Reading War Machine #5, where he anoints James Rhodes as his God of War in training(or his equivalent) got me thinking..would he also consider Frank Castle as his champion?

Castle's a homicidal maniac, and a mere mortal, with no superpowers.
Ares would consider him inferior not only to him, but most likely to other superhumans as well.

I think it could work. Id love a buddy book with Moon Knight and Punisher with Khonshu and Ares constantly trying to prove their champion is better.

That would actually work...I would definetly buy that book. I don't know if Ares would consider the Punisher his champion though with people like War Machine and Wolverine around. I always thought since Ares was brought back that it would be fun for him to try to turn Wolverine into his champion...to try to turn him into his weapon. I thought that was interesting, especially considering the Romulus ties to Ares in Greek Myth. There's something interesting there that could be played with. I think the Punisher is more of Khonshu's style.

Hasn't it been said in more than one place that Frank is Death's champion?
I could be misremembering.

They made it pretty clear in Born that he's working for Death/Satan, although there wasn't really any hint of straight evil in the captions, so I've always taken it as Frank talking to the reaper. But really, the last time he was an agent of anybody, he was hunting demons with ghost guns. Do we want that? Although, a one-shot or two issue story where Frank is near-death after a particularly rough night, with Death, Khonshu, etc., all the people he could become avatars/servants for fighting over who gets him could be interesting.

there should be an Ares/Punisher teamup, no doubt..

If a Greek god is going to be fond of Frank, I'd say it's more likely to be Nemesis than Ares.
But, yeah, a Punisher/Ares fight-slash-teamup could be fun.

Thankfully, everybody has ignored that as the horrible idea it is.

I liked the mini-series, but the idea that he would keep going with his killing infatuation, even after he was told it would cost him his family, was ridiculous.

Ennis was careful to keep the exact nature of the black-background-white-text voice vague. One reading is that it's death (or Death, if you prefer), and that Frank's survival/killing spree at Valley Forge is the result of supernatural intervention. Another is that it's Frank's dark side, and that Frank's survival/killing spree is the result of him (finally) fully embracing that side of himself. Both are equally valid, as far as the text goes.

It's not until he gets home that he realizes it may be his family.

It has been reiterated in Moon Knight.
Not saying that makes it good just that it's not forgotten.

I don't think so. Ares would probably consider him, but Frank would never be loyal to him. He might be homicidal but he has lines he simply wont cross and he would need to for the job. Not to mention that he only takes missions for others if their is something in return, like in Mother Russia, where he only did it for the passwords on every criminal database and to make sure that the little girl carrying the virus is safe.

That and the voice inside his head told him that he would not remember it (The voice I mean).

Khonshu told Moon Knight that Castle was spoken for already. While he said this we had a closeup on the skull symbol on Frank's chest.

I could see Ares picking Frank as his champion more than War Machine, actually. One thing Ennis drove home beautifully (even though is MAX run isn't 616 continuity) is that Castle is a SOLDIER, not just a killing machine. He really played up on Frank's military background and training. Rhodey was also a soldier, but I don't think it's as much a part of his identity as it is for Castle. Plus, Rhodey isn't a killer at heart. Castle is. And I think the fact that Castle is just a human without any fancy powers or weapons wouldn't deter Ares. It may impress him even more, that a man could do what Castle does without any superpowered help.

Naaaaaw...Mainly because Frank works on such a small scale. Think about it... The champion of War is a merc who only kills bad guys. Ares kills anything, including children. You would have to be a villain or some sort of monster to be his champion.
