View Full Version : DC & their habit of making their characters look like well known people

Most recent example of this is the fact that Vixen in her recent mini-series was seemingly drawn to look remarkable like Halle Berry, but this isn't the first time DC have done this.

Can anyone think of other times characters have been drawn to look like a well known person?

I have been told this, though not seen it for myself, that Superman's appearance was changed to look more like Christopher Reeve when he was playing the character on the big screen.

I've frequently noticed people drawing Wonder Woman to look like Lynda Carter (not that I mind). It's not terribly often, so when I notice it, I like the homage.

This isn't really an editorial decision more than artists' overly relying on photo reference.

And it's not a DC-specific problem. Marvel had Nick Fury looking so much like Sam Jackson they asked him to play Fury in the movies. And Norman Osbourne drawn like Tommy Lee Jones.

I agree.

And most of these threads comparing DC and Marvel come down to one crucial difference: Didio or Quesada. They are the guys who have the clout to enforce decisions that affect all of their titles. Most of the writers and artists have a certain amount of creative leeway, but since the majority of them end up doing work at both companies at some point or another, they don't make a difference when comparing the two companies.

I was under the impression that they asked Samuel L. Jackson for permission to base Ultimate Nick Fury off of him when they created the character.

An honorable demerit on Marvel's side goes to the pair of Daisy Johnson and Maria Hill, both of whom are based off of Angelina Jolie's look in Hackers. In this case, both characters look sufficiently like the character they're based off of that it's impossible to tell them apart without further context, such as Daisy Johnson's signature weapon.

two or three "DC" artist slightly making characters look like celebs is better then four Marvel artist tracing pictures of celebs..

PS: Marvel got permission from Samuel Jackson to use his likenes for Ultimate Nick Fury

So would you say it's more of an issue with Marvel than DC then?

It had better not be a "habit" because people own their likenesses and have every right to charge. Once or twice for shits and giggles like occasionally making Shang Chi look like Bruce Lee or Clive Reston look like Sean Connery is one thing, but if it's ongoing you risk lawyers getting involved.

I would say so. DC doesn't have any infamous tracers like Greg Land.

I don't know about others on here, but one reason I am not very keen on it is it can actually be distracting to read a title when a main character looks too much like a well known person.

Maxwell Lord was very clearly based visually on Sam Neil. Which I thought at the time was very cool.

Well, on the cover to The Last Days of Animal Man #3, Power Girl is apparently Joan Rivers....

I remember Gary Frank's Cat Grant looking very much like Tracy Scoggins (save for the hair) in "Brainiac."

Not Marvel Obviously but I always understood that the main character in Wanted was meant to look like Eminem.
