Uncanny X-Men #508 *spoilers*

Hmm, so from the first preview that I saw of Land's art, I thought "that looks surprisingly tolerable for Greg Land"; and, having read the whole issue, that still holds. He's still a bad artist and lazy thief to boot, but he didn't ruin the issue.

Anyway, the writing quality continues to be much higher than the first arc (and, with Land's art not totally dragging things down).

From the start, the whole "ensemble cast" thing has been something of a losing proposition; even in "Lovelorn", which was really good, the main focus was on the same guys who are in Astonishing X-Men. This is actually the first time that I thought Fraction did a good job of actually using B-tier and below mutants as more than walk-ons (Domino and Northstar, especially). In fact, I'm not sure Cyclops had even one line in this whole issue.

Northstar (and Aurora?) being recruited for the cast was nice, and the last-minute surprise addition of Dr. Rao to Beast's crew also worked really well (though I could have done without Dr. Nemesis' "I don't believe in magic" routine; I know that's an attempt to play on real-world conflicts between science and the otherworldly, but anyone who doesn't believe in magic in the MU is a straight-up moron).

On the ending: I can't imagine them keeping Classic!Psylocke permanently; the other look seems way too famous for it to be allowed to be done away with.

Overall it was very slow-paced. Too much Otakus talk. Too much Northstar/Boyfriend talk. Pretty dull talk.
The storytelling was weird. Wolverine learns that Spiral and Deathstrike have stolen Kwannon's body from his graveyard. He doesn't say anything to the X-Men and goes to California to recruit Northstar. (Yes, because the only way the X-Men could defeat Empath was by having a speedster on the team, right).
Then, the "wave of pain" affects all the psychics before the actual Sisterhood's ritual take place.
Psylocke was probably kidnapped from the massage parlor she's been working for by the Red Queen. I hope they explain how it happened next issue. Sage knows what happens in every timeline, they can't ignore that.
And if Marvel wants to keep Land, fine. But at least hire someone else to draw some backgrounds. That page with Northstar and Wolverine was so dull. There was nothing behind them, but blue and blue and blue.
All that said, it was a slight improvement from that dreadful Lovelorn, but it isn't there yet. The cliffhanger was cool! Psylocke in her original body (or Revanche?) What the heck does Maddie want with the Asian body? Can't wait for next issue.

That's the Sisterhood's intention at least, I think? But things don't always go as planned, I could see the Sisterhood's plans for Revanche going wrong, with Betsy's mind as well as her life force ending up in her original body.

Or they DID plan on transferring Betsy's mind as well, and brainwashing her into thinking she's Revanche. Between Spiral's genetics and magix, Madelyne's telepathic power and the Mastermind's sister potential for illusionary brainwashing, they're more than equipped to do so.

I do hope this leads to more panel time. We've got the "core" X-Men like Emma, Scott and Logan running around Astonishing as well, leave Uncanny to the ones that are actually FUN.

No one really got spotlight other than the Sisterhood, and the sparring between the Wyngarde sisters was great. Chimera and Maddie were also fantastic.

I've been wasting my money on it for a year hoping it would get better. Arc after arc nothing happens, its slow, the art is horrible. I just cant take it. I cant put up with greg land, i was planning on skipping the dark x-men arc anyway so I might as well drop it till it gets better.

Kwannon woke up and didn't know where she was or recognize anyone there.

Maddy reanimated her entire body, so new eyes don't seem out of place (along with the new internal organs, musculature, and skin.
Oh, seriously, people; even if that is Kwannon resurrected for the moment (which isn't clear), it'd be ridiculous to think that would outlast the arc (particularly since Psylocke appears to be on the cover of #512).

In the end... I had to peek back at the Hellfire Cult arc for a moment to see if there were any major recycled images of drawn women. Emma's look of pain, during the "psychic event" obviously looks like an orgasm, so finding the exact image could prove more difficult. I'd put money on it being from Phoenix: Endsong. Land's art gives me deja vu to other issues... which weren't that good art-wise, either. No nice way to put it.

