View Full Version : Why do the X-men lack girth ?

Twisted Bliss

Dear reader,

Thank you for taking the time to enter this thread today. For taking time from your busy and undoubtedly hectic schedules to read my thoughts.

The subject gentle reader is Girth and the lack of it amongst the X-men.

Quite simply why is it the only fat X-character was between heroics at the time 'Phat-Karma' and the only X-related character who possessed girth was only that way due his mutant power. God bless him.... THE BLOB.

Do the X-men and Marvel propogate the sprial of poor body self image that is afflicting modern society? Do you think that these portray an unrealistic body image that impressionable readers (be they old or young) may feel pressurised into trying to attain.

Psylocke....what can we say. That wasp waist. The impossible never riding up the butt crack thong....even Scott Summers a man nicknamed slim who is regularly drawn wearing little clothing, showing his tiny waist and dinnerplate nipples could be negatively influencing the readers of today.

Personally I found this most noticeable with the art of Jim Lee. Whilst I am not seeking to point the blame at a single artist, I personally consider his drawings were very detailed, sensualised, perhaps even sexualised, and paved the way for unrealistic body expectation. However I realise that this lack of girth was always in existence within the X-men to my mind it came to the fore in the 90's.

What is your opinion?

Do you think Girth is essential to your reading pleasure, or are you happy with the size of the X-men right now?

The X-Men tried to recruit Fred J. Dukes to the X-Men way, way back in like X-Men #3, right? And it was a complete disaster.

They've been kind of hesitant to recruit chunky people since. It's all the Blob's fault.

I don't blame other people, I'm the one who orders the whole large stuffed crust pizza and eats it in one sitting, I'm the one who takes the gallon jug of vanilla low fat ice cream and pours sugar free chocolate syrup all over it until it looks like Rudy from the Cosby Show, that's all me, but it's not easy to switch off once it becomes a habit. I try working out it's hard, so I'm just saying, I'd like an X-Man of girth, someone I can relate too. Maybe this X-Man gets tired a couple minutes into the fight and needs to sit down, I could relate to that. I tried playing Frisbee in the park the other day and it's tough. I haven't! I live in WALES. If a fat person is ever sighted in Wales, they are sent to work in the mines.

It's the best place for fat people - the mines. They work off the pounds there and nobody has to look at them.

1. BE CIVIL
This should be self explanatory, but just in case, on this board, we do not tolerate people acting like jerks for no reason. Treat everyone with civility. This goes for posters as WELL as creators of the titles. If you want to complain about Chris Claremont, go ahead, but do it civilly, or else I will delete. NO flame-baiting, either! Finally, posts that I deem as being extremely crass will also go beyond our standards of civility.

So stop with the insults, kiddo.

Fat people are repulsive, so it's only natural there will be very few of them in comic books, or for the sake of this thread, the X-Men specifically.

Beyond physical appearance the obese also symbolize sloth and gluttony to a lot of people. Homosexuality is also a trait held as undesirable by a significant majority in society, however most people acknowledge homosexuals are unable to change their lifestyle and they are begrudgingly accepted.

This has not happened for the fats, even though many people are genetically inclined to be overweight. It's society.

That said I was reading a Secret Invasion Avengers book the other day and found myself just about drooling over Shanna or whatever her name is. I couldn't help it.

It's just smarter business to display the gorgeous rather than the ugly.

we have laws to protect individuals from this sort of gross persecution.

You'd be better off having laws protecting people from companies spiking their products with hunger-inducing monosodium glutamate and aspatame.

Why do they lack girth? Natural reason would be that they are "fighters", and they should be in fighting shape. Selling reason is... well, the reason why you don't see a lot of fat on tv or movies except when it is the selling point.

I actually do get sort of confused by this. Even when there were hundreds of students at the school, there were barely any fat ones, and if they were, they were horribly deformed. Angel Salvadore was a LITTLE chubby around the gut and thighs. But everyone else was fit, except for that kid who looked like teen Kingpin, Glob Herman, and that pink blob kid named Carlos I think.

But there were no other girls with even big hips, round faces, thighs, stomachs. No guys with little beer bellies... they're all pretty fit. I guess it makes sense since they excercise daily at the Institute but still, kids cut gym at every school!

Kids with beer bellies would have been all kinds of wrong.

While it would have been more realistic to have a few chubby kids, a lot of teens just don't get fat, because the food they eat goes toward the whole growth thing. When they're done growing, that's when they start packing weight. Alas, most of the kids were killed on a bus before any of them could reach their chubby potential.

Also, speaking of round faces, did you read the issues of Morrison's run pencilled by Quitely? Everyone had round faces back then.

It's quite sad that a lot of people on this thread think that making fun of people is "funny." If some of these posts had substituted similar words describing other races, nationalities, or religions instead of words about overweight people, they would be considered at best prejudiced and at worst hatemongers. Why is it okay to make fun of the way someone looks? None of us can choose what we look like when we're born, nor can some afford plastic surgery and expensive weight loss treatments. It's easy enough for some to say that people just have to stop eating so much and exercise. It's not that easy. There I've vented . . . you can get back to making fun of people now.

Well, intolerance is a weird thing, but you do have to admit, you can't run on a treadmill and stop eating fatty foods and like, swap races, genders, or sexualities.

It doesn't make it okay... but that's why people tend to be more openly biased of people of larger size.

I am very happy with the look of the X-men right now. I like the fact that they look like underwear models.

I'm a fitness junkie and I know that it it takes lots and lots of hard work to look that good. There's the dieting and the excercisng. So I admire men and women who care about their physical appearance. Along with the fact that t hey look great. Being that fit and healthy does wonder for your physical well being and really boosts your confidence level.

I volunteer at a comic book convention every year, and I just don't get why the men and women are the best examples of physical fitness. Yet the guys I see at the con all look like Seth Rogen and Chris Farley look alikes.

I think the X-Men do need a person of substantial size on their team. Maybe make that person a speedster or have heightened agility. Kids need role models of the plus size.

Respectfully....do you expect the X-men (or Superheroes in general) to be able to perform all those athletic feats if they are chugging around 20+lbs of extra useless flab?

04-22-2009, 07:36 PM
The X-Men don't live a lifestyle that contributes to obesity. All of them engage in at least moderate regular exercise. Some even are elite martial artists and athletes. While I haven't seen much actual eating on panel, I have seen cases when characters were encouraged to eat well, and junk food, while present, was discouraged. And Emma Frost probably has a cosmetic surgeon on her speed dial.

That being said, I would like to see more comic book characters look like normal people, and fewer underweight women. (You can't have a 5'8 woman with all the curves guys like comic book heroines to have who is only 110 pounds!)

Try "the Breakfast issue" that takes place after "Onslaught". Uncanny #337, I believe. They all sit down to a healthy breakfast, inviting Quicksilver, who had lost Wanda, and Crystal at the time, as well. They prepare quite the healthy family meal.

It ends with Gambit throwing a pancake at Wolverine, and Cyclops shooting it out of the air.
