View Full Version : What should Rachel's code name be?

Uncle Nobs
05-06-2009, 11:44 PM
She's been known by several names & titles:

Rachel Anne Summers, Rachel Grey, Phoenix, Marvel Girl, Mother Askani, Bright Lady, Alyzr'n Summerset, White Warrior Princess, Hound, The Celestial Avatar, The Cosmic Avatar, R'Chell  , Starchild(e), Executioner, Scrapper...

Her most recent change was to call herself Rachel Grey/Marvel Girl after her dad pissed her off, her mom croaked, and her family was slaughtered (which, come to think of it, didn't provoke much of a response).

Assuming she remains an active member of a current X-team after War of Kings, what code name would you like her to use?

LOL, I'd love for it to be R'Chel!

But on a more serious note, I think Starchild(e) or Askani (minus the "Mother") would be the best.

You speak the truth. She's been brainwashed WAY more times than Jean has died.

Uncle Nobs

I voted for Starchild.

It's time she stepped into the limelight with a prominent place on a prominent X-team.

Define her powers a little better (Phoenix Force: yes/no? Time-travel: to what extent?), make them distinct. Give her a costume that plays on her history and doesn't scream B-list. Give her a name that does the same.

Askani has possibilities, too. I just don't have much interest in revisiting that whole world and all the baggage that goes with it.

Uncle Nobs

You speak the truth. She's been brainwashed WAY more times than Jean has died.
Death-prone = quitter, drama queen, necessitates overblown stories with predictable outcomes.

Brainwashing-prone = sympathetic, allows open-ended storytelling.

She's one big raw nerve, susceptible to emotional upheavals, never really able to put her past behind her and find lasting peace.

Sorry, Jean. You still make a mean asparagus flambe.

If she's named Starchild then she needs to be in deep space or at least on the fringe of earth's solar system.

I still think restoring the mutant race and relocating the majority of them to a brand new planet on the edge of the Shi'ar empire would work wonders. Or maybe that planet filled with alien mutants that X-Factor visited years ago.

If they don't restore the mutant race then call her Askani and let her use her time manipulating powers to travel the multiverse collecting the remnants of the mutant race from all the other timelines in order to give them a new chance to thrive elsewhere. Could bring her into conflict with the Exiles for messing with timelines.

I like 'Starchilde' as one of Rachel's nicknames, but I don't prefer it as a superhero codename for her. To me, it's similar to how they call Storm the 'Wind-Rider', and Illyana the 'Darkchylde'.

I was thinking about codenames for Rachel a while back, but that was before the events of Kingbreaker 4, so the names I came up with were very much lodged in the cosmic. I thought 'Corona' might fit her; it's not only the outer layer of the sun's atmosphere, it also means 'crown'. Or maybe 'Blazar' to follow up on Quasar and Pulsar.

I thought the name 'Flux' would describe both her personality and her very existence as a time/space-displaced entity, but it doesn't have a nice 'ring', and there is already a Hulk villain called Flux.

I also think that one could have the same objection against 'Marvel Girl' as Dungeonmaster Jim has against 'Starchild'. 'Girl' doesn't sound mature enough. 'Marvel Woman' would not be an improvement.

I don't mind Phoenix if she has access to those powers, and Askani could be a nice nod to the chapter of her past that was undone. It would mean something for her if she took her own name; Phyla-Vell renounced the legacy names 'Captain Marvel' and 'Quasar', too, though there was also some insecurity and self-doubt involved there.

She still does, sadly. Just goes to show you'll always regret getting a big tattoo of someone or something you'll be separated from later.

Maybe she and Korvus could take a joint codename and call themselves the Twin Phalluses (Phalli?).
When did Rachel get her hound tattoos back? They re-emerged on her face when the 'echo' of the Phoenix Force inexplicably left her body in Kingbreaker 4.

EDIT: Wow, that means she's tattoo girl now. People always wonder about how most of the X-Men don't have any tats, but Ray's covered in them at this point.

Self hate is second nature for Laura. Plus she's genetically Rachel's aunt, Weapon X was the forerunner to the Hound Program, temporary roomates, there's a multitude of connections here.

It's R'Chel's pattern to latch onto far more popular characters to promote herself, so I see this as a reasonable line of thought.

Not to mention better taste in costumes, in spite of Oracle only having 1-2 variations of hers.

True. Although that naked savage look she was sporting in New X-Men was a hot mess.

I don't recall Rachel being in any variation of New X-men

Wouldn't she be better without a codename?

Just because, her surnames happen to make it clear that she is the daughter of both Scott Summers and Jean Grey. Surely that's more imposing to an opponent then having a codename?

No. The "Grey" name implies constant death. The "Summers" name implies throwaway clones and an unhealthy Mr. Sinister obsession. Furthermore, superheroes without codenames are like cats who don't "haz a cheeseburger." Not compelling!

"GasChilde"

The superfluous "e" at the end of "Childe" gives it a touch of bloated regal class. Love.

Wonderful suggestion, Swash, and brilliant observation, Torpor!

I fear the endless beer references with Corona.I doubt that she would mind. It could become her 'signature' drink of choice, like James Bond's shaken Martini. She just has to hope that Corona 'ships' intergalactically if she visits bars in Shi'ar space.

...Boobs McSlavey?

Cosmic Ray?

X-Ray?

What? Shut up now?
Please don't.

Mourning Star?

Red Dwarf?

...Milky Ray?

Her code name would depend primarily on where she would go after War Of Kings. If she stays in space, we may assume that there will still be a Shi'ar Empire for the Starjammers to oppose, so Rachel would want a name that strikes fear into the hearts of the Shi'ar soldiers. I suppose Phoenix would do nicely. The firebird has been Ray's symbol for 20-plus years of her superhero history almost non-stop, so who's to say she'll be Phoenix-less for long.

If she goes to Earth after WoK (which I'd prefer), she'd want something different, but that might depend on which position she'd take in the current dynamics of the mutant population. Whether she joins a team of bright, optimistic heroes, or a darker outfit, for example.

But I think neither 'Phoenix' nor 'Marvel Girl' describes a telepath/telekinetic of her caliber very well.
I like Starchilde or Raptor, personally.
I would like Raptor a lot, despite the dinosaur associations that could be made.

Very funny!

The Morning/Mourning Star really has a good potential to me though.

If we really need to the keep the Bird of Fire idea; FLAMINGO, or FLAMING-HO.

She could take atfer her biological dad (Rachel Howlett) or step-mom (Rachel Frost)!

Or she could take Kitty's name after they return to San Fran and get gay married. Kitty and Rachel Pryde has a nice ring to it...
