View Full Version : If your Favourite X Character was killed off, how would it affect you?

Dead rarely means dead nowadays, but some characters have been gone a long time.
Banshee, Synch and Skin - it seems unlikely that these guys are ever going to get resurrected any time soon.
Other characters such as Cypher, although dead for ages, could concievably be brought back if required , much like Colossus was.
Jean Grey - will always either be back, or on the verge of being brought back.

So try and imagine if Marvel decided to kill off your favourite X Character; How would you feel? Would you not mind so long as the story was good? Would you drop the book? Wait for their return? Start an internet campaign? Would it be upsetting to you like you had lost a friend, or would you shrug it off as a piece of fiction?

I guess it depends entirely on how they go out.

Seeing Peepers die, as just another mutant to illustrate that "Predator X be hungry fo' mutants, yo!" that was heartbreaking.

Had he made one last sacrifice, such as he died of wounds given to him when he shivved the guy trying to kill Beast while he was unconscious in a prison infirmary? That'd have been epic. Something more like that. If they've got to go out, do it in a flourish of honor.

I have an idea for you, JAU. Why don't you try to imagine what it would be like if someone murdered your best friend right in front of your eyes?

How do you think this would make a real fan feel?

The only natural response is to find someone to blame and get vengeance.

There is no level of 'good story' that would make up for killing off my favorite.

Ok wait... WBE Peepers is actually your favourite character? wow.

Good point about Limbo Shyft. Who are you talking about?

Iceman. I know he isn't NEARLY as limbo'd as alot of other peoples favourite characters, but the fact that a writer will bring him in for a couple of arcs, criminally under-use him, then boot him again is pretty painful. Even worse is the likes of Carey who brings him in, makes him AWESOME, and then boots him anyway! Its a deep burn on my icy heart.

Not really. He's my favorite D-Lister, for sure, though.

But the principle is still there. I mean, when Colossus died from the Legacy Virus, fans weren't outraged, were they? Because it was a noble martyr's death, done for the love of his sister who succumbed to the disease.

Probably one of the better written deaths in X-history.

What? You don't just tell someone to get a new mother when theirs dies. Or to go find a new God when they're old enough to realize the bible is fake. That sort of suggestion might work on certain other forums where they do not know the meaning of 'real fan,' but I will throw it back in your face.

Of course I wouldn't quit in disgust. My threats are extremely effective. I would expect my favorite to return immediately.

I was pretty bummed when Rachel was first written out of Uncanny. She's always been my favorite character. The other X-Men were still cool but it wasn't quite the same. Then Excalibur started up and I was quite happy. Hound-loveliness! But I knew Rachel's days were numbered with Jean around and all the phoenix crap that started at that point. I wasn't so busted up anymore when Rachel got the boot. And I sort of looked forward to it after the debacle CC made her into on his last Uncanny run.

If Iceman went out anything like he did in AoA, I'd have to mercilessly stab the writer that disrespected Mike Carey's character, then carve his name on their forehead.

I don't really care. But it sucks some are allowed back and some aren't for w/e reason. As for lessening the impact of a story. If the story is over 4 years old, those readers should have moved on already or accept the revolving doors of an infinite comic series.

I was gutted when Mimic was killed off in Exiles, however I lived in the hope that his 616 counterpart would eventually be used.

Now I have Dark X-Men coming up in July.

I’m actually not sure I’d mind.

Iceman is ridiculously easy to bring back and, after they way they’ve botched his character lately, anyone killing off Beak (or whatever they’re calling the imposter in New Warriors) is just putting him out of his misery at this point.

My favorite two characters are already dead. One was a horrible story (Jean Grey), one was a good story (Thanos). I guess I ultimately feel the same about both though, I eagerly await their return. As for how I felt when it happened...disappointed for both I guess...but I enjoyed the Thanos issue, where as the Jean issue and how it happened were so far beyond stupid I almost laugh at it.

Colossus is my favorite X-Character, when he was killed I was bummed, but you know....didn't want to stab anybody or anything. I'm pretty apathetic towards my fictional characters.

