Wouldn't Maddie just want Betsy in her original body because that is what she is familiar with from the Outback days? I mean she never met asian Betsy that I can recall. It might be a "precious moments" moment.

In all honesty, does there have to be any other reason beyond the fact that fans have been demanding it for over 15 years?

Despite a relative lack of ideas with what to do with them afterwards but Uncanny has pandered to bringing back fan favourites recently (Dazzler, Karma?)

Well, I can't talk about the others, but I am not praising this shit at all. Those last two issues were almost as bad as most of Claremont's worst stuff; and I say almost because there's no Dino Rachel or something similar.

And what do those issues have in common? Psylocke. Awful has followed this character around repeatedly (see also Crimson Dawn, early New Excalibur and all of New Exiles and foot massages with Neal Sharra) since she went through the Siege Perilous. It's like she's cursed.

I wouldn't say what they've done with Dazz and Karma can be considered pandering to their fans. More along the lines of mocking them.

It's like holding a slab of meat in front of a starving dog, but not letting the poor thing as much as lick it. Somehow though, the dog gets slapped in the head with the meat a few times.

I didn't think it was bad, it wasn't mind blowing but it wasn't bad. It's a little bit above mediocre.

Anyway seeing how this is the first issue of a 4 issue arc, are we going to assume that the Sisterhood is complete? Or do you guys think the Red Queen is going to try and recruit more psychics.

I can see Jason Wyngarde back at the end of this arc, ever since the relevation that he mind raped the Sentry into a beaten red headed stepchild I had this feeling that Bendis wants him back.

Reading the thread again, have to say I forgot about Kid Omega...maybe they'll use Martha and Blindfold.

Well hopefully if Betsy goes to Captain Britain & the M:13 book, maybe we can keep Kwannon in X-Force or as a new villian. I hope Fraction will put her in an updated version of her Australian Outback uniform

BTW I hear rumors that Captain Britain & the M:13 book is getting canceled, is it true ??

Not any time soon. Rumours were spread late last year, but since have been repeatedly denied by every quarter of Marvel.

But I'm not sure that Betsy will be going over there, even still. I think she'll be staying on Uncanny. A guest run in CB&MI13 is likely, though. And long overdue. If this change lasts Brian's going to NEED to know about it.

I am this time. I think Fraction is getting a bad deal. I really did like his story. Everyone can't get the spotlight, but he is taking on a big cast of Xmen. I actually re-read it right after because i enjoyed it.

Part of me is tempted to join in on the mocking.

Part of me is still trying to figure out how the efff was the issue any worse or any better than the Fraction average...?

My take was middling. The art and dialogue, as well as MAJOR plot developments (Psylocke mucked with for the 40th time) are bad.

However, the fact that there at least was no Cyclops is a step away from the Astonishing platform that this book has often been. Seeing Northstar and Karma with their first gay lovers, on panel, respectively, is good. Seeing Domino hold her own against Chimera and Deathstrike, nice. There are some redeemable qualities. But enough?

At best, this is middling. But I'd say low to middling. Maybe 50% of a train wreck, as opposed to the worst book ever, that would be a full trainwreck where a plane flies into the wreckage.

Northstar and Aurora should come back to San Francisco. Not only is Aurora infinitely more interesting that Northstar, but also Karma would no longer have to sneak off with one of the Russian prostitutes when Colossus isn’t looking.

I can’t contain my excitement for Northstar’s snowboarding records though…

Why the heck did Beast imply to Jeffries that he had never been to outer space. Wasn't he JUST THERE in the Breakworld arc?

He meant that he didn't go to space for a solution for the decimation.

Why is everyone calling those Russian girls prostitutes? They're sex slaves, gosh.

The Northstar scenes made me cringe they just felt so FORCED.

You know, I immediately thought that it wasn't 616 Betsy. When was the last time she wore that buttfloss Jim Lee outfit?

Am I the only one with this suspicion? Isn't that Asian Betsy on the cover of 512 (?) with the science team?

