THANK YOU!! *wets pants*
This looks AMAZING. I was never the biggest Eaglesham fan, the art here looks much more dynamic. This preview is making me tingly.
MAGOG IS STILL ON THE TEAM! I am now excited.
Although I'm gonna miss Citizen Steel.

lol I actually have no opinion on her. She's barely done anything. Though, I do like the little circle of friends that was developing between her, Stargirl, and Cyclone.
And yeah, now that you mention it, I dont see Mr. Terrific. If he's gone......that's lame.

Name the villains, eh?
Right off the bat (sometimes it's tricky without color if you haven't really gotten to know a character) I can see some classics!
Eclipso, Doctor Polaris, Atomic Skull, and to the far right the Madmen, who are old Blue Beetle foes. I see a Nightshade lookalike in there ... the werewolf could be Romulus or Kyle Abbot or one of probably quite a few more DCU werewolves. I see Major Force to the left.
I'm going to assume this is a flashback or "memory" picture, because a lot of these villains are D-E-A-D. Eclipso is with Jean Loring now ... Polaris got killed in the Infinite Crisis (unfortunately - great GL villain), the Madmen were last seen in Superman OYL (Up, Up, and Away!) ... Nightshade is with Shadowpact now after her Suicide Squad term, isn't she? If the wolfman is Romulus, I believe he's been dead for years ... Major Force is deader than a doornail ...
Kick-ass artwork though. I was let down by Ordway in the last three issues. It wasn't the worst art in comic history, but off the heels of Alex Ross and the rest of Eaglesham's stuff it fell pretty flat.
But hopefully the break for the Black Adam arc gave Dale plenty of time to crank out some great pages.

He's too good to take out of the DCU. Maybe he'll have a gigantic role in the Kobra miniseries and end up taking over Kobra's forces, using evil resources to commit good deeds (not unlike Marvel's Agents of Atlas). Dunno, just an idea!
Also, I see Mammoth up there.

Powergirl looks cool as usual, Hope she remains the chairwoman.
As much as I LOVE Powergirl, I'm kind of hoping Alan Scott will be the permanent chairman. It makes the most sense, I always thought of him as the second most respected hero in the DCU (behind Superman, probably). For me, he's definitely the voice and the face of the JSA.
And speaking of Alan Scott, Sturges draws him amazingly.
Powergirl looks cool as usual, Hope she remains the chairwoman.
I doubt she'll be chairman--she's going to have her own series, so she can get her own time in the spotlight. Give it to Wildcat, for Gog's sake!

Eclipso abandoned Jean Loring during Countdown; he's back to using Bruce Gordon as a host, and even though Bruce is able to take control sometimes, it was implied that Eclipso can reassert himself from time to time.
The new Polaris is an Intergang guy who showed up after OYL. Dunno where he got his powers from, but he can do things the old Polaris can't (like mess with the neurons in a person's brain) since he doesn't have a split personality messing with his mind like Emerson did.
Major Force is a mystery to me.

This preview looks really good. JSA has been my favourite team since their 70's All-Star days and I admit to being a little concerned with the news that Johns was leaving hte title. It wasn't that I doubted Willingham and Sturges would give the title their best, it's just that Johns has been so integral to the series that I wasn't sure anybody could replace him. I'm now cautiously optimistic. Merino's artwork looks really nice.
Good to see that most of the cast is remaining. I love these characters and was a little worried a few of them would be tossed to the wayside, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

That's him. Makes me wonder if Mr. Terrific is going to become chairman again.
...Well, this should belay most fears JSA fans had that Willingham & Sturgis would get lazy and trim the team down to 5 or 6 members. The Society is a family, and a large one at that. Any writer who can't juggle at least 25 members in a team book shouldn't take on the assignment no matter how good his storytelling may be.

Call me a rube, but I don't know who drew these. I don't think it's Eaglesham; it doesn't look like his style. Is it Jesus Merino?

Yeah, I didn't think it could be Dale either, seeing as how he's gone to the dark side.
I don't remember Merino being quite that good, but you never know. After all, they've given him the book for a reason.
Edit: Yep, just checked the original link. Apparently it's Merino. Great to see the book will remain in such good artistic hands.

I wonder what happened to him. He must be in the hospital with Hawkgirl now.
Also, we're not mentioning Sand. He's nowhere to be seen. He's been an afterthought for this entire volume of Justice Society.

It's not that Merino's bad... He's just kind of mediocre. I remember being stunned when I found out that he was saddled with pencilling some pages of Final Crisis.
Well, he definitely has improved... though I'm not 100% sure about his rendition of Wildcat. Something about the ears bothers me. Ah well... It's not a big deal.

From what I know about the guy, he seems to still be learning his trade as a penciller, at least for DC. Until recently, I'd only known him as Carlos Pacheco's inker (and a fine one at that). He's done the odd pencilling fill-in here and there including an issue of Action, but he looks to have come a long way in a short time judging by this preview art.

Eclipso is with Jean Loring now ...
Actually the Eclipso feature in COUNTDOWN TO MYSTERY - written by Sturges, no less - sends Eclipso back to being bonded with Bruce Gordon. Jean Loring is presumably dead, drowned or killed in the waters around Themyscira; either way, Eclipso declares her "lost" and returns to Gordon.

I notice Starman & Atom Smasher are the only two JSA members not shown in the four preview pics, even the big group shot. While I can't stand the Starman character and his goofy dialogue, I'd be annoyed if Al was gone AGAIN after this big push to get him back onto the team. It's probably just the artist not wanting to draw a giant guy clogging up the background and I'm just paranoid, but still...

I'm thinking some of the 'missing' crew is just guys who aren't showing up in that arc yet. Willingham & Sturges have kind of stated they aren't shaking things up too much in terms of roster (they're ADDING to it, actually), and let's face it, Jakeem only showed up for every third arc of JSA anyways- kid's just WAY too powerful most of the time.
Their plans include a new Doctor Fate, Obsidian, and something with Mr. Terrific (this is just going from their respective blogs and announced plans), so we can expect that. I'm a little iffy on that big group pic (it looks suspiciously like the standard "Artist drawing all the team members in the book" pose- which could mean some characters leave), but it's entirely likely that's just all that would fit (Atom Smasher does NOT lend himself well to full-body group pictures). But who knows?

I hadn't heard the Fate news. My biggest wishes for the JSA:
1. Stop rotating who's behind the Dr. Fate helmet all the time.
2. Have Dr. Fate join the team
3. Have Dr. Fate DO STUFF while on the team.
4. Boost Dr. Fate to the point where he's a fan favorite.
5. Dr. Fate spins off into his own ongoing, 100K in sales.
6. Kill Jakeem.

I definitely plan on giving Willingham/Sturges the benefit of the doubt. Looks great.
Jesus Merino makes it seem like Carlos Pacheo never left DC. Which is fine by me.

...Alas, Alan's hair has compressed his skull to the point that his brain no longer works, and he's now totally paranoid that any comic book publisher is going to screw him around. If he put the considerations of the fans first, then his fans would support him in unison if he really *did* have what could be considered an actual problem. AFAIC, the guy's got a pompous limey ego that needs to be dealt with. That is, if it's not too late and the corncob up his butt that's holding hiim to the saddle of his high horse hasn't metastasized.
