I really want to get into this new series, but I'm afraid that I read little of DC comics.

What should I need to know or read to get into the series when it starts on July 15?

Get Blackest Night #0 on Free Comic Book Day, and you'll be set. I'm sure it will have a checklist, and get you up to speed.

Then you should read:

Blackest Night
Green Lantern
Green Lantern Corps

Then choose any mini's that you want.

Here is a good primer for whats been going on:

Green Lantern: Sinestro Corps War volumes I and II
Green Lantern: Secret Origin
Green Lantern Corps: Ring Quest

Those are the trades that catch you up mostly. After that you either have to wait for the next couple trades of each series or just find back issues:

Final Crisis: Rage of the Red Lanterns one shot
Green Lantern 36-39
Green Lantern Corps 28-35

Those books all give you the build up and intros to the Sinestro Corps, Blue Lanterns, Red Lanterns, Orange Lanterns, and the new Star Sappires.

Thanks for that, I need to get on that.

In addition to everything else everyone listed, I'd say if you can get your hands on Alan Moore's Green Lantern stories included in the DC Universe: The Stories of Alan Moore (http://www.amazon.com/DC-Universe-Stories-Alan-Moore/dp/1401209270/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1240417716&sr=1-1) trade, one of them specifically really sets up everything happening in Blackest Night. And they're all really good reads. If you don't want to buy the trade, check the library. I've seen that trade at almost all my local libraries, and with Watchmen being as popular as it is again, "thanks" to the movie, more and more people are carrying Alan Moore stuff.

This isn't a necessary read, just a good one.
