While the weekend drama was unfolding in the holding of the American captain, pirates were holding a French family on a sailboat... (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=103070155)

And while we're at it, an interview Frank Castellano (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=103051535), commanding officer of the USS Bainbridge (love the irony of the ship's name!), which rescued Capt. Phillips.

This is worth posting---the content of LtMarvel's link:

French commandos last week stormed a boat being held captive off the coast of Somali. France has taken a leading role in international efforts to halt hijackings off the Horn of Africa and has captured more than 60 pirates in the past year.

People are yelling and whooping in that other thread like "Yeah! Let the U.S. show you how it's done!"... and France has already captured SIXTY PIRATES in the past year.

How many have *we* captured?

*raises eyebrow*

I think we should be cheering the French.

Yes, that IS interesting.

Though it should be noted that there's issues about what to do with the captured pirates - who tries them, where they got locked up, whether or not they'll just get let off/escape easily etc.

Shooting/hanging will do.

for what?
So far the pirates haven't killed anyone (well one died of a heart attack and a few have been killed in the crossfire (like when french spec ops Strom the ships)

Not according to either French or international law.

They have also botched a rescue operation that ended up with one hostage end, which makes the difference between success and failure.

Yeah, let's be honest - the French military are not people you want to fuck with.

Unfortunately, this is going to end up with missiles being launched into the mainland hubs.

The Dutch are doing it too.

Dutch commandos have freed 20 fishermen whose vessel was hijacked by Somali pirates and used to launch an attack against a tanker in the Gulf of Aden.

The captives, all Yemeni, were freed when Dutch forces chased pirates back to the fishing dhow.

It was being used by the pirates as a "mother ship" from which to launch armed attacks on commercial shipping.

...

They had been held hostage since Sunday, Nato spokesman Alexandre Santos Fernandes said.

"We have freed the hostages, we have freed the dhow and we have seized the weapons," he told the Reuters news agency.

On the downside:

The spokesman said the pirates were set free because Nato does not have a maritime detainment policy, meaning Dutch national law would apply in this case.

"They can only arrest them if the pirates are from the Netherlands, the victims are from the Netherlands, or if they are in Netherlands waters," he said.
