View Full Version : Songs that weren't singles but are still really good

What with me downloading music these days instead of buying whole albums, I'm sure that I'm missing out. For example, I have downloaded "Hammerhead" and "You're Gonna Go Far, Kid" by The Offspring, but if I bought the whole album there'd probably be at least a few other tracks I thought were just as good. I might never hear those, though.

So I thought that a thread linking to those kinds of songs might be a good thing and people might find something they'll enjoy which they'd otherwise be unaware of.

Here are a couple that I like:

Riot - Wyclef Jean with Serj Tankian and Sizzla (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dCGS1kJ2Sng)

Jimmy James - Beastie Boys (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LIKsqWkwJ_A)

Stairway to Heaven was never a single. It's estimated that it added over 600,000 buys of the 4th Led Zeppelin album.

I got that cd for my birthday. I like pretty much the entire first half of the cd, though You're Gonna Go Far, Kid" is still my favorite.

There's been more than a few B sides that was the reason a single sold well.

I always though 'The Prophet's Song' on Queen's 'A Night at the Opera' album was almost as good as 'Bohemian Rhapsody.'

I won't list the majority of underground acts I listen to, since the majority of them don't release many singles, if any at all.........And I'm not listing any b-sides or songs from ep's, as the OP made the thread in reference to good songs on full-length albums which weren't released as singles.

"Ziggy Stardust" by David Bowie

You really need to listen to the whole of The Rise And Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars to get the full experience.

But then you also need to know that the riff at the start of the chorus of Starman was the intro to a BBC news program.

You don't need to know that I have the whole of FIve Years memorised.

I much prefer Forbidden Love from Bedtime Stories/Something to Remember.

You really need to listen to the whole of The Rise And Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars to get the full experience.

I am a massive Bowie fan. Honestly, most of my favorite Bowie songs were never singles. But I think that's one of the best things about his career. He makes great songs, catchy and very popular singles, and they're great. But then you get the albums and it's just like.....WOW. I mean, the entire Hunky Dory album still blows me away. I've been collecting Bowie albums on vinyl since I was very young, and he still holds the spot of one of my favorite artists.

Most of Alanis Morissette's best songs never end up released as singles. The One from Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie. A Man and You Owe Me Nothing in Return from Under Rug Swept. Straitjacket, Moratorium, 20/20, Break, and Madness from Flavors of Entanglement (and related recording times).

True, but it's pretty fascinating that one of the best and most iconic tracks on the album was never released as a single even though other tracks were released as singles before and after the album came out. "Soul Love" was a B-side; "Moonage Daydream" was released as a single credited to a different name (with "Hang On to Yourself" as the B-side); "Starman," "Suffragette City," and "Rock 'n' Roll Suicide" were all singles as well.

EDIT:
Ahh, damn. My mistake. "Ziggy Stardust" was the B-side on some versions of the "Jean Genie" single.

Do B-sides count?

Should've answered this earlier. I know lots of songs from the album are released as B-sides, but I don't see any reason to limit it to just stuff on full-length albums. Long as you're confident in its quality, list it!

I always thought "Tell Me Why" and "You Can't Do That" should have been much bigger early hits for the beatles.

Word. It was actually my favorite Kanye song until I got into all of his singles ("Slow Jamz," "Flashing Lights," etc.). Dude rips, though.

As for Beatles, was "Good Night" a single? That's probably my favorite by them.

So many Beatles album tracks could be nominated here. A few of my favourites -

Any Time At All
What You're Doing
You Won't See Me
For No One
In My Life
And Your Bird Can Sing
too many to name from The White Album
side two of Abbey Road
