View Full Version : Rebels#3 (spoilers)
Another enjoyable issue.
Dox transforms Wildstar into an energy like being that must stay inside a containment suit. She's not entirely pissed as she can now fly, like the rest of her race, and her tracking powers have expanded to be interstellar in range. They head off to find Strata, one of Dox's old teammates from LEGION. Since Dox's robots were trying to kill her and her family, she's not too thrilled to see Dox.
Meanwhile the Omega men stage an assault on Maltus, Dox's former HQ. They take out the living computer in charge of everything(Silica), but discover that the robot was being controlled by a starro. Not the usual blue one, this one's black. Then some meta human, with a black starro on her back, busts through the wall for a cliffhanger.
I hadn't expected the Omega men to show back up, figuring last issue was just a cameo. Dox is still his usual manipulative, ruthless self and that's a good thing. It's been so long since I've read LEGION that I remember Strata's the rock one and more on the hero end of the ethics scale, but that's about it. Looking forward to fireworks as Dox puts his team together.
Silica referred to the starro as a she. Not knowing anything much about Starro, besides the mind-controlling face starfish routine, I'm not sure if there being another starro or it being female is any kind of new and startling development in starro ecology.

so Starro is the big villain?
That sounds pretty cool. He is a huge JLA villain and cosmic menace.
I will pick my issue up today.

I'm loving this series more and more with each passing issue. Can't wait for number four to come out!!

Something tells me it's going to be more than just Starro, as menacing as he/she/it is. I don't think the woman on the last page is just another host.
The woman on the last page is either an updated version of Lobo's girlfriend Layla (Lobo Annual #1 (http://www.dcuguide.com/Lobo/LoboA_001.php), Bloodlines crossover), or she's another Czarnian, the facial marking and skin color are similar to Lobo's.

Yeah, I'm not too familiar with the previous Legion/Rebels or Lobo's backstory, but she did cross my mind as a possible Czarnian.
But is it really a starro? It looked a bit different...

Ditto.... REBELS is fantastic.

It's not the Starro the Conqueror, that likes to sit on Superman's face, its a starro. Presumably a member of the same species which has been named starro after its most famous member.

Finally got my issue.
I really really enjoyed it. that was pretty cool.
Loved the continued building of dox's new team. like that character strata, if she is a woman, does she have boobs?!
Yeah, I'm not too familiar with the previous Legion/Rebels or Lobo's backstory...
...Neither is the artist. Broot looks *NOTHING* like Broot.

This book has the potential to be that much better after this first arc concludes. I really like how the team is shaking out, and once it's in place I'll be eager to see what sort of relationships begin to develop.
So far, I'm already becoming fond of Wildstar, and I hope her having to deal with her new state of being is played up further in future storylines. She sort of reacted to it here, but it was far too brief to satisfy me. No longer having a tangible form while being stuck in a containment suit for possibly forever should definitely be something that takes some adjusting to.

This book is my favorite DC title currently, and it would be perfect if Lobo were in the book.
DC! Give Bedard Lobo right now!

I enjoyed the first couple issues although this one took a slight step back for me.
It's just the whole building a team arc can be so slow.
I also never read a Legion comic in my life and think Dox is a real jerk . . . I kind of wish the lead character wasn't a ruthless bastard.

Dox is supposed to a jerk though. He's an ass who does bad things for the right reasons. You want to hate him but you know he's going to turn out to be right so you play along.

By that do you mean b/c he knows what he needs to do, or more simply b/c he's a "good guy"?

Great read three straight issues. Big space opera is seemingly Tony Bedard's bread and butter.

Things will heat up next issue I reckon. The players will move into position and the war in space will ignite.

I hope so. I want very much to like this book (having been a big Negation fan in the past, and wanting to support Tony), but so far, it just isn't doing it for me. I liked #1, but have been less impressed with #2 & 3. I'm not saying it's bad. It just doesn't seem particularly special at the moment.

How is this book doing sales wise? I'm tempted to buy it, but don't want it get started on it and see it canceled in six months...

Dox is the best kind of character though. Ruthless bastards like Sabretooth, Lobo, and Dox are my favorites.

It's guaranteed through 12 issues, but the best way to insure it sticks around is to buy it and then spread the word about how good it is.

That's good to know about the guarantee. I don't disagree that if MANY people bought it, it would stick around. But I've tried that with lots of good comics staring b and c listers, and 99% of them have been canceled. :evilangry:

I know how it is-- I've been burnt many times in the past myself. (Still mourn Hard Time, Testament, and Exterminators.) But no matter what number you'd like to raise sales by, you always have to start out at one.

I have enjoyed this series so far. The art has been great and Bedard seems to have a firm grasp on what makes Dox tick. This is my second favorite title being published by DC right now behind Green Lantern. I would definitely like to see Lobo join the cast as I think Bedard would do a wicked cool job with him.

No committment. And I free up my pockets in a few months. Most of the time I find that just b/c the book will lack in sales doesn't mean it lacks in quality.

I've got to say that I'm enjoying the writing in this series very much. Definitely keeps the same sense of story that LEGION/REBELS had, and Dox is written spot on. That art style leaves much to be desired though. Not very dynamic poses, and the dotty shading thing is a bit annoying. It is very good to see Dox back in action and trying to take his LEGION back. So long as the quality of writing stays this high, I will keep this in my pull box for certain.
