View Full Version : Went to the comic store for the first time in 15 years!!!

A new comic store opened up near my house, made me break out all my old comics and i remembered how much i loved ready all my x-men and uncanny x-men storys, i read all kinds of comics including dc but the x-men were by far my favorite.
As i was looking through the various back issues of the years that ive missed, i was totally blown away by all the different spin offs and changes made to the marval universe, so many new books id never seen, but what really blew me away, what really turned me off was how the artwork seems to have changed dramatically from what i remember, i even ran across an uncanny x-men that looked like the characters on the new teen titans tv show!!! fucking disgusting!!
What i would like to know is which series have stayed true to the traditional artwork and which books and series are worth picking up and getting back into
sorry for the long first post

What is "traditional artowrk"? Is that code for boring?

X Men Forever, new Chris Claremont comic out soon. The premise is it follows directly on from X Men 3 when CC stopped writing the X Men. It's gonna be great.

If you do not want to buy back issues I would suggest you go to some type of summary page so that you can get a relatively good idea about what is going on in the xuniverse these days. Things have changed a lot and not all for the better. A lot of bad ideas and bad creators have been working on the xbooks for the past 9 yrs which is probably why Avengers outsells them. Marvel has gotten lazy with the books as a line in my opinion. For me I dont dare touch an x book until i can hear some opinions about the story and then I buy the trade paperback. There is a lack of consistency.

hmmm, no not boring, realistic i guess would be the word, i personally found nothing boring about it? am i in the minority? do people actually prefer the more cartoony x-men? i wasnt trying to insult anybody and i see i might have come off rude so i apologize. Is there anyone out there that feels the way i do?

Yes, there was a thread about this in the Marvel Universe forum. The art has simply evolved. When I was a kid, I preferred reading Marvel comics from the '70s and early '80s, because I didn't always like how the art looked in contemporary comics. Too gritty, perhaps even too realistic sometimes. There are still artists who draw the comic books in a more traditional style, you just need to find them and be lucky if the book you want to read happens to have art in the flavour you prefer.
EDIT: I now see that you actually like your art realistic. I haven't seen a lot of cartoony-looking X-Men art in any previews or scans lately, the trend seems to lean toward the realistic.

You just have to see what artists you prefer. There are a lot of different artists out there with varying styles. If you like realism, then maybe greg land... Though thats a certain sort of realism.

Do you remember an artist you liked? Do you remember an issue specifically, that had an artist you liked?

lol im 26, listen im not saying its bad and nobody should like it, i just couldnt believe they did it to the uncanny x-men! just seems a little crazy to me, x-treme xmen i can understand new series new artwork, i actually think they look very cool, but the manga-ish xmen just seems wrong, but i understand alot of people probably love manga (ie full metal alchemist sucess)

X-Men 2099 had Ron Lim art...which happens to be my favorite artist. :)
So I see the type of artists you like, the same as me really. Some people like Chris Bachalo, which truly makes me want to throw up, and I did not like Kia's art on Uncanny, when they looked manga-ish.
Those types of artists are still out there, they just aren't the "in" thing right now, so they are harder to find, and usually on lesser selling books. The mainstream books have the high profile artists that are popular right now.
And you are talking about Wolverine in the Old Man Logan story arc.

Back when you were into comics the art was empasized more than the story. And at that time a lot of the art was similiar. Now the story is taking priority and the artists are more diverse. Some will appeal to you and some will not. But X-Force and X-factor are definitely top shelf right now.

Unfortunately, no, there is not room for both. If you place anything written by Claremont in the last 10 years next to X-Force it will disintegrate due to X-Force's overwhelming awesomeness.

The first two arcs are in trade. Or at least, the second arc will be released in trade soon. If I'm not mistaken, we're only 3 issues into the Leper Queen arc, which is the third one?
X-Force arcs:
- Angels and Demons #1 - 6
- Old Ghosts #7 - 10
- Who the hell is Eli Bard? #11
- Suicide Leper #12 - 13
- Messiah War crossover

Well, if you liked the art 15 years ago, my question would be WHAT art from that period did you like?
The "Hot" artists from that period were guys like Jim Lee, Eric Larson, Todd McFarlane, Rob Liefield and others.
But at that point there was also a lot of stuff out there (that I preferred at the time and still do) by guys like Byrne, Perez, Frank Miller, Walt Simonson, Geof Isherwood, Mark Bagley, and others.
Some of these guys are still in the business, but few are doing a lot with Marvel right now. You might take a look at some companies like IDW for a more traditional style on some of their books.