No, you're not alone in that suspicion. I was pondering that same thing this morning. Perhaps Betsy was drawn in her well-known ninja outfit because it would make her more recognizale to fans, but it occurred to me that maybe (and this is a BIG MAYBE) Madelyne Pryor, etc. found some random girl to dress up as Psylocke, and used her life-force to resurrect Kwannon (a life for a life). Notice that Psylocke's face wasn't shown but rater obscured by a face mask.

Maybe Maddie only wants Kwannon to think that Psylocke restored her... ? Otherwise, I'm hoping next issue explains how/why Betsy reappeared in this dimension.

So... in other words, the Fraction average?

Since #500... yes, I'd say low to middling would be the average rating for Uncanny. Too many weird quotes, throwaway cameos without relevance by the characters who are "rotating in" only to leave, dialogue that most sitcoms would include a laugh track to, and art that has been inappropriate cheesecake poses and faces to the situation.

I wish it wasn't so, but there it is.

Careful, WBE didn't say a godawful wreck.

There have been times where I thought Uncanny was in worse hands... but as that discussion will invariably lead to the dreaded creator comparisons, I will abstain from doing so.

I will say that this one is in the bottom five, to be sure. Don't ask me where, though. I can't pass judgement in the midst of. I mean, there have been runs that started well and the wheels came off, and runs that started weird, and got brilliant. It could improve, but as the creators say, "wait and see".

I think it's getting slightly better than the first arc with all the S&M and overly repetitive dialogue.

I think he needs to stick with the Dodson's since it makes his work seem less serious and more fun and light hearted while still having some cheesecake here and there.

I thought it was just me. Unlike some though, I didn't find any good from this issue at all. The scenes with northstar were just lame. I need not mention the art. the direction of this book is still reachign for nothing. This "rotating cast," isn't doing it for me. it boils down to pointless lameass cameos. Characters are promised to be in issues. And the are hranted short pornface panels. The dialogue is so horrible i have to read the issues 3 times just to understand what is going on. I'm not payin for crap anymore. I will "wait and see." But i'll do it from the sidelines and spend my 4 bucks on a bucket of galf(i spelled it right) balls.

It doesn't matter in the end, if it's Besty's mind in her original body OR Revanche revived. We ALL know Betsy's going to be alive and well, in asian body, and join the X-Club for some timetravel vacationing. Nothing ever really changes. :/

Not quite a nun; that was another splinter personality. Actually this was the "merged" personality (Yellow costume, short haircut) that told Sasquatch that he was never to touch her as long as he was a woman. It's possible that the abuse she suffered in the convent turned her off women.

Ah cool, well I guess Lands art didn't help the situation. It can be a little bit confusing but I think he's improved a little since SFX. I guess it comes with the territory when you can't trace things like Spirals extra arms or Deathstrikes fingers.

I enjoyed this bit of the IGN review of Lands art in the issues...

"This issue does unfortunately mark the return of Greg Land on art though. I've learned that you can usually tell how long someone has been reading comics by their opinion of his work, since I went through the process myself. When I first started getting back into comics a few years ago, I was floored by Land's work, which had a very clean and modern look compared to what I was accustomed to. That opinion changes after repeated viewings, when you start to realize all the tricks and gimmicks he uses in the course of an issue. The final straw for me was when I saw the exact same face being photo-referenced for different characters in the very same issue. At this point, his art can pull me out of the flow of the story by itself, which is never a good thing. I'm sure my opinion is more extreme than others, so feel free to call me an idiot in the comments."

I completely agree with this. I loved Lands work in X-Men: Phoenix Endsong, which wasn't the first time I'd seen his work but the first time I bought it. And I loved it, I still think its great and his best work. His Ultimate mini series and Ultimate FF run too I thought were good but I didn't read or buy them because I'm not into that universe. But now that he is a regular on X-Men I feel like his quality has gotten worse and his tracing has been more and more apparent.

not to mention Land and Dodson's style are very different. Itll be strange during the DA/UXM cross over to have Silverstri and Dedato with the Dodsons too.

She all but dissapears into the blue and the team makes no mention of her absence, no mouring of her absence, or lifts a finger to go out and at least attempt to rescue her! She got thrown under the bus plain and simple. How's that for your "friends"? Of course wasn't it spiral who switched her into the asian body in the first place? MuhollandDriver
04-18-2009, 10:52 AM
Ack. Hardware issues put me out of the loop.

