Cable (vol. 3) #14
"Messiah War"- Part Four of Seven
The ticking clock really starts to come into play now, as the X-Force crew has a little over eight hours to recover Hope and Cable, and return home.
Yeah, they gotta get on the stick.
They split up into two groups, Cable, Wolverine, and Elixir march straight for the Citadel, trying to fight their way in the front door to rescue Hope. (Big macho wounding and healing action, there, in between lots of dead Stryfe goons). Domino's squad, which features X-23, Vanisher, and future-Deadpool, is going to figure out what's preventing X-Force from returning home... some sort of time-travel blocker. Sadly, Deadpool decides to wait a whole two hours before he lets on to what he knows... the blocker isn't a thing in a place... it's a person. (good money on who that is? I'll give you a hint...Austrailian Aborigine).
Our big plot segue, is the "lost" X-Force member, Archangel. Future Apocalypse has called his Horseman back to serve him, and Warren says, "Request denied!" (paraphrasing), leaving him there to rot. A good moment of triumph, amongst the bleakness. Warren's still a wild card in this saga, it'll be interesting to see how he plays back in.
Stryfe has Hope as his prisoner in a TK bubble, and he's got Warpath bound in a machine designed to inflict the most painful torture thirtieth century money can buy. And while James is doing his best to keep the evil clone of Cable distracted, so he doesn't learn who Hope is... he might just be delaying the inevitable.
Because Bishop is nearby, waiting for the right moment to step in and blow Hope's little head off. TENSION. Plenty of Tension. The whole scene inside the citadel plays out like a Mexican standoff... excellent writing here. Bishop extends his hand, trying to weaken Stryfe, and take down the girl... only to be foiled. And then, after he's got his traitorous ally, Stryfe deactivates his psi-blocker...
And once Stryfe knows who Hope is... he takes off his helmet, to do something really, really evil... pretend he's her adopted father, there to rescue her.
Stryfe... you bastard.
Oh.... and the clock's now at 4.1 hours remaining.
Tick... tick... tick...

This was a really good issue, but it does follow the trend of each Cable chapter being considerably slower than the X-Force ones.

Agreed there. Even if four hours of their time go by... it seems like there's more of a buildup to what will happen, than what did. But slowing it here, it makes more sense than it did in parts one and two.

Seems like four. Wherever Dom's crew went, it took two to get there. Logan and Cable are outside the Citadel with Elixir fighting at T minus 4.6 hours. But four full hours pass from page one to the end.

Stryfe really is a son of a bitch, isn't he? I mean most villains have some redeeming feature. Even Apocalypse, in his own thoroughly warped way, wants to make a better world for Mutants. But Stryfe is just a self interested little creep who wants to make everyone as miserable as he is.
Big surprise that Bishop bit off more than he can chew. Who didn't see that one coming?

This issue was awesome and Stryfe was sinister at the end, which makes me wonder if he is responsible for the hell Hope brought to Bishop's future. I think i've overlooked this "time-trap" obstacle and what it means. Anyone care to explain it to me quickly?

No, but in there specifically at the request of Nyssane, and allowed, as she was a member of the X-satellite team of sometimes foes/sometimes allies known as the six-pack.
Deadpool, Deathstrike, Moira MacTaggart, and Donald Pierce are among the other non-mutant X-characters in there, who are included in it, with an asterisk next to their name.

My friend, had it not been for my Internet going screwy, I totally would've made a crack about how this is the closest Wolvie will ever get to have his own LOTR.
Let's look at a few... similarities:
Mount Doom = Stryfe's Big-A$$ Fortress Thingy
Sauron = Stryfe
Saruman = Bishop
Elrond = Cyke
Ring = Hope
Ringbearer = Cable
Fellowship = Wolvie, X-23, Warpath, Warren, Dom, Elixir, Vanisher, Cable, Hope, Deadpool
Gollum = Deadpool
Sure, they couldn't quite fit in a Gandal-esque figure and the math ain't perfect, but it's pretty freakin close, lol. You just *know* Craig & Kyle totally had a LOTR marathon last year.

