Good afternoon, clock watchers. Monday is almost over and you’re probably already wearing your coat and loading your bags. But there’s one more thing we want to show off before you hop in your cars or respective modes of transport.
As most of you know, come August, we’ll be publishing a number of books spotlighting the Red Circle characters, specifically The Shield, The Web, The Hangman and Inferno, under the watchful eye of writer J. Michael Straczynski. But before we get into all the specifics, let’s look at some cool art, shall we? Here’s a peek at THE SHIELD, from artist Jesus Saiz. Check back tomorrow for more. Enjoy the commute.

Yay JMS! I'd buy drunken napkin scratchings of his.
Now if only he'd bring Babylon 5 back to comics.

Good lookin' out General.

Who's the Shield? Do you think that this series will be new-reader accessible?
I'm gonna check this out just because JMS is on it; most of his stuff is really good, and I'd hate to miss out on a good comic.
Do you think this is the reason why Thor is so late?

No the reason Thor and the Twelve and this stuff has been late is because JMS is a hollywood writer like Heinberg who can't handle things like deadlines and schedules etc.

Hmm i'm guessing it's going to go along the lines of this.
DC:
So the folks at marvel have killed captain america, a long standing crowd favourite and are intnet on not bringing him back eh? Well in that case we'll fill the hole with a new character of our designing HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!
5 mins later on the phone:
Yes, yes, JMS, we want the whole chitty-chitty bang bang, a 8 million year arc with clues from the first issue only being concluded the issue before the 8th millionth.
ONCE A YEAR?...sigh, ok JMS, have it your way.

Yeah, nothing like a 70-year-old "new" character.

The Shield actually first appeared a bit over a year before Captain America. Obviously, Captain America was immediately much more popular (mainly because people like a guy who would punch Hitler in the face in his second appearance.)

Haha. But isn't that what we love about JMS? Aside from all the delays, he's one of the few writers I know of that can pepper a story with hints and little throw away comments that come back in major ways much much later.
He's one of the guys that actually seems to plan out a story before he starts working on it.
I hope this doesn't interfere with the World War Z movie, though.

I think they should have leaned a little harder on the Captain America when it came to the costume design. Too much red.

He's also the reason that Captain America had to change his shield from the original to the round one.

I was so excited when I first heard about DC taking on Archie Comics' superheroes in a more traditional manner than their unsuccessful Impact Comics line. When I saw the Shield pic on yesterday's DC Blog, I was even more excited. Today's latest Red Circle character pic has brought me back to reality.

The original Inferno's look may not be well known or as iconic as Shield's, but that is worse than any of Marvel's "realistic" costume upgrades that they've been doing for JoeyQ. I'm scared to see what's coming next.:frown:
Is this a one-shot? Mini?

I think there will be one-shots introducing the Red Circle heroes followed by a mini or something.

JG Jones is a great artist, but after looking at Inferno and his Final Crisis sketchbook, I think he sucks at designing new looks for characters. Sorta like DC's version of Olivier Coipel. He's one of the few artist at Marvel that I wish DC had, but his designs for Geoff Johns' run on Avengers and Thor's new costume are awful imho.

These characters will fit nicely into DC. It is sad though that many people will take The Sheild as a Captian America Rip off when he was in comics before Cap.

I'm thinking the same thing. If that's the case, why didn't they just bring back Impact like they recently did with Milestone. Although the way they did that was half assed at best. Introducing around 10 characters that haven't been seen for years with little info on them(no Who's Who, no reprints, no introductory 1-shots, not even recaps/indexes in the book) in a team book that already has a lot of members. As much as I hate Marvel's current direction for their universe, they are so much more organized than DC. It seems that ever since One Year Later, DC gets worse and worse in terms of scheduling, editing, and organization. I still love a lot of their books, writers, and artists, but it seems like they are being run by amateurs. I was a Didio defender for so long, but he really needs to get his shit(and those of his editors) together.

Well, the Shield's design is spot on with the original, and Inferno and The Web are actually pretty decent updates of the original designs. Not sure what you're miffed about.

...Was Inferno from the early 80s Red Circle first ?
I'm not too familiar w/that version of the characters , and I've never heard of him .
The Web had a peculiar " henpecked husband " thing added in the 60s version , which the 80s version played more seriously .
The Impact Black Hood - I am assuming it added the concept of there having been a line of Black Hoods through the years . Even though that's , in comics terms , swiped from the Phantom , I've thought that there could be worthwihle...
I believe the GA Hangman always , or regularly anyway , had the bad guy hung - whether executed or , somehow , " ironically " hanged - on the last page of the story .
I suppose that would be seen as " too legally risky to portray " by the lawyers...today !!!!!!!!!
I was disappointed when the Impact version didn't use Fly Girl ! That was still - just barely , I suppose - " modern " slang then , and since they had the rights to the phrase...

I guess I'm reacting mainly to Inferno, though somewhat the Web as well. Not sure why he needed an update. You're right about Shield and Hangman doesn't look bad either.

In the interview Jones said that was the first thing he thought of too. They came up with the nose being sort of made of ectoplasm or some such and therefore not tangible so no one can just grab hold of it.

hahahah--I'm subscribed to The Source on my RSS feed, and the title was "JMS' Designs for The Shield". I clicked the link because I thought JMS was writing an ongoing based on the show!