Well.....overall i -do- think this is an improvement. Is it where it needs to be? Nahhhh.

Reading the interviews with Fraction....the man has some inspired ideas...they often just don't seem to pan out on paper.

The rotating case concept did work better in this issue. With some more tweakings...it could be quite a cool thing.

The beginning part with Domino may be the best writing Fraction has done on this series, hands down. The modern wit that Fraction aims for was present, and Domino actually felt like a character. Then again, Domino is quite a likable character and hard to screw up. Yes, the logistics of her going to a grave for Wolverine are kind of odd, but if good characterization and creativity are being utilized, i can forgive such things much easier.

The Science Team plot fails to inspire. Having a female on it helps. i always found her character interesting. i guess a cheesy Greg Land smile means all is forgiven between her and Beast! Still, this entire plot fails to go anywhere.

The Sisterhood plot, however, is moving forward. For all of You who think putting Betsy in her body is a bad idea due to "90's popularity", just remember that the 90's twisted Psylocke into something almost unrecognizable. Where she ended up, after every convoluted turn, is a representation of what was horrific about that time period. A fresh start could do her good. i loved her in the Claremont days. "Kwannon", shifting bodies, Crimson Dawn, an ever shifting powerset, alternate reality hopping....all that was the beginning of the end for me.
It's similar to what Zeb Wells said about Magma...sometimes...You just need to cut through the convoluted crap to get to the heart of the character. Psylocke may be the most convoluted at all....it took something drastic.

The Northstar introduction...this one was a mixed bag. Yes, it is great to have him and hopefully his sister get featured. What is tricky is that he, like Psylocke, Wonder Woman, and other characters, is characterized however the writer wants to see him, which is never consistent. Fraction sees him as an uber-confident gay man. Okay. He hasn't always been that. I recall a past writer using his HYDRA brainwashing to show him as an angst ridden gay man wanting to kill all the gay bashers in the world. Chuck Austen saw him as a bitter ole queen with pointy ears who, deep down, really cares. And so it goes!

The moment between he and Wolverine, with the backstory of Logan killing him, deserved more than it got.

Now, i'm not saying it required a bit heart-wrenching scene, but it surely deserved more than half-baked flippancy. Which leads to my next complaint..

Sometimes the series just tries too hard to be edgy and witty. When he relaxes and focuses on character, like the Domino segment, the writer achieves what he wants! He was obviously trying too hard on the Northstar scene.

An example is Northstar stating he doesn't want to be a token. Well...with the boyfriend appendage, a well-meaning trap writers fall into with gay characters (just throwing a boy or girlfriend in there with no development. An example is Wiccan and Hulkling..who lack the journey Patriot and Hawkeye get), the writer commits the very act Northstar rails against.

This issue, for me, is much much better than the whole Lovelorn arc, which frustrated me endlessly. i can at least say i am interested in where this arc goes.

Weren't Northstar and Aurora under the control of "the children of the vault"?? How did they get free? what are the chances Fraction actually has them running at the speed of light?

I never thought I'd say this, but Land's artwork was better than I expected. I could tell some of the women's faces apart. However, I never imagined Deathstrike to resemble Bjork.

As for '90's bad, it looks like they're resurrecting the whole "is Nightcrawler a priest or not?" thing. He's not, the whole idea of him being a priest, while interesting in theory, was handled dreadfully from the start. As a Catholic and a longtime fan who expects writers to do a reasonable amount of research and editors to actually edit, I really would prefer the whole priest thing was never mentioned again.

that plotline was followed up in the X-Men annual that came out right after that story. Rogue's X-Men took Northstar and Aurora to SHIELD to use the same equipment they used on Wolverine to deprogram him after he went evil in the Enemy of the State arc. complications arise when Exodus and his crew attack the SHIELD helicarrier, but the twins wake up in time to help stop them.

Did anyone else think the explanation about getting Northstar on the team was a bit...weak?

I mean, are the X-Men really concerned about 'PR'?!

They are. Hence why Cyclops put the team back into uniforms during Astonishing X-Men.