Hope will end up being a racist. She hasn't been exposed to any black people who are not trying to kill her since she was conceived.
pretend he's her adopted father, there to rescue her.
Who didn't see that one coming from a mile away when Stryfe was first mentioned? It's a good storyline but the second Stryfe was mentioned I thought:"Ah is that how Hope turns evil". I'm kinda expecting Hope to stay in the future and Apocalypse somehow being the mutant savior in the end or at least saving Hope from Stryfe :p. Last we saw En Sabah Nur he was captured by a Celestial and ordered to do something for them. And with the Celestials being the creators of mutantkind I'd say they have a vested interest in seeing the race restored. And now the next time we see him he appears deadsmack in the middle of a temporal crossroad that will decide Hope's future (and along with it mutantkind).
Oh... and Sadly... Warpath is going to die.
Given that his older brother was recently dug up and turned zombie I'm kinda thinking he'll replace his little brother after being purged from the T/O virus.

I was hoping that Hope would use her powers to stop Bishop's bullets (we all know she is going to have Tk at least) i think some of the colors are a bit drab too especially in the Archangel part where everything is painted a shiney metallic grey.

Agreed, his charade can only go so far, Nate knows far more about Hope and will easily convince her that he is who he claims.
I was intrigued by the Apocalypse/Archangel section. En Sabah Nur seems to be on his last legs, Warren is doing a re-run of the end of X-Cutioners Song and then Apocalypse grabs him.
I think that Apocalypse is transferring his essence into Archangel. He said that he didn't want Angel to kill him. Makes sense too as Angel's wings were re-made by Apocalypse. Could he be the perfect vessel?

Correct me if I'm wrong because I haven't read a book with stryfe in it since the early 90's, but isn't he supposed to be a non-TO infected Cable? So all Hope/Jean has to do is see that he doesnt have a metal arm and know something is up. Just got my ish. It was.... alright. I just feel like a few things were off.
-Cable is an idiot. Honestly. "We storm the citadel, and get Hope back!" How the hell has he not killed her yet, thinking the way he does?
-Why does everyone (Cable, Stryfe, Warpath) call Hope "Little one"? I understand Cable, but Warpath? Seemed a bit weird to me.
-The timing was odd. For over an hour, Wolverine and Co stood at the cliff and just talked, only to decide "we'll split up". Also, Apocalypse was just... touching Archangel's face for 2 hours and 12 minutes. That was a bit odd. And 3 hours and 48 minutes passed from when we first saw Stryfe torturing Warpath, to when he "rescued her from her false father". We only saw a few minutes worth of action, but it took almost 4 hours.
-Why did Archangel have so many issues last ish, but here, he was just Warren? He could barely think last issue when he felt Apocalypse, to the point where he abandoned his team in the middle of a battle. But here he was just talking to him, like nothing was up.
-Hope is an idiot? She never left the room when she was released from Stryfe's telekinetic bubble. But she still thought it was Cable. She watched him torture Warpath, and stare at her for over three hours, and then randomly, she believes he is Cable? Yes, I get that they look identical, but how could she possibly think that it was Cable? This guy blasted X-Force away and kidnapped her. How could he all of a sudden be Nathan, there to rescue her?
-I really hate Olivetti's art. I know some people love it, but its just not for me. Everything is just too stiff. They all look like statues to me.
I am very excited to see how the story goes on, but I just wasn't feeling this chapter too much.

Stryfe now knows who Hope is (wish he would share it with us). With the progressing of her age in the book, she should be coming into her own powers soon. At first, I wasn't sure if it was her own powers that broke Stryfe's hold on her or Bishop's nanites, but it turned out to be Bishop. Also, not sure who this person with the "time shield" is.

Dont we already know who Hope is? She's a mutant girl, who may either save the mutant race, or doom it. We dont know what her powers are, or when she'll either save or destroy the world, but I mean, neither does she, ya know? Stryfe knows what Bishop thinks, but he also knows what Warpath thinks. So he's just waiting, just like we are.
Cable has always said that being from his time, he knows more about her and the lasting impact she has than Bishop does. Maybe Stryfe has the same info since he's from the same time, originally.

In short, we don't know. Stryfe knows what Bishop knows. And Bishop knows enough (because he's from the future) to know exactly who she is and what powers she has, and how she eventually causes the deaths of "a million humans". All things we don't know. Biship knows enough to know that if he even thinks her name, Stryfe would know who she was. All a little too late for him now.

Stryfe could know what Cable knows about Hope too. He knows from Bishop that she's the mutant messiah and is being protected by Cable. He might want to his normal routine of trying to hurt anyone close to Cable. Or, that information might have clued Stryfe in on why Cable is protecting Hope.
