Every 3 months or so, there's a comic mart thing at a university hall in the city I live near. They go up and down the country as far as I know, it's a few guys selling stuff really. They have a pretty big variety and I love going, but the past coupel of times, I've jsut picked up more recent things. I'm looking to try and get some 80's or 90's, even stuff from 200 up over if any of you guys htink it's worth getting.

I know it's a damn vague thign to say 'recommend me stuff from the 80s and 90'. I'm looking for some Green Lnatern from before Geoff Johns, since his stuff is hte only exposure I've had to the character outside of team books. I dunno what the going is like on finding 'Whatever Happened to the Man of Tommorow' issues for a decent price. That's probably me being really over optimistic 'cause I can imagine those being hard to find/quite expensive. I hear Hawkworld is good? Yeah, just anything DC that strikes you as being really good (again with the vagueness). I'm open to reading anything, so there's no specific characters I won't read, just anything you guys wanna recommend. Thanks.

80's:

Swamp Thing: The Alan Moore years- After a shocking truth about his origin comes to light, Swamp Thing tries to come to terms with what he really is and what he can really do; collected inSaga Of The Swamp Thing, Love & Death, The Curse, A Murder Of Crows, Earth To Earth, and Reunion

DC Universe: The Stories Of Alan Moore- Contains some classics like the aforementioned Man Of Tommorrow, as well as various odds & ends he did for the company (in between more well-known projects)

Batman: Year One- Batman-- wait for it-- begins (as does Catwoman and a certain honest Gotham cop).

90's:

Starman- A fledgling legacy superhero tries to juggle fighting crime, his hipster lifestyle, and rebuilding bridges with the now-distant father from whom his mantle came. Currently available in some swanky Omnibus editions.

Batman: The Doug Moench Kelley Jones years- Weirdness & moodiness abound in this period-- even by Gotham standards-- and the artwork sure reflects this. Ran from issues #515 to #552. Should be available dirt cheap in back issue bins.

Hitman- A small-time Gotham City hitman recives mild superpowers in one of the DCU's many mega-events. He then goes to work taking out monsters, z-list supervillians, as well as the typical mob stuff he did before... all while trying not to let his grim work slowly drive him over the abyss. A violent, funny, irreverent, morally-pretzeled other-side-of-the-tracks-tale in the DCU that's been out of print for years, but is coming back in new trades starting in June. If you like Secret Six/Villains United, you may like this (although the feel of this one's a lot more blue-collar).

Starman. How could I forget?
I also recommend Suicide Squad and Sandman Mystery Theatre.

I'll add:
Chronos - A short timetravel series tangentially superheroey
Spectre- Just an awesome series that also take a look into the Spectre mythology.

Martian Manhunter- haven't gotten to this yet but I hear good things about it.

I'll also add Young justice which is from the 2000's but a great and somewhat humerous book.

In the 90s and 80s the only ones I have come across are graphic novels available from the library. The Alan Moore Swamp Thing and Neil Gaiman Sandman series are good recommendations.

Just to give you one from 2000+ I would say look for the Orion series by Walt Simonson. Really a good series, and coming form someone who hates the New Gods that is saying a lot.

The Green Arrow Longbow hunters stuff is something I heard about quite a while back but had forgotten about, I've heard great things about it though. I'll definately check it out, what issue does it run from?

The Steve Englehart GL and GLC, what about those? which issues are worth starting from? I've been wanting to read some pre-Johns GL stuff for a while, but had no idea where to start. Is the stuff just before Johns did Rebirth any good? it's Judd Winick writing that stuff, right?

And the Batman stuff, which out of the Doug Moensh or Alan Grant stuff would be better to read first? And what issues do those run from, one psoter said 515 for the Moensh/Jones stuff, is it worth starting from the very beginning?

Thanks for all your replies so far.

Longbow Hunters was its own 3-issue mini-series that led into the 1988 ongoing. It wasn't my cup of tea, but the writing was very strong and the artwork was excellent.

Can't comment on any Green Lantern stuff that precedes 1990-ish, but Emerald Dawns I and II were enjoyable (though now out of of canon), I've heard mixed reviews of the Gerard Jones stuff, and I've heard nothing but good things about the short-lived GL: Mosaic series that starred John Stewart (I think it lasted 17 or 18 issues). Ron Marz's GL stuff starring Kyle Rayner was entertaining enough (starting with "Emerald Twilight" in GL #48 and ending with #125 and then he returned for #176-181 to close out the series), but not "OMG-absolutely amazing." Judd Winick's run was mostly terrible, but for what it's worth, he did bring back the Guardians, as well as revived Jade and John Stewart's super-hero careers. If you get the chance, also check out the Last Will and Testament of Hal Jordan graphic novel, which starred Tom Kalmaku and featured the restoration of Oa (great story).

My favorites from the '80s:

Man of Steel #1-6 and any John Byrne Superman stuff.
Wonder Woman #1-62, by George Perez
Justice League International/America #1-60 and Justice League Europe #1-35, by Keith Giffen and JMD.
Swamp Thing #20-64 by Alan Moore.
Batman: A Death in the Family (death of Jason Todd)
Batman: Year One
New Teen Titans vol. I #1-58 + Annuals, as well as NTT vol. II #1-80-ish, by Marv Wolfman and a good chunk by George Perez.
Crisis on Infinite Earths

From the '90s and above:
The Flash #69-ish to #163-ish, by Mark Waid.
JLA #1-43 by Grant Morrison.
Starman #0-80 + Annuals, one-shots, whatever you can find, by James Robinson.
The Spectre #1-62 by John Ostrander.
The Sandman by Neil Gaiman.
JLA: Year One #1-12 by Mark Waid.
Hourman #1-25 by Tom Peyer.
Young Justice #1-55 + Sins of Youth mini-series, by Peter David.
Supergirl #1-80, by Peter David.
The Ray #1-6 (mini-series, not to be confused with the ongoing, which was good, but not as good) by James Owsley.
Birds of Prey assorted mini-series and one-shots, by Chuck Dixon. Haven't read the early issues of the ongoing, but heard it was all good stuff, too.
Stars & STRIPE #0-14 by Geoff Johns.
Final Night #1-4
DC One Million #1-4
Major Bummer #1-15

Good reads for the 25 cent bin:

Chase
Young Heroes in Love
Suicide Squad

Other Stuff:
JLI/E
Young Justice (first 3 years)
Wolfman/Perez Teen Titans
Invasion! (Not really an epic tale, but is the introduction of the concept of metahuman into the DCU)
Lonely Place of Dying crossover from the Batman books
Death of Superman/Funeral for a Friend storyline from Superman (the death story is meh, but the year long aftermath without Superman was pretty good)

Deathstroke the Terminator was pretty good.
Red Tornado from the 1980s was a good miniseries with one of the earliest Kurt Busiek stories and great Carmine Infantino art.
Green Arrow by Mike W. Barr and Trevor Von Eeden. Green Arrow done right.
Flash 322-350 by Cary Bates and Infantino. Best Flash ever.
Definitely the entire Suicide Squad series by Ostrander and McDonnell, Kesel, Isherwood and Snyder.
The Spectre by Ostrander and Mandrake.
Batman: Ten Nights of the Beast.
Fury of Firestorm from start to finish.
Gross Pointe by Mark Waid and others. Good, fun series.
Grant Morrison's early Doom Patrol work and his entire Animal Man run.
House of Mystery with I...Vampire as the lead feature. This was definitely the best work of Tom Sutton's career.
Amethyst's first maxiseries.
Blue Devil.
