back and joins the new New Mutants series :)

OMG....Yes Rictor should get his powers back.
I wish he would get some better spotlight. My fave character of all :D.
I have always loved how he seems to be styled to keep current with the times.
Back in the day when he first appeared he had the whole punk mohawk look, then the terrible mullet (but then again what character didnt have the mullet back in the day). Then he had the long rocker hair, now he has the cool surfer dude hair.
Personally I've always liked him paired with Rhane, they go so well together (well he went pretty well with Taby as well). I hated that she left so quickly after they hooked back up after soooooooooooooo long.

it's weird. He first appeared as a victim of the Right. and he hated his powers. and now he's lost them and before X-Factor devolved into the Madrox show, he got a nice interesting spotlight. I dunno if I want him to get his powers back or not. I think eventually he should get them back, but not right away. I would love to see him chase Rahne onto the New Mutants.

I dont know if I want Rictor powered or not. I've never read him with powers. And he's certainly interesting without them. But at the same time... I'd like to see what he can do with his powers. And I'd like to see what his personality is like with powers. And of course, I wish I had super powers, so I empathize with his desire to have them as well.
Here are a few Rictor avatars that I made:

I actually like Ric as the everyday man more than Jamie these days, even though him possibly being suicidal kinda bugs me.
I do want to see him get his powers back because they're fun and relatively unique powers and I like do like a bit of flash every now and then.

I hate how we never got a glimpse of how Rictor's powers really worked. We only got a glimpse of the scale of his powers and what they meant to him only after he lost them. That scene in the first(?) issue of X-Factor was really fantastic. He never really talked about his mutant powers like that before. It was a nice insight we had never seen before.

He's actually been suicidal since he was a kid. It's been a bit of an ongoing thing with him over the years, it's just gotten way worse since he lost his powers. :frown:
Personally, I would like to see him rocking the place again. I have all of his X-Factor Vol 1, New Mutants, and X-Force appearances, and I loved him so much with his powers. He is interesting without them, yeah, but it's also sad to see him so broken without them.

These two quotes reminded me of a story in Y The Last Man and I think Rictor needs a visit from Agent 711 to help him address his suicidal tendencies and his issues of discontent.

RICTER Julio Esteban!
Man, usually I am one for characters staying pretty static as characters and just being worked on over and over chiseling them, tweaking and redefining over and over with stories and exterior changes and predicaments being the catalyst for new material/stories.
Rictor has such a cool and interesting progression. I liked each stage as well, but am pretty happy where he is now as a character and really can't wait to see what's ahead. I am pretty okay with him not having powers. Unlike most other characters, losing powers hasn't detracted any story potential or stopped him being used. One day though... would be nice. I liked his powers and how he used them. Plus I felt pretty bad when he was explaining his connection to the Earth.

I just want to see him get his powers back at some point to see where PAD goes with them. As a power set, there's alotyou can do with them.
Rictors one of the lucky ones. Because he's more of a background charcter, outside of a few mistakes, he has a pretty decent and simple-ish history, no-ones really messed his character up in any way.

I have a soft spot for the above costume, though its kind of a mess. I have a general fondness for all of Greg Capullo's designs because they fit the "in your face" tone of the team at the time (the above cover is by Tony Daniel, art on right is Capullo))

I agree with what you say about the top two images. lol at the last one. In a way... eh, I kind of like it. I think it depends more on the artist. I mean Rictor is a bit more solid now, but I think that look done by the writer artist could make that outfit really work. Maybe only change the style of the vest/jacket the cut and color? (or more likely I have no style at ALL)

lol Awh, not that weird. I mean, would still probably be a lot more grounded pose wise, I still see him using his hands together though? Like uhm. A way to concentrate?
I think thats one of the reasons thrown out for why Jean and Emma always make weird hand and arm poses when they use their telepathy (like they shoot out their finger tips like lightning? lol) or its supposedly one of the reasons... i forget... they could just be very dramatic!
I agree again. In fact it echoes what I was trying to say in my first post I made with Rictor. For who he is now, I really like/prefer his look, and well everything about him. Even though if I think I liked earlier looks better visually.

I have to agree with hoping that he EVENTUALLY regains his powers while under the pen of PAD. Even when revealing the loss of his powers, PAD managed to add a whole new dimension to them at the same time. So I imagine that he could find creative new uses and dimensions to Rictor's extremely flexible powers.
On the other hand, Rictor has shined as a Depowered character. Even without powers, he's managed to hold his own and become a valuable member of the team. Few other Depowered characters have been able to do that, at least without resorting to technology or tricks. Giving him back his powers might take away his Badass Normal cred.
But again! I would love to see the unique spin PAD could bring to his powers. Very rarely have we seen him use them beyond "smash, blast, vibrate into pieces", when there's been clear potential for him to use them for other things. Remember back in the New Mutants, when he freed the team from Hela's enchanted chains? Breaking the metal down on the molecular level, when Sunspot's strength couldn't do anything? That was pretty impressive, and a very subtle feat that required amazing finesse.

I agree. Two characters I think have benefitted and really only two characters for me, are Rictor and Dani.
I really really do wish for them to be repowered eventually, but yeah, another cool chapter to add to his file. More top aid and abet in his characterization.
Mmmn, definitely, if there is one thing I like about X-Factor (and a few other books like Legacy) is its application of characters powers.

A very nice alternate version of Rictor in uniform.

I wonder... can we turn this into a Rictor and Shatterstar Appreciation thread?

I'd be down for that.
First and foremost, time to celebrate Rictor and Shatterstar's relationship earning X-Factor the GLAAD award for Outstanding Comic Book.

I like Rictor, but the only time he didn't look like he smelled like canned tuna was under Sook.
He needs to bag it up with Daken, hag it up with Boom Boom, and wear something he didn't find at Sport's Authority.

Interesting who would be his hag... Boom Boom or Wolfsbane?

Tabitha would be a lot more fun to hang out with. Rhane would have too many issues.

What say you guys? How do you feel about it?
SPOILER Repowered and permanent.

Good! He's been the 'heart' of the team for awhile. It'll be nice to see him in a more active role for a change.

PAD confirmed it. After this current arc ends, it'll be addressed. It's status quo now. :frown:

I wonder why PAD said Rictor getting his powers back will affect his relationship with Shatterstar. I don't see how those two things influence each other...

Shatterstar obviously only likes Rictor when he's human. He doesn't like things being... shaken up.

I shall wait and see. Love how PAD writes relationships and interactions. Though I like Rictor as depowered, but whatever. Though I wonder... maybe now he'll be more sure of himself, more confident. Thus changing some of the dynamic between him and Shatterstar. Shatterstar is the confident, impulsive one between the two. What if Rictor getting his powers now switches the roles of who's the "dominant" one in the relationship, maybe it'll get Shatterstar uncomfortable?

Shame this couldn't have happened for him actually in X-Factor as it is a huge development for one of PAD's guys but I am glad to see it. It will be interesting to see how Rictor reacts, I wonder if we'll see a swing where he is now over-confident, (maybe even to the point of trying to usurp Jamie's position... Jamie might not even object to that).

I'm sure PAD will do something. Layla is still connected to the whole House of M/M-Day situation. Plus Rictors now involvement in this. Not to mention his frequant use of Quicksilver. Hopefully he will sort of sum this up in his own book and have his own connected arc to help fill in continuity.

I feel like Rictor has always had a bit of an attitude and being depowered gave reasoning to it. He felt so broken after losing his powers and the only way he felt whole was through his relationship with Shatterstar. So it will be interesting to see how his relationship to Star changes based on potentially feeling whole on his own.

No. I don't think that's going to be a factor.
