While browsing the comics section at my local library, I found an interesting comic. The first comic I've ever seen of Jack Kirby's to be published by Image.

Flipping through the book titled "Jack Kirby's wildest concept?" I couldn't help thinking that it was just a rip-off of Stan Lee's mutant concept from Marvel.

Is that just what it is, or was it a truly original idea? Is it any good?

Here's a pic of the first issue's cover:

Its really trippy series that is even moreso for even Kirby (the scene with a little girl playing guitar and singing comes to mind). Basically a soldier in the middle of a battle during the Vietnam war and discovers he has powers and then becomes about the journies he has after discovering them. I'd say that while there are poeple born with powers like x-men It's less liek X-men and more like kirby's cosmic stuff like New Gods and the such but with some obvious influence from arthouse cinema (this was originally envisioned as a film by the way). Overall a very intersting comic that was conceived with a begining middle and end and unlike most Kirby comics all of those parts got finished and the end result was a limited series.

I like the original coloring much better.

The idea is actually a step past X-Men.

In a nutshell the idea is--what if human beings were altered in the womb so that they could survive an expected atomic war? The concept is strong--the execution is pretty wonky. Clearly Kirby was past his prime and there's some really bizarre dialogue in there. It's imminently quotable but it's a mixed bag--some of it is awesome--some of it is really stilted and odd and not everything gets wrapped up in a nice neat bundle.

I love it.

I like the original coloring much better.

But--it's colored like it was originally--with a few slight corrections (Silver Star was originally colored GREEN on the cover of #1 for some strange reason) only the last two issues were altered in order to fit in with the others. Those two issues were originally painted and painted color, at that point, was in its infancy and they looked pretty funky--it was blurry and blotchy and, frankly, ugly. But I suppose if you like that sort of thing...