Though I'm still bummed about Banshee, but that's a primal pain, comes from seeing the demise of a fellow Ginger. Its like M-Day out there for us, we're going extinct.

If Emma Frost were to die, I would be an absolute wreck for a week, I was absolutely upset after the one where Emma asks to be killed because I thought Joss might actually do it.

I've pretty much said that would end my comic book buying and it's sort of true now.

I would stop buying Astonishing and Uncanny, but now that I read X-Force and X-Factor it wouldn't be none whatsoever. Still, I've bought a lot of comics just for Emma before so it'd be a lot less money spent if she did die.

my favorite character is sage and i don't have to worry about her dying because she has already transcended death and returned as a god.

wolverine and x-23 are tied for my second favorite and everyone knows they cannot die, so i am just fine.

Although my favorite character can't die... I'd be sad for about two days, but then happy if she did. Because I wouldn't need to do a lot of stuff to celebrate/read and commiserate with other fans anymore. But she always gets brought back, most worse than before.

Does any character really stay dead for long? There are always alternate versions showing up in comics at least.

I'd begin shaking uncontrollably, become irritable and lash out at everyone around me, and exist only in my room, leaving my house occasionally during night hours to wander the streets aimlessly, cursing everything that's wrong with the world.

Okay seriously, if either Nocturne, Nightcrawler, Cecilia Reyes, or any other fave character of mine died I would be pissed. Really pissed, 'cause that would suck. But as far as their existence in comics right now goes, it doesn't really matter. They seem dead anyway (until they're used by a really good [Exiles] writer...)

If Hellion dies in X-Force, I'll spend a few hours taking a nap with my headphones on... lots of radiohead. I'd cancel my X-Force subscription for three weeks... and then remember that I love X-Force and put it back on my pull list before I missed an issue.

But those three weeks will learn em...

I'd be a bit disappointed that they had to die, but as long as it was done in a good storyline and had some lasting effect on the characters left behind I could deal with it. I'd always have back issues.

When they killed off Psylocke the first time I canceled my subscription to Xtreme because I didn't like it anyway. I just hated her dying because she was apparently supposed to be brought back British but they didn't let CC do it so she stayed dead for a while. He should have known first before he did it. But maybe that story isn't true. Every time she gets brought back to Uncanny I start reading it again, but otherwise I'm not a huge fan of any other mutant enough to buy a book for them.

If it was done well, through heroic sacrifice and with the proper eulogies and whatnot, I'd probably be OK with it at first. Rather have him go out with a bang that matters than have him hang around and not matter. Then there would be a delayed reaction as I would start missing him and I would get pissed that they didn't do more with him. I'd post long, angry rants on message boards. Then I'd move on.

If it was done badly, I'd be the rabid one at the next con, throwing tomatoes and spray-painting his name all over the place. I would also post long, angry rants on message boards until I was banned everywhere.

If Gambit died; I doubt I'd notice these days.

I pretty much agree. I hope he'd die for a mildly useful cause.

I would get over Blink, Nocturne, or Domino dying, it would hurt but again I hope it would be for some useful fashion. If it was pointless I would upset. I doubt I'd write Marvel in outrage, but I wouldn't be pleased.

Tabby died and much as she rocked...I moved on in a day or two, still feel some shock though.

Then again I'm not a good person to ask this though, I lost many family members in just a few years and am feeling rather blase to the whole passing away thing. So if real people dying has little effect; fictional ones will barely get a thought.

Thats just me though likely.

Dazzler can't die according to New Excalibur, so let's just not even think about such a tragedy lol.

every time we default back to the "IS EMMA EEEEEEVIL?" story line, which is about once every year lol, i worry for her safety despite the fact that she's the HBIC. build 'em up to tear 'em down & all of that. if they did actually kill her though i think i'd be really pretty shocked. definitely sad, but that's kind of the way comics go & if it's a good story i might be able to cope a little better. plus i doubt she'd be gone forever anyhow.

But she'd better be back in the next 2 years or castruation will be at hand, marvel.
