View Full Version : Should the Queen of England knight CC?

darknessatnoon

Sir Chris Claremont does have quite a ring to it, does it not?

For service to the British Empire, do you think Chris Claremont deserves to be knighted? He invented British mythology whole cloth. We would have no Otherworld without CC.

He invented Captain Britain, for example.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b/ba/Lionheart.png

He invented the British mutant, Psylocke:

He invented Merlyn:

Roma:

and the Sword Excalibur.

How on earth were Captain Britain, Psylocke, Merlyn, Roma and Excalibur "existing myths?"

And even if you kind find precedents for these stories, it wouldn't matter. Like William Shakespeare, Claremont channeled the national psyche and forged them into these new archetypes. No British lad grows up these days ignorant of the name "Kelsey Leigh Kirkland."

Please. From a North American POV, Claremont's legacy was to show the world that male brits were consumed 24/7 by anger, fetishist thoughts and a longing to become a lesbian.

Therefore, the *only* consequential factor in this debate is whether or not the queen secretly wishes she were a lesbian.

You'd don't generally get a knighthood just for doing your job, you get knighted for public service (celebrities usually do lots of charity stuff to get a knighthood). Also CC hasn't lived in Britain for most of his life (as far as I am aware), he is listed as American in Wikipedia and his writing has not had the same level of impact in the UK as it has in the US. All in all he's be unlikely to get even an OBE or CBE, since non-Brits generally are not eligible for British honours.

It's hard to deny his influence on popular culture now that the X-men are well-known cultural figures that have been in big time movies and successful TV shows. A lot of what he did helped make the X-men what they are today and he deserves all the accolades possible.
