I know that Howard's art can be very polarizing but I've kind of grown to like it.
I don't recall seeing Howard depict Superman all that much, at least recently but I thought his variant cover looked cool:

I wouldn't mind if he used different colorists though, I've liked his stuff more when Dave Stewart colored it.

I am confused by the partial inking.

What an ugly-ass cover.
Chaykin's stuff never looks like it's finished.

I am confused by the partial inking.
He does that a lot now.
The colorist will color over the shaded/inked parts which sometimes looks decent but I would prefer if that were on top of the colors.

I'm not used to hearing the words "cool" and "Howard Chaykin" in proximity anymore, after some of his disastrously sloppy work of the past few years.
That said, I'll admit his stout n' blocky style fits Superman a lot better than some of his targets (Hawkgirl looking stout and blocky was just a CRIME, for example).
Also, the facial features seem to be on the proper side of the character's face this time, so... good on him.
In other words, even if I never want to see him illustrate the INSIDE of a comic book again, this cover works.

Reminds me of Wayne Boring's wide torso Superman style:

Exactly. And face it. If you are real old school, it kind of looks like George Reeves' torso.
Not that that's how I really think of Superman, but at least it allows me to kind of look at what would otherwise seem like pure sewage from Chaykin and find a relevant context (a trick that doesn't work quite as well anymore when he draws everything else, either male OR female just as stout).