That being said, all the transitions to make the things I'd like to happen, happen? Not smooth. Northstar's rejoining of the team, while something I'm happy about, the logic behind it went completely out the window.

Dr. Rao just appearing as a member of the X-Club, after she was just trying to create a cure for the mutant gene... seems odd. Hell, I've defended the X-club's concept, but in this issue, they were WAY out of place, and effed up the pacing. That was their job, if nothing else. Same goes for the Expatriate Russian Prostitutes, or as I shall call them, the ERP for now on.

As it's been for the past four months, this issue sets a stage... and I'm fearful it'll fall as flat as the last arc, where Archangel pwned Godzilla-Lite. I'm hoping for more. The improvement, if anything, comes from the GASP! focus on characters not from Astonishing. The transitions to use them (Domino delivers flowers for Logan? Logan goes to recruit a guy on the basis of, "I owe ya one for a-stabbin' ya. Christ, if Logan owed a favor to everyone he stabbed, he'd never rest.) could use some work, to say the least.

I’m not the biggest Dazzler fan but it is a disgrace that she got a new costume and was on at least a half dozen covers and yet she hasn’t done spit. Uncanny needs a writer and artist that can handle a large rotating cast. These one panel cameos is not enough.

It was nice to see at least one black Russian prostitute in Emma’s class. But I’m wondering what they think of Emma? I bet some of them are thinking “we was saved from being hoes, so why is one trying to teach us”.

It was go to see that someone else other than Scott and Emma getting some. I hope we get to know the girl’s name Xi’an was sexin’.

She looks pretty ugly in this issue. Back to the long schnozz and the uninteresting placid face. She has to be the unsexiest woman Greg Land has ever traced. Girl really did look back from the dead.

I definitely agree, but I'm just glad the british body is back even if it's only temporary. I sorta miss those random things in issues like makeovers or full issues about breakfast like the one after Onslaught haha.

Well my ideal choice would be that they didn’t succeed and all they did was switch their mind back to the right body. Betsy can be the bad ass telepath and Kwannon can be the telekinetic ninja. With Betsy powers back she can take the load of Emma so she won’t be hogging (pun intended) the telepathic spotlight. And the X-men will get a Telekinetic back on the team.

I'm pissed they gave Hep the Dazzler/Anole treatment. That does NOT placate me, Fraction. Stop panel-propping with characters you don't know how to use.

One thing can be said for this run: it is CONSISTENT.

Moira MacTaggert was unavailable to Fraction, and he needs to use female characters to do menial chores like provide the best coffee available to the X-Club. That work is beneath men.

I’m not the biggest Dazzler fan but it is a disgrace that she got a new costume and was on at least a half dozen covers and yet she hasn’t done spit. Uncanny needs a writer and artist that can handle a large rotating cast. These one panel cameos is not enough.

Agreed. Psylocke is more defined and known by her 90s version than any other. So to change it might hurt the character. It could be interesting though. It was unexpect to bring Kwannon/Revanche in so I'm excited to see where it goes. But it is bringing up more Psylocke confusion which she does not need.

writers who created storylines for Psylocke have been adding on new powers almost every other year so maybe they just wanted to start fresh and back to the original to clean out things. like the clusterf*ck of the Crimson Dawn, power switching with Jean, immune to being physically manipulated, immune to telepathy, and "mountain crushing" telekinesis, flight? (thanks to CC). i could see why the frustration would lead them to say screw it and start all over.

and if they somehow retained the Asian body they could always put Kwannon's personality in it to make the newer readers have their familiar Psylocke.

I kinda like her Crimson Dawn powers. It made her even more different from Jean and Xavier. She was never as powerful a psi as those two and she became their teleporter.

I loved the scene when she melted out of the shadows doing her last great storyline, Psi War. She looked great in her shadowy Mandarin armor ready to slice at the Shadow King.
