Of course, you're right, bert.
Marriage equality = equality in marriage.
Which is exactly what these patriarchal fucks are terrified of.
As a formerly married man, mind, I can't say that I blame them.

Gibson on his wife in 2004:
“Put it this way. My wife is a saint. She’s a much better person than I am. Honestly. She’s, like, Episcopalian, Church of England. She prays, she believes in God, she knows Jesus, she believes in that stuff. And it’s just not fair if she doesn’t make it, she’s better than I am. But that is a pronouncement from the chair. I go with it.”
Yeah wonder what happened...hmm...

Puddy: Elaine, they forgot to deliver your paper today. Why don't you just
grab that one.
Elaine: 'Cause that belongs to Mr. Potato Guy, that's his.
Puddy: C'mon, get it.
Elaine: Well if you want it, you get it.
Puddy: Sorry, thou shalt not steal.
Elaine: Oh, but it's ok for me?
Puddy: What do you care, you know where you're going.
Elaine: Alright, that is it! I can't live like this.
Puddy: Nah.
Elaine: C'mon.
Puddy: Alright, what did I do?
Elaine: David, I'm going to hell! The worst place in the world! With devils
and those caves and the ragged clothing! And the heat! My god, the heat! I
mean, what do you think about all that?
Puddy: Gonna be rough.
Elaine: Uh, you should be trying to save me!
Puddy: Don't boss me! This is why you're going to hell.
Elaine: I am not going to hell and if you think I'm going to hell, you should
care that I'm going to hell even though I am not.
Puddy: You stole my Jesus fish, didn't you?

Damn skippy I would!
I figure Mrs. Gibson hit middle-age, looked around and thought:
"Damn, why am I doing this? My kids are mostly grown, they don't need me, where the hell did *My* life go?
I want out. NOW! Oh, and pony up, you little drunken shit."

That and the fact that Gibson's slowed down and not filming movies and being that famous man. As well as hitting the age as you posted that the kids are all grown and leaving home. And you see some couples really not have anything to keep them going.
My aunt and uncle divorced after 30 years and 4 kids togethor. After the last one finished college ...the 2 grew more apart. He found someone ...and she did as well.
If it was Mel's drinking , I think she would have left him years ago. Or forced him into rehab. Or maybe he got caught with his hand in the nookie jar.

Ok I select NOOKIE for $200 Alex !
Its no shock that Gibson after so many years with his wife is ending. At a certain point I think Gibson is following this man in a way....
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee318/mikeysmom728/ad3-1.jpg
Landon if anyone remembers seemed to crave being the "family man". He would marry and stay togethor with each wife a number of years , have kids ...and as they got to be near adults , ...somehow find someone else. He did this thru 3 wives and numerous kids. Its like Landon needed to have children in his life. (in his autobiography its said he's discuss all his children with people...)
Now this is a long shot perhaps. But many it isn't. Perhaps Mel is hitting that "middle age crazy" era that many men his age hit. That his kids are all leaving the nest , he's in his 50's. Theres not much left for him to conquer in Hollywood. And he needs that challenge or needs something.
Its no excuse really. Ya cheat you should pay out the ass. But yeah ...It will be interesting to see if Gibson settles down quick with a new woman and starts having children like Landon did though.

And she probably deserves every penny.
Many women *still* put their lives and careers "on hold" to be the person who takes care of things "for the man." More often than not, a husband's success is in part due to his wife, because she's working hard on things too, and covering the stuff that enables him to hit that success as the breadwinner. Given the fact of Mel's problems, eccentricities, and attitudes (not to mention affairs), she's put up with a lot (how happy could anyone be, knowing their spouse sincerely believes you're going to hell?). It looks as though they likely "stayed together for the children"---now that the kids are grown, it's over.
She helped him earn it, she deserves her part of it. He can go on making movies, etc. and making a lot of money; she is starting from scratch.
I also hold with the flip side being true: if a husband has sacrificed his career so that his wife can be the major breadwinner in the family, and they split, he deserves his share, too. Homemakers, wife or husband, are still vastly underrated for what they do.
When you make the joint decisions like "okay, you've got the better shot, and we can only afford for one of us to go to school (or whatever)," it's a joint move and a joint decision. The partner who sacrificed to support the other's success and enable the other's success deserves their fair share of it, if they split, male or female.

Whose to say she put her career on hold for Mel Gibson's?
Especially considering the connections he has got to have + money; shouldn't it have been even easier for her to have one if she actually wanted one?
Mel Gibson earned his money himself, she didn't do a damn thing but put up with his bi-polar manic depressive assmonkey.
Does she deserve half of what he owes? Well; he essentially signed a contract and broke it so he's going to be paying here.
And to be fair I've think he's made comments post then that contradict what he said earlier about his wife.

Well aside from giving birth to their children and raising them at home while he trekked around the world (apparently he was on set filming Gallipoli when their first was born - the birth was telegraphed down a phoneline for him to listen to), Gibson's wife has also lived according to the frankly whacked out religious views of his father.
So 'putting her life on hold', is actually not putting too fine a point on it. Plus if pictures of your partner were broadcast around the world woozily hanging onto two blond somethings, shortly before proclaiming Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world, well -

Rightly so, I think. Regardless if she put her career on hold, her life has been. She had to raise the seven kids alone when he was on location. Which had to be pretty often in the 80s and 90s especially. Then have all their loony father's views and having to counteract them when he's missing in order to make sure her kids are public ready. It was a full-time job.

How much could she have lived them? Never switched religion's so it only went so far end of the day.
That and all the money couldn't have made it any easier could it?
Nor the fame.
Don't see any reason why it could be assumed she wasn't just mooching off his fame and money as much as anything else.
Considering how rich they are, I can't help but suspect they have/had maids for cleaning, people for cooking and what not.
How much "taking care of" did she really have to do?
Sure she acted as a baby factory for him and got rewarded handsomely for it and had great living conditions I suspect.
He's a drunk bigoted ass but if he's off working eight months out of the year its probably alot easier to put up with.
Should he pay his wife half of what he owns? He made a contract, cheated on his wife and broke it so yes he should.
Does she really deserve it though? No she doesn't.
But hey if you don't like those rules; get a pre-nup or what have you so you don't have to pay off half of what you own when you decide to get down with some young filly.
And Brianwave thats just how hardcore christians are; they believe God is behind all their actions, whether that be George Bush Jr. or joe blow on the street.
